Today is Valentine's Day and for some reason I had a funny feeling in my stomach that did not fit well with me.
Every single day, I waited for her to call me. Reach to me from any way. Even just leave a message. But I got none. I did not even change my phone number. Still have my old email address. Kept my postal address the same, yet I still did not receive any word from her. Maybe I didn't matter to her the way she did to me.
And yet I still waited for her. Because a tiny, little hope in me told me that I would receive a message from her.
Because after all this time, I still love her.
Her.
Grace.
A girl who entered my life for a short period of time and left her imprint on me forever.
Suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. Breaking the chain of my thoughts. I jerked a little in my chair and straightened. I was in my dad's office which was now mine. Although I had my own band which was doing great, I had taken up my dad's business. He had retired two years ago.
Anyway, I picked up the phone and answered the call.
"Hello?" I said.
No answer.
"Hello. Who's this?" I asked again. I checked the number.
Unknown.
Who was it?
"Anyone there?" I asked again, even though I knew someone was on the other side. I could hear their breathing. Then why would they not answer the call?
"I am asking one last time. Anyone there?" I questioned and when no one answered, I slammed the phone shut.
Pranksters.
How did they even replace out this number? And who even prank calls at ten in the morning?
Jesus.
I was ready to rise up from my seat when all of a sudden, a wistful thought struck me.
In a hurry, I picked up the call and redialed the last number.
"The number you are trying to call is switched off." A robotic sound came from my phone. A cut the call and dialed again.
"The number you are trying to call is switched off." The robotic voice came again. I cut the call again.
My heart was beating faster like I just came back from a good run. A rush of adrenaline ran through my veins.
No, that could not happen. It was not her. It cannot be her. She did not call me in years then why would she choose to call now? It's not her. No.
Standing up, I walked out of my office and went straight towards my secretary, Chloe. She was on a call but when she saw me coming towards her, she ended the call.
"Sir, is there something wrong?" She asked me. Looking at me like I was going to go ballistic on her. Her expressions pulled me out of my haze a little and I swallowed hard to gain some control back on myself. I showed her my phone's screen and pointed at the number that sat on top.
"Find out where this number came from." I told her. She nodded her head once and wrote down the number on a sticky note.
"Of course, Sir. Anything else?" She asked.
"No. Just replace this number and get back to me as soon as you can." I told her. Again, she nodded, giving curious looks to the number.
I should have said something to warn her, but I decided against it. There was no need to panic, I told myself. I left the place, giving the written number, a last glance.
After doing that I decided to go back to work. However, after one hour of me trying to work I realized that I could not focus. No matter how much I forced myself. Hence, I decided not to even bother.
I informed Chloe that I was leaving the work early and to call me only if something really important happened.
I walked out of my office and decided to walk, instead of taking my car.
The streets were filled with people and every possible place was covered with Valentine's Day decorations.
Red hearts, chocolates, roses, balloons, ribbons. It was all decorated. I walked and walked until I came to a halt in front of the flower shop. Without thinking, I stepped inside it.
An old lady was watering plants while her assistant was cutting thorns from roses. The bell rang above my head, alerting them of my entry. The old lady came to me smiling. Showing her one lost, teeth. Her eyes were kind when she spoke.
"Welcome dear. Want flowers for your girlfriend?" She asked. Hearing her words, I felt a twitch deep within my heart. Still, I gave her my best smiles and nodded anyway.
"Very good. What do you want?" She asked me. I looked around and pointed my finger on the roses that her assistant was working at.
"Roses! Good. Let me get it out for you." She said and disappeared somewhere around the corner. I waited for her to come back when I felt my phone ringing. It was Chloe. I picked it up.
"Sir, the phone number you gave me..." She said and my beats increased again, "... it is from a company named Xander Enterprise. Owned by..." She continued but I stopped her.
"It's alright. Thank you for the help. Call me if anything important happens." I told her and cut the call even before she replied. The old lady came to me and handed me a freshly cut rose bouquet. I smiled at her and took out my wallet to pay. "No. It is free for you." She said stopping me from handing her money. I scowled at her. Shaking my head, I replied.
"No. I can't take it without paying." I told her and extended the money in my hand to her, but she firmly shook her head.
"No. Someone had already paid for it." She told me. My brows rose up in surprise. She pushed the flowers in my hands. "Who paid for it?" I asked.
"It doesn't matter." She replied.
"But I want to know." I asked again. She just smiled and walked back to her work without replying to me back.
I walked out of the shop and looked at the flowers in my hand. Something caught my attention. It had a card.
"What's gone won't come back. Remember, somewhere, someone will always love you. :)"
And from the corner of the shop a girl smiled at him.
