Unveiling Samantha by Veronica Wright -
Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Samantha chucked the piece of chalk through the air. Every head in the room tracked its flight as it made that perfect are and smacked the wrist of a sneaky kid about to launch a surprise attack. Dropping the heavy dictionary, he clutched his wrist and shot Samantha a dirty look.
The class was totally wowed by her throw. At that distance, even the teachers could usually only manage to hit a desk at best but Samantha nailed it from across the room.
“Excuse me?” Casey called out. She’d seen all sorts of behavior over the years from these rich kids. And with their powerful parents, she couldn’t afford to step on any toes.
Samantha turned, her eyes losing their fierce edge. “What’s up, Ms. York?”
“If you keep treating them like this, they’ll make you pay. Just let me handle it, okay?” Casey said, sounding worried. She looked at Samantha like she was a delicate vase that couldn’t handle the rough treatment these kids might dish out.
“Ms. York, letting them walk all over us won’t work. You might put up with their nonsense, but I won’t,” Samantha shot back. She stopped talking and just looked at the suddenly quiet students in the back row, thinking hard.
Casey was about to say more but Samantha cut her off. “Ms. York, Mr. Youngston wanted me to tell you to head to the office. He needs to talk about the try-outs happening soon.”
“The try-outs for the Trinity Research Institute?” Casey asked.
Samantha nodded. “Yeah. He said you should get over there ASAP
“Well then. I guess you’re in charge for a bit. With that, Casey hustled out of the classroom.
Now the room was quiet except for a few snickers. Verti, from the back, gave Samantha a nasty smile as she walked up to her. Vera’s eyes sized up Samantha and she sneered, “Look at the trash you’re wearing. It’s worse than what my dog sleeps in. How about begging for forgiveness for throwing that chalk at me by licking my shoes? Maybe then I’d let you bunk with my pooch.”
“Oh, Vera, you’re just too nice. How can this loser deserve to snooze with your dog?” one of Vera’s friends added.
“Yeah, she’s not worthy to touch your shoes,” piped up another.
“But hey, her hair would make a great mop,” said another, reaching for Samantha’s hair. But in a quick move, Samantha grabbed the girl’s wrist and-with a sharp twist-dislocated it.
“Ah!” The girl’s face twisted in pain as she tried to slap Samantha but her hand was caught mid-air. Then Samantha’s foot shot out, kicking her square in the chest. There was a scream followed by a thud that filled the room. The girls were sent flying back six feet, crashing into the classroom door.
The rest of the class let out a collective sigh of relief. Thank goodness none of them had crossed Samantha. Those who got their comeuppance had it coming-they were related to the vice principal and had been throwing their weight around for too long.
The kid who had been watching from the sidelines looked up at the racket, taking in how Samantha handled the situation. “Is that Professor Brooks over there?” they whispered, unable to believe their eyes. They rubbed their eyes and double- checked. Yep, it wasn’t their imagination playing tricks on them. Word was, nobody could keep a classroom in order quite like Harley.
A couple of kids were coughing and struggling to stand by the door. Their leader, Vera, picked up a stick and made a beeline

for Samantha, ready to strike. The stick was like those old rolling pins, capable of causing a lot of pain without leaving any marks. Nobody wanted to think about the kind of damage Vera dould do with that kind of swing
But what happened next dropped their jaws to the floor. Samantha snatched that stick right out of Vera’s hands. Vera looked shocked; she clearly hadn’t expected Samantha to be that strong Vera’s eyes widened in panic, and before she could do at thing, Samantha had swung and hit her legs with the stick.
Samantha had this calm look as she swung, the stick sheing through the air-it was clear she wasn’t holding back one bit. Albert had been talking about how a few bad apples at Meadows High School got busted for bullying recently. They ignored so many warnings and were about to get kicked out of school. But until now, nobody had the guts to stand up to them, let alone tell the cops or their parents. Samantha wouldn’t stand for such nonsense, not while she was around.
She turned to Vera, who was rolling on the ground, crying out in pain, trying to figure out what part of her body to cover. The rest of Vera’s gang hesitated, wondering if they should step in to help her. After all, Vera had connections-that was the vice principal’s niece there. And Samantha was just some nobody from the sticks. One of Vera’s friends made a move to punch Samantha, which only annoyed her. “What are we dealing with here, roaches?” she muttered to herself.
She spun and kicked the attacker, sending him to the floor.
But still, another one came at her-this time with a knife,
Samantha rised an eyebrow, dodged the blade, and grabbed the attacker’s wrist. With her other hand under their arm, she bent and tossed them over her shoulder.
The class watched, practically in slow-mo, as she nailed a perfect shoulder throw.
Samantha glanced at the knife-wielder on the floor and picked up the knife he’d dropped. She checked it out and chucked it right at him.
Everyone was holding their breath. ‘Listen, getting mad is one tang, but murder? That’d get you tried as an adult!” th thinking.
Half of them had their eyes closed, hoping against hope for Samantha. The admiration from the ones in the front, the was through the roof.
That was because there was a chair right next to where the knife thrower landed, barely missing his head. Samantha had aimed them right at the chair leg, and not even a speck of dust had been disturbed.
The dude had even passed out when Samantha tossed the knife his way with that ice-cold look.
Samantha just sneered, thinking about the nerve of these kids. They tried to hit her? She turned to the kids on the floor, who looked scared out of their minds, and smiled, “How’s it feel to be on the other end for once?”
“I won’t do it again, I swear. Just let me go, okay? My aunt’s the vice principal. You can’t touch me! If you do, you’re done at this school!”
“Man, why am I even scared? Bet you didn’t know the principal of Meadows High is my grandpa. Maybe he should sort this out,” Samantha mused. She figured, “The guy’s always been like grandpa to me, so yeah, he’s my grandpa. Not a bad time to play the family card for once.
Vera looked confused and then started shaking like crazy. She eyed Samantha, who was the picture of chill, and wondered if it was for real. Staring up, she blurted out, “You’re full of it! Mr. Youngston’s like, what, 40? No way he’s your grandpa.”
Samantha was caught off guard. Looked like her bluff was called, but she just sneered and crouched down. “True, I’m not Mr. Youngston’s granddaughter, but… that vice-principal you’re so proud of being related to? That’s me.” She whispered it so. quiet that not even the closest kid could pick it up. Then she walized right out, leaving Vera on the floor, totally spaced out.
