What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 304 I'm Going to Be a Mommy
Lewis dragged Josephine all the way to the car. He drove her to the hospital once again.
Subconsciously, she had developed a growing aversion to that place since he had gotten mad at her in the hospital this morning. Even before Lewis could take her inside, she found herself trying to avoid entering the building altogether.
The moment Josephine got out of the car, she gripped the door handle tightly to show that she didn't want to follow Lewis into the hospital no matter what.
Lewis spent some time trying to get her into the hospital, but he kept failing. When he turned around to look at her, he finally realized she was glaring at him the whole time. Her eyes stubbornly conveyed her reluctance to enter the hospital.
The man paused for a moment, having sensed something at that time. His stoic face suddenly relaxed into one of gentleness as he moved toward Josephine and patted her on the head.
"It was my fault just now. I shouldn't have lashed out at you. I'm sorry about that."
His voice was so gentle that Josephine couldn't help but look dazed.
Lewis continued, "Let's go get a check-up. Once you're done, I'll take you out and buy lots of good food for you. What do you think?"
The young woman's reluctance started fading away upon noticing his gentle expression.
Hence, he continued, "Come on. Listen to me. Let go right now."
The last command was extremely effective on Josephine. She released the door handle immediately before moving to stand next to him.
Lewis dragged her to the Obstetrics and Gynecology department and registered her for a walk-in appointment.
Josephine didn't know what they were doing there. She followed him wherever he went, anyway.
After that, the man coaxed her into following the doctor into the diagnosis room to go through a check-up. He even promised her more delicious food in order to get her to comply. Left with no choice, Josephine could only do as she was told.
She looked very confused throughout the check-up. The moment she got her blood drawn, she found herself hating the hospital even more.
However, Lewis kept a close eye on her. He would guard the doorway wherever she and her doctor went. Once she came out, he wouldn't hesitate to drag her back if she were to wander more than three feet away from him.
Soon, the results of her medical examination were released.
This time, Lewis grabbed Josephine's hand tightly to prevent her from disappearing again. Currently, they were sitting at the desk inside the doctor's office so that they could listen to the doctor's analysis. Josephine snuck a peek in Lewis' direction, noting the serious expression on his face. His eyes were fixated on the doctor's face as though he was worried that he might miss out on some details. After the female doctor went through the results, she placed them down before glancing at Josephine. Her brows crinkled slightly when she noticed Josephine looking very confused.
Those with more than two brain cells would notice how weird that young woman was acting right now. She didn't seem like a regular young adult.
"She's not pregnant." The doctor turned to shoot Lewis a meaningful look. "Her uterus walls are very thin. Did she go through an abortion in the past?"
The man pursed his lips wordlessly. In a way, he was acquiescing to the doctor's assumptions.
She continued, "Additionally, she is currently experiencing inflammation in her uterus. Please be attentive to her symptoms. You should minimize sexual intercourse for now. Sir, you seem quite mature, so you should be aware of the risks associated with inflammation in the reproductive system. If her condition it could pose a significant threat to her overall health. Given her thin uterine walls, it will be difficul for her to conceive again. Even if she does, she faces a heightened risk of recurrent miscarriages."
Once Lewis was done listening to the doctor's explanation, he fell silent for a very long time.
Sometime later, he finally spoke up. "Are you saying that she won't be able to get pregnant anymore?"
"I didn't say that. She has a small chance of conceiving, but it's very easy for her to go through a miscarriage once she does." Lewis no longer uttered a word.
As for Josephine, she couldn't really understand the conversation.
Were they talking about her?
Lewis asked another question. "Then what's with the gagging and dry heaving?"
"She's suffering from gastroenteritis."
The doctor then glanced at Lewis. "Since you want a baby that much, why did you tell her to abort it in the first place?"
"That's none of your business." The man refused to tell her anything. "What should she do now?"
Naturally, the doctor got slightly agitated upon hearing Lewis' unfriendly response. Observing Josephine's innocent and naïve appearance, she could already surmise what had transpired. That man must have been the reason why. He knew the young woman was very naïve, so he tricked her into getting the abortion.
Undoubtedly, his motives were driven by his own pleasure.
All in all, that guy was a colossal jerk.
The doctor really hated Lewis and his attitude, but she couldn't just leave Josephine alone. Hence, she prescribed some anti-inflammatory medication for her.
After that, she told Lewis to keep Josephine's diet light and bland.
It was true that Josephine didn't eat much lately. All she had was a bunch of contaminated food bought from the food truck that day, which worsened her stomach flu.
Once Lewis picked up the medicine, he left the hospital with Josephine in tow.
Despite having promised to treat her to good food, the man ended up ordering tomato basil soup for her.
Josephine had suffered for a long time, so she looked forward to having good food in her belly. The moment she saw the minestrone, her expression darkened immediately. She put down her spoon before turning to glare at Lewis accusingly.
The latter picked up a spoon and started stirring the tomato basil soup so that it could cool down faster. Then, he scooped a spoonful of soup and positioned it near her lips. "Open your mouth." The young woman kept her lips firmly pursed while shaking her head firmly. She didn't want to eat the soup at all.
Lewis tried to convince her. "You can only eat bland and light food for now. I'll treat you to the good food once you've recovered, alright?"
Josephine continued to shake her head. She even pushed the man's hand away before gesturing, "I want to eat tacos!"
He didn't hesitate to shut her down. "No way! You're only allowed bland soups for now!"
The young woman glared at him angrily, her eyes rapidly reddening at the same time. She gestured, "You're such a liar!"
Lewis had tricked her into going through a long check-up with a series of procedures. In the end, he rewarded her with only soup. It was natural for Josephine to protest on the spot.
The man didn't refute her gestures at all. It was true that he was a liar, after all.
He put down the spoon before sandwiching the young woman's face between his palms so that he could gaze into her eyes. Then, he started coaxing her gently, "I told you, didn't I? Once you've recovered from your illness, I'll treat you to tacos. If you eat them right now, you'll suffer from a stomachache. Do you really want your stomach to hurt?"
Josephine hesitated for a moment after hearing the last question.
Her stomach was experiencing a slight ache, which gradually intensified into a throbbing sensation. She didn't know how to describe that pain. Lewis picked up the spoon once more, coaxing patiently, "Come on, now. Open up. Be a good girl."
The young woman remained silent for a moment before opening her mouth obediently and swallowing the soup.
Then again, if Josephine weren't infected with stomach flu, she would be the most obedient, gullible, and clingy woman at this mental age.
Josephine allowed Lewis to spoon-feed her quietly, but she soon realized that the man was spacing out.
Even though he was staring at her, his eyes had gone out of focus. There were times when Lewis accidentally directed the spoon at her nose instead of spooning the soup into her mouth.
Hence, Josephine snatched the bowl from Lewis' spot right away. She grabbed her own spoon and started eating the soup on her own.
She was already famished by then. Besides, the soup was quite tasty. In the end, she enjoyed her meal happily.
Once Lewis snapped out of his trance, his gaze immediately flitted to her face.
He noticed the way Josephine bowed her head and focused on eating her soup. She looked very serious at that moment.
All Lewis could see was a look of innocence and naivety on her face. It gave her the appearance of an untainted angel, devoid of the complexities and worldly tarnish that often accompanied adulthood. Josephine lapped up every last drop of soup in the bowl, making her stomach look quite bloated and round. She then raised her head to look at Lewis.
He was so weird today, seeing as he wasn't paying attention to her at all.
The young woman raised her hand and started waving in front of Lewis.
The latter grabbed her wrist immediately. "Are you done?"
She nodded happily before patting her stomach in satisfaction. Then, she puffed her stomach cheekily while tugging her shirt backward to show the man her round belly.
Josephine flashed a smile at him as she gestured, "I'm going to be a mommy soon!"
It was apparent that she was joking, yet Lewis' eyes flickered with a mysterious gleam. He didn't laugh mirthfully as well.
The young woman blinked a few times before sitting down obediently.
A while later, Lewis tapped a finger on Josephine's stomach, deciding to go with the flow. "Is that so? How far along are you?"
