What Separates Me and You
Chapter 373 Insouciantly Innocent

Lewis merely hummed in agreement.

Josephine sat silently at one side of the ward, blending into the background. She wasn't angry upon seeing Sierra. Instead, she felt relieved. Sierra could certainly take good care of Lewis and prevent similar incidents like the one just now from repeating itself. Besides, she could finally slack off a little.

Sierra had no idea that was what she was thinking about. Given Josephine's silence, Sierra thought something had probably happened between Lewis and Josephine, which led to Lewis allowing Sierra to stay Even so, Sierra was happy she could stay and looked after Lewis wholeheartedly.

At noon, Conrad brought them lunch.

Josephine ran up to him excitedly and took the food from him. She laid the dishes on the table and looked back at Lewis and Sierra as though she was enquiring if they wanted to have some.

Lewis' eyelids twitched when he saw her excitement. Grumpily, he said, "Have some yourself!"

Naturally, Sierra wouldn't join Josephine for lunch. She only wanted to be by Lewis' side.

Noticing that they weren't eating, Josephine sat and dug in. She was starving as she hadn't had breakfast.

Sierra peered at her, her brows furrowed. As clueless as she was about everything that had happened, she noticed that something was off with Josephine. It wasn't only Josephine's reactions; everything else about her, including her behavior, was off.

It looked like there wasn't an issue between Lewis and Josephine. If anything, something must've happened to Josephine.

"What's wrong with her?" asked Sierra softly.

Lewis stared at Josephine, who was enjoying her meal, and his lips curled into an indiscernible smile. "You can't figure it out?" "I can't quite put my finger on it."

"Alright. It's time for you to go. Don't hang around." Lewis started chasing Sierra away.

"Can she take good care of you in this state?" Sierra was worried and didn't want to leave after finally being able to meet Lewis.

Previously, she promised not to show up in front of Lewis and Josephine, so she never approached Lewis after she returned. Lewis never called on her either.

Sierra couldn't help but doubt if he would forget about her entirely if she never visited him, and they would eventually lose contact.

"I don't need someone to care for me."

Sierra was rendered speechless. Though unwilling, she could only get up as she gazed at Lewis passionately.

Nevertheless, his eyes weren't on her. They were fixated on Josephine instead.

Her observation made her clench her fists. After picking up her purse, she left the ward. Looking into Josephine's encounters seemed a better choice than staying back. After she left, Josephine devoured all the food on the table. It was too bland for her taste, but she ate it all anyway because she was hungry.

Appetite sated, she remembered Lewis, who was still lying on the bed. Casting her cutlery aside, she ran toward him.

She wanted to ask him whether he wanted to have something to eat, but she didn't know how to sign the words.

Lewis watched her quietly. He probably understood her intentions and said, "Fetch me a cup of water."

Josephine nodded and did so using a disposable cup. Learning from her mistake, she dared not add cold water to the cup and gave him half a cup of boiling water. Lewis took the cup and instructed her to pass him the medicine on the table.

He took his pills and a sip of the hot water, after which his face instantly changed as he coughed and spluttered. He ended up spitting out the pills.

Josephine's eyes widened. She took a few steps back, afraid his spit would reach her.

Lewis held the cup tightly, crumpling it to the extent it was deformed.

Leaning forward, he took some time to recover himself before he looked up at Josephine. "I have a hunch you did that on purpose."

Josephine saw his savage eyes and waved her hands before her in a continuous motion, feeling helpless.

She gave him warm water last night, but he refused it in disgust. Now, he showed contempt even though she fetched him boiling water. What on earth did he want from her?

Lewis' eyes bore into her for several seconds. Eventually, he placed the cup on the table. He would rather close his eyes and sleep.

Josephine stood where she was, flustered. Lewis had his back toward her, and guilt overwhelmed her as she stared at his back.

She felt that whatever she did was wrong and she should just stop trying. Josephine even thought of going after Sierra and asking her to come back. She couldn't look after a sick man, but Sierra could definitely take good care of Lewis.

Josephine sat on the chair, feeling defeated. She was staring at her toes.

The ward was as silent as a graveyard, so much so that she could hear the wind blowing outside.

Day slowly turned to night, and Josephine drifted to sleep while leaning against the bed.

Conrad had a busy day at the office and dropped by again at night to send dinner.

He saw both of them sleeping when he entered, and his expression changed subtly.

The first thing that came to his mind was whether Josephine could have committed another mistake and caused Lewis to fall unconscious again.

Therefore, he put down the food container he was holding and strode to Lewis' side. He softly called Lewis several times.

The next moment, Lewis' eyes flew open, the glint within startling Conrad. He immediately stood upright and said, "Sir, it's time for dinner."

The cutlery from lunch remained scattered on the table. Conrad briskly went over and tidied the table before serving dinner.

Josephine got a whiff of the delicious scent and opened her eyes. Rubbing her eyes, she stood and walked toward Conrad, fluidly taking a seat at the table.

Conrad looked at her oddly. What was this? Was she ready for dinner? Lewis was still lying on the bed, yet her appetite seemed undisturbed. "Sir, come and have some dinner." Lewis sat upright in bed and glanced at Josephine's eager face. "Let her eat."

Conrad felt suspicious. "You didn't have lunch, did you?"

"I don't have an appetite."

"Well, you still have to eat."

Josephine nodded in all seriousness while staring intently at Lewis, imploring him to join her for dinner.

Lewis looked at them thoughtfully.

He fell silent for a moment before getting out from under the covers-probably because of Josephine's ardentness-and sat before her.

Josephine watched him sit and flashed a grin at him as she handed him the bowl before her. Conrad took it and served Lewis some minestrone before giving it to Lewis. Lewis took the spoon and scooped a mouthful of minestrone into his mouth. Seeing that he had started eating, Josephine did so too.

She devoured all the dishes on the table, except the pot of minestrone, at top speed, just like a whirlwind. Lewis had not even finished his bowl of minestrone.

Conrad observed her, his lips twitching uncontrollably. Josephine had experienced a drastic change in her behavior since her memory loss and was insouciantly innocent.

She wasn't even like this when she first came to the Alvarez family. Thus, she was living proof that it was easy to mold one's behavior when one was ignorant and new to the world. Josephine burped in satisfaction and enquiringly stared at Lewis, wanting to know why he was eating so slowly.

Holding his bowl, Lewis took a few mouthfuls of the minestrone before putting it down. "I'm full."

Hence, Josephine picked her bowl up and served herself some.
