Trey smiled at her in the dark as his eyes traced over her face. “That is because I can actually see fairly well in the dark.” His smile broadened as he watched her horrified expression.

“Like how well can you see in the dark?” Kailee said quietly as she bit her bottom l*p.

Trey chuckled. “Well enough to see you biting your l*p now as I answer you. Well, enough to know exactly how you look without your clothes on in the dark. Well, enough to see your adorable blushes spread on your face like it is now.”

Kailee lifted her hands to her cheeks and covered it in embarrassment. All those times she was glad it was dark so he couldn’t see her blushing face and he had seen it anyways. She felt two warm hands wrap around her wrist. Her hand was lifted over and pulled into the body beside her.

“Kailee… don’t be embarrassed around me. You are my treasure.” Trey leaned his mouth near her ear as he gently spoke to her. He brushed his lips against her temple and then buried his nose into her neck.

Kailee could feel his breath upon her delicate skin. It steamed her skin in the crook of her neck. She felt his hot wet tongue slowly lick over her neck for a moment before his heat vanished. His head lifted away from her and she stared into the darkness in confusion.

“I don’t want to take things too far.” Trey said as he tried to compose himself.

Kailee smiled and tilted her head towards the voice in the darkness. “I don’t think we can take it further than we already have.” She felt his warm hand cup her cheek and his thumb gently brushed over her.

“This is some special time for us to just talk and get to know each other. I want you to start feeling more comfortable around me. I want you… I want you to want me too.” Trey said quietly.

His honesty was shocking to her. She had this mixture of emotions inside of her. Part of her wanted to be cautious. Maybe he was just saying the things she wanted to hear? Then the other part of her wanted to throw caution to the wind. She wanted to get to know this man and trust him fully. She wanted to move forward and focus on being with him. He was her husband so would it be so bad to fall for him?

Trey could see her face clearly. He could see the hesitation in her eyes and the small frown on her lips. He could feel a pain deep inside of him. He needed her to want him and trust him. It was not a want for him, it was a need. He needed her to feel a connection to him. To be bonded to him. He was a very secure and confident man except in this situation. When it came to Kailee, he was incredibly vulnerable. All he wanted was for her to look at him and want him. He wanted her to choose him.

“Trey…”

He snapped out of his thoughts as he looked at her searching eyes in the dark. He smiled with a small sigh. He pulled her into his lap and wrapped his arms around her. “I don’t mean to push you. It is okay. Take your time. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be here for you, always.” He pressed his lips into the top of her head. He felt her body adjust into his comfortably as her tiny arm wrapped around his own arm.

“I’m afraid Trey. I’m afraid I’m going to end up alone again and empty.” Her voice was but a breath. She tilted her head into his chest. His sweet cedar and honey scent was like a calming drug. She could feel herself relaxing into him. “I’m afraid of getting hurt.”

“I would never hurt you Kailee.” Trey cooed to her gently.

“You don’t know that. My parents would not have intentionally hurt me either, but they did when they died. And I don’t want that hollow feeling to come back.”

Trey ran his hand through her hair and pressed his lips against the top strands. “Are you afraid I am going to die and leave you? Is this why you are afraid of the risk? You can’t be afraid of things like that Kailee. You will miss out on something great. The deeper you love the deeper the pain of loss… but those memories never leave you. It’s okay Kailee… it’s okay for you to trust me. When you are ready, I am here. And until then I am going to love you.”

Kailee swallowed hard. What did he just say? She bit her bottom l*p as she leaned against his chest. “Love me? How can you love me already?”

His breath beat against her head for a moment. Then she felt him shift away slightly. His fingers tilted her chin up to the darkness, but she could feel his warm breath upon her lips.

“Because Kailee. I know you. And you are the one who is meant to be mine.”

His soft lips pressed against hers and they began to move slowly. His lips moved so tenderly and passionately over her own lips. Little sparks of electricity formed in her stomach and shot up her back. She moved into his k**s wanting to deepen it but he pulled away from her.

“Kailee… this is going to be really hard for me but I am going to try my best.” Trey felt regret about what he was going to say but at the same time he felt it was necessary. He didn’t want her getting confused. He wanted her to know how real this was for him. “Kailee… until you want me too… then…” He let out a deep breath. “I won’t touch you at night until you are ready to give your heart to me. I don’t want to force myself on you. I don’t want you just doing this part as your duties. I… I care about you Kailee. I do love you. So, I will wait.”

Kailee lifted her head up towards his voice. She was not sure what to say here. Because she was also conflicted. They were already married. This wasn’t going to change. So then what? What if she never gives her heart to him? Then what? Even if the words weren’t coming out of her mouth her body knew it wanted him. It knew his scent and relaxed in his touch. It wanted his lips against hers again.

“What if I never give my heart to you? Then what?” Kailee asked quietly.

Trey growled lowly. “You better not have already given your heart to another man…”

Kailee giggled. “What other men am I around? Unless you are counting your own men who you have placed around me.” She could feel his muscles tighten underneath her. She could tell that he was worrying about her wanting another man. She lifted up on her knees and felt her way up to his neck. She wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned forward. “There is no one else Trey. I promise, if I am going to give my heart to someone… it will be you. But what if I don’t? Then what is your next move?”

Trey smiled and placed his hands on her waist. He looked into her eyes that were searching for his own. “You will, because I will be everything you want me to be. You were made to be mine but I was also made to be yours.”

“So you are not going to go and seek comfort in another’s arms?” Kailee asked with a small smirk on her face with her eyebrows raised.

“Never. There isn’t another out there for me but you.”

“Good. Because you know what is good for you is also good for me.” She said coquettishly. His fingers tightened around her waist and his head lowered to her ear.

“I promise you… any man you ever touch like that would be dead before the next sunrise.” Trey said in a low deep growl. “I’m giving you a choice to choose me, not a choice to choose anyone else. That is not an option at all.

Kailee smiled. “So… what about if I decide to make a move on you then? Are you going to turn me down?”

Trey chuckled. “If you are searching for my self-control threshold then that is it. I can’t make any promises if you initiate anything.”

“It’s not fair because I can’t see your face…” Kailee started to say but then was interrupted by Trey.

“You need to see what I look like first?” Trey asked with amusement.

Kailee giggled. “You didn’t let me finish.” She turned her head away from him and faced the other direction. “I mean you can see my face when we are talking. But I can’t see yours. I can’t see your expressions to know what you are thinking.”

“You don’t need to. I’ll tell you what I am thinking.” Trey was staring at the back of her head. He could see her pull her knees up to her chest as she leaned her head onto it. She was feeling vulnerable, and he wanted her back in his arms. He clenched his hands together and kept them at his sides. “Kailee. I’ll listen to whatever you have to say.”

Kailee exhaled slowly. “I have a lot I want to say actually and some things I am not sure of what to say. There are lots of questions that are always running through my head. Like you knew me before we got married, didn’t you? And I’m…” How did she explain to him how she was feeling? Or should she? “I want to trust you, but I am not sure if I am quite ready to yet. But… I like being with you. I like having you close. I…I…ummm… I like how we have spent our nights together. And I like that you have taken today to spend more time with me for my sake.”

“I guess I am confused because I haven’t done anything to earn your heart and yet you are giving it to me. I keep searching for the reason why…” Kailee’s head was swimming with so many different thoughts and feelings that she wasn’t sure what all she was spilling out. It was each random thought that happened to spill out of her mouth.

“Kailee. You are over thinking everything way too much. Can’t you just trust how you feel and go with that? I might have known you before but does that matter? You are getting to know me now. You don’t have to do anything to earn my heart. It is just yours and that is that. It is the way it is. And… I love how we spend our nights together too. I am trying to do right by you.” Trey watched as she lifted her head up to listen to him talk. He watched as she opened her mouth and then shut it again. She was struggling with herself still.
