Who Is My Husband -
Scene 27
The water rolled with little ripples created by the breeze. She curled her fingers around a cold smooth surface. She inhaled through her nose as she tried to concentrate. She drew her hand backwards and to her side. Then with determination and speed she flung her wrist forward, releasing the hard object in her hand. She watched the pond dejectedly as her stone hit the water and sank. She could hear the chuckle from Lance as he came up to her side.
“Your angle was way off. You are tilting too far down. That was a perfect rock for that too. Here let me show you for the fiftieth time.” Lance smirked as he grabbed another rock. He walked up close to the waters edge as he began fumbling around for a good stone to use.
Kailee stared at him in agitation. He was being so pompous over the whole thing. An evil idea sprouted in her mind. And she just couldn’t pass it up. So while Lance was busy searching for a skipping rock Kailee grabbed the large rock at her side. With a sinister grin she hoisted it up and threw it in the water right in front of Lance. The water shot up and splattered the surrounding area. Lance froze and slowly turned to look at a hysterically laughing Kailee. Water was dripping from his whole front and off his nose.
“Oh? You think that is funny?” Lance said as he quirked his eyebrow up with a crooked smile.
Kailee bit her bottom l*p and glanced around. She could see the look of retaliation in his eyes. She let out a small squeal and took off running. She sprinted to the slope as she rounded the pond. Lance was on her heels and laughing loudly.
“Like you can outrun me.” He gloated as he reached out for her. He grabbed her shoulder as she hit the hillside.
This is where everything went terribly wrong. For both of them. The moment he grabbed her, her foot slipped on the hillside. The momentum of them running and the force of her flying backwards knocked them both off of their feet.
SPLASH
Kailee kicked up to the surface and looked over to see Lance swimming over to her. His eyes looked nervous.
“Are you okay?”
Kailee could not help herself. She busted out laughing and made her way to land. They both climbed up on the dry ground and laughed. They were both completely drenched.
“Geez Lance. A bit over the top don’t you think? I mean I only got you a little wet.” Kailee giggled as she tried to ring out her clothes and hair.
“That was just a test to see if you could swim. Congratulations, you passed.” Lance said with a small chuckle.
“What happened here?”
Lance and Kailee turned their heads to see Reggie and Grum making their way over to them.
“Lance pushed me into the pond.” Kailee looked at Lance and stuck her tongue out.
“Hey now. You are going to get me in trouble.” Lance said as he lifted to his feet.
Grum reached Kailee first and he reached down and helped her to her feet. He was looking her over to make sure she was okay. “How is Trey?” Kailee asked as she met with his green eyes.
“He is fine and dry.” Grum said as he shot Lance a look.
“It was an accident. I didn’t mean for us to fall into the pond.” Lance said, holding his hands out.
Reggie looked at Kailee. He then frowned and reached for her arm. “What happened here?”
Kailee bit her bottom l*p and pulled her arm back. “It’s nothing.” She said quickly and guarded her arm with her other hand.
“Kailee, I asked you what happened?” Reggie said in a lower deep voice. His eyes looked up to Lance.
“It’s complicated.” Lance said, looking at Kailee. His eyes then turned serious as he stared at Grum and Reggie. “Where is Trey? Is…”
“Trey will meet us back home. He is just fine. But some weird things happened there.” Grum said quietly. He glanced at Kailee showing he didn’t want to discuss it in front of her.
“Was there some strange light there?” Kailee asked in a whisper.
Reggie and Grum stared at her curiously.
“Did you ever replace Balor, the demon? Or is he still around?” Kailee asked, looking up at the two men. She could see they were studying her. They were trying to figure out what all she knew. “A fairy told me you guys killed the warlock, but the demon escaped.”
“And how did a fairy get close enough to you?” Reggie said, looking at Lance with irritation.
“We were kind of going through something on our end.” Lance said as he rubbed the back of his neck. He pointed to Kailee’s marks. “That should have hit Trey. She took the hit instead of him.”
“That’s not possible.” Reggie said in awe, shaking his head in disbelief.
“I don’t know anything about magic and stuff. But is it really weird?” Kailee asked, feeling a bit self-conscious.
Grum smiled. “No, it isn’t weird. It is just something that is very rare. There is a difference. How did you know something was going on with Trey? And how did you know where to place your magic to protect him?”
Kailee shook her head. “I don’t know. I just knew.” She said quietly. She felt her chest squeeze. She felt like Trey still needed her even now. They were saying he was fine but her insides were screaming at her to replace him.
“Have you ever heard a voice or anything regarding Trey?” Reggie asked straight to the point.
Kailee looked at him strangely. At one point there were faint whispers, but she didn’t know if it was directed to Trey. And what would this voice be saying?
“A voice?” She asked, tilting her head to the side?
Reggie sighed and threw his hands out. “I’m out of ideas. She’s got me stumped and that never happens.”
“Both of her parents had magic so maybe she is some sort of rare hybrid which is why you can’t figure her out.” Lance said with a small shrug. “Her mother was supposedly pretty strong. That is what the fairy said. We found out a couple interesting things that we can talk about on the trip home.”
“Where was Trey at to be attacked by a warlock…” Kailee said in a low whisper. She looked up at Grum and Reggie who wouldn’t make eye contact with her. “They are probably connected with my uncle in some way.”
Reggie snapped his head to look at Kailee. “What makes you say that?”
A loud squawk was heard overhead. Kailee looked up to see Sparks descending to a nearby tree. She immediately walked up to him.
“You haven’t been around much lately. You better not be putting yourself in danger too.” Kailee said with a small smile. “Leeta told me about my parents sacrificing themselves for me. She said I have a choice that I need to make…” Her voice sounded weak as she looked up at Sparks.
Your mother should have killed your uncle when she had the chance. Instead, he trapped them. Sparks said in agitation. I wanted to take you away, but I had to wait for you to come of age. The truth is we are going to need you Kailee. We are going to need your strength. I know you are a fighter. You will be able to do what is needed.
Kailee frowned. She felt like Sparks was giving her his last words just in case. “Who is my uncle working with? What are you about to do Sparks? Please… just wait for me to figure things out. If anything, bad happens… you’ll revive right?” He was a phoenix; he should revive from his ashes.
Sparks hopped lower and fluttered down to the ground where Kailee knelt down. Kailee, I’ve been with your mother since she was born and then with you. It is my job to do what I can to keep you safe and secure your happiness. There is something that I have to do. It is important but dangerous. It is my duty. Just like you also have a duty.
“But you are going to be okay right? No matter what you will be just fine. You’ll revive again.” Kailee said and pulled the fiery bird into her chest. She could feel the tears building up. Sparks has always been part of her life. He was her only friend for years. “I can’t lose you.” Her voice broke as her bottom l*p quivered.
Kailee. No matter what you are going to be just fine.
“Please don’t treat me like a child now. You are not answering my question.” Kailee sat Sparks down in front of her. “Are you telling me goodbye?” Her voice was in a small trembling breath.
Sparks tilted his head to the side. I’m telling you that you will be just fine even if I am not around. If something happens to me, you will be given a new keeper.
“I don’t want a new keeper. I want you to always be with me. Maybe I can help you? Tell me what you are doing so I can help.” Kailee pleaded.
Sparks shook his head. No, I have to do this alone. You are not ready to be involved in something like this yet. And the best chance for success is for me to try to do this alone. I have a chance to not be detected. I’m not planning on dying Kailee. There isn’t a moment to lose. I have to go. I’m going to do my best. Just so you know… I’m working on it. And trust your instincts. Sparks hopped back quickly, and he lifted out his wings. Remember to smile. With those last words he quickly flapped off into the sky. He did not want to prolong the goodbye any longer. There was an emergency situation he had to attend to.
Kailee sat there with her hands trembling. What was the point of being someone powerful if she still ended up losing those who were important to her? She closed her eyes and bit her bottom l*p. She could hear the men behind her as they moved closer. She did not care right now though. She was afraid she was about to lose the best friend that she had ever had. For the longest time he was the only friend she had.
“Kailee?” Lance said softly. They were only hearing her end of the conversation, but they could tell it was not good. They could see how upset she was, but they didn’t expect the reaction she would have to them now.
“Leave me alone.” She said in a soft whispering tone. She slowly stood up and wiped her eyes. She looked out in front of her where Sparks had disappeared. What did he have to do that he had to risk his life for? The wind played with the tall grass and tossed her drying hair behind her. The wind was bringing change with it and she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to handle it. She had always bent and went along with the wind. But she was afraid that at one point the change in the wind may cause her to break.
