Who Is My Husband -
Scene 33
Kailee could see that Lance was looking nervous and he swayed his weight from each foot. She looked up at Trey. “You aren’t really upset, are you? I was just teasing.” She felt a bit anxious. It was only supposed to be a joke.
Trey chuckled quietly and then Lance also began to laugh. She glanced between the two of them.
“Are you worried I would be harsh on Lance?” Trey cooed to her in a playful tone.
She clicked her tongue and refused to look at the both of them. They had played with her emotions.
“I see that you two are on the same team. I need to go replace my own teammate.” Kailee said with a small pout. She tried to move a bit farther from Trey, but his arms held her as a comfortable prisoner. And in her current condition she couldn’t manage to get out of it.
“I may enjoy teasing you because your reactions are adorable. But make no mistake. You are my number one teammate.” He then looked up at Lance. “Seriously though, in the future let’s make sure my wife isn’t falling into ponds on your account.”
Lance nodded his head. Everything else might have been a joke but this last bit was serious.
“I still need to work with her some more. I’m afraid her skipping skills are non-existent.” Lance said with a crooked smile. “You need to work on them. So when… so when we go to visit where Reggie is you’ll be ready to skip rocks in the lake there. It really is beautiful.”
“Will we be going there?” Kailee asked curiously. She watched Lance’s face as a relaxed smile rested over his face. His green eyes were smiling too. The place he was thinking about must be dear to him.
“Hopefully soon. That is where my wife is.” Lance grinned.
“Why didn’t you bring her here with you?” Kailee always thought it was weird that he left her behind.
“Several reasons. One, this is a red zone and I want her safe. But the biggest reason is she has a job to do. She works for the royal family of Monog. And she can’t leave from her duties. It is tough but it is necessary. This is the life both of us have chosen and we would never trade it.”
Kailee couldn’t imagine it. She hated being away from Trey during the day, she couldn’t imagine living months away from him. And then only seeing him for a few days and then having to leave again. But Lance seemed content with what it was. Lance was devoted to Trey, and his wife must also be equally devoted to her job. Still, she couldn’t imagine it.
The door opened again and Grum walked in. His eyes landed onto Trey with a sense of urgency. The two men stared at each other quietly. It was like some sort of communication was happening between them because she even felt the changes in Trey’s body.
Trey let out an angry breath. “Grum, stay here with Kailee. Don’t leave this room. Understand?” Grum nodded his head as Trey slowly shifted. He kept his arms around Kailee and eased her back into some pillows that Lance was propping up for her.
“What is going on?” Kailee asked, glancing between the men in the room.
“Nothing for you to worry about.” Trey said in a soft tone.
“It isn’t any more danger, is it?” Kailee asked, feeling anxious.
“No, just something annoying that I need to deal with.” Trey was grumbling lowly. Though he was angry he was still being very delicate with Kailee. “Stay here and relax. I want that soup gone by the time I get back.” He said with fake sternness.
Kailee’s lips curled down as she looked at him. She placed her hand over his and stared back into his green eyes. She could sense that he was a bit on edge and flustered. She wanted to stay by his side. She felt protective over him, especially over everything that just happened. But even more so that he was her mate. His hand reached up and his fingers traced over her cheek.
“I won’t be long.” Trey lifted himself up and looked at Lance. “Let’s go before Reggie loses his temper.”
Kailee looked over at Grum who was unusually tense. Whatever was going on it had everyone on edge. And she hated that she was still in the dark.
“Grum, can you guys communicate through your minds?” Kailee asked thoughtfully. It was the only thing that made sense.
He lifted his eyes to hers and then smiled. “It is something that a lot of different races can do. Ours is no different.”
“I see. Best way to keep secrets too.” Kailee said in a salty tone. She could see Grum flinch, and a small frown dropped on his face. “It is not your fault. I just wish I was someone that he didn’t keep secrets from.”
“I don’t think he wants you worrying is all.” Grum said, trying to defend the secret.
“I understand. Of course, that goes both ways then.” Kailee said in irritation. She was going to open up to Trey and talk to him about Bane. The creature that she keeps seeing in her head. And how it seems like his interest in her is more than just because she is magical. She wanted to tell him everything in more detail and see what he thought. Like how Bane had said he wouldn’t be beaten this time. However, it seemed like he had enough on his plate to keep him busy. She didn’t need to worry him with her trivial stuff that might not mean anything. And if he wouldn’t share his burdens then she wouldn’t share hers.
Grum walked over and pushed the end table closer to the bed. He adjusted the tray and brought a chair next to the bed as well. He sat down and turned to look at her. “Are you going to feed yourself or do I need to force feed you?”
Kailee quirked her eyebrow up at him. “Try force feeding me and see what happens.”
Grum chuckled. “Little kitten. You can hiss at me all you want but you can’t scare me off. Now which is it?”
Kailee rolled her eyes. “I’ll take the sandwich but ONLY because I am hungry.” She said poisonously. Grum chuckled as he grabbed the plate. His large hands covered the whole bottom of the dish as he handed it to her. She took the plate off of him and turned her head away from him. She slowly ate the sandwich and refused to look at him. She couldn’t stand seeing any satisfaction on his face.
It was quiet for a few moments while she finished her sandwich. Then Grum interrupted the silence. “We need to figure out what you are exactly.”
She looked over to see his face looked a bit anxious. As if he was hearing something he didn’t like.
“So, it does matter?” Kailee asked quietly. She saw Grum lift his eyes to hers and he didn’t need to say it. She could see it in his eyes. Somehow her identity was a problem.
“Trey doesn’t care what or who you are.” Grum said plainly. But it was what he didn’t say. He only said that Trey didn’t care so that meant there were others who did.
Kailee looked at the crumbs on her empty silver plate. The remnants of what remained on the plate were only a few crumbs. It was the only evidence of the sandwich that had existed. But it was obvious a sandwich had been there. She was the remnants of her parent’s love. It was obvious they had lived and loved because of her existence. But she had no clue what she was without them. But Sparks knew who she was and so did the creatures in the forest realm.
“I think if I go with Alistair, I can replace out about myself.” Kailee said in a quiet whisper.
“That isn’t an option.” Grum said pointedly.
“Well, you need to make up your mind if it is important or not and how important it is. I feel like it is inevitable. They are going to take me at some point. And I don’t think you’ll be able to stop them when they decide to.” Kailee said and Grum let out a dangerous laugh. It actually sent a small chill down her spine.
“I’d like to see them try. With all of us here it would take an army to get through us.” Grum said smugly.
“Hmmm. And yet Trey was plucked away so easily.” Kailee looked back and smirked at Grum.
“That’ll never happen again.” Grum’s voice was laced in anger as he replied.
“It seems to me like you disregard others because of your own strength. You are so confident in your own abilities that you forget about the others and their strengths too. Maybe they can’t win in a typical fist fight, but I am sure they have other talents and skills that make them challenging.” Kailee said thinking about their whole demeanor. It was always nothing can beat them. Except there was a real intimidation when it came to Bane. And perhaps here is where she was foolish. Because even though Bane looked evil, she didn’t fear him. Instead, she acknowledged him as a powerful creature, but she didn’t fear his existence. If anything, she felt ready for it.
“We are confident. We are strong and powerful. We know it. And this allows us to make confident decisions. It allows us to lead others. And because of our power others should know their place.” Grum said matter-of-factly.
Kailee looked at him with exasperation. “Wow. This is the attitude of Monog and probably the same attitude their monarchy has, right?”
Grum looked at her and shrugged. “Yes, it is. They are confident, powerful leaders who have used their strength to unite this kingdom.”
“Only they didn’t.” Kailee waved her hand off to him and he glared back at her. “The creatures of the forest are not united. They are isolated. They have blocked themselves off from the rest of the kingdom. That isn’t united.”
“They chose that.” Grum said flatly with his brows furrowed.
“And I wonder why?! With that type of superiority complex no wonder they did what they did. Especially since it was their person who died protecting everyone. Then they are the ones who end up isolated after everything. You should think about this. It was one of those weak creatures that freed Trey and risked his life. It wasn’t any of you.” Kailee felt angry for the indignant way the other magical creatures were treated. After all, she was most likely one of them which is why they kept coming for her.
“I’m not saying I don’t respect them. It is just the way it is.” Grum said with a small frown. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with what he was saying. He wasn’t saying it to be mean.
Kailee turned and looked at Grum. “I want your honesty. If I end up being an orc, a goblin, a demon or something of the likes…” Her brown eyes pierced against his. “Will it end up being a problem?”
Grum looked away from her without saying anything but that was her answer. “I see. So, it doesn’t matter who I am as a person, it still matters what species I am underneath it all.”
“Not to Trey it doesn’t.” Grum said simply in a quiet voice. He could see that Kailee was waiting for him to continue. “All you need to know is that Trey is completely devoted to you.”
“I’m getting the impression that there is someone opposed to me being with Trey.” She looked to see Grum’s eyes avoiding hers once again. “Is it Reggie’s family?” They were cousins and that would make sense. Especially since Reggie had tested her out in the beginning as well. Once again Grum refused to look at her. He had answered her question without answering it. She looked at her hands and bit her inner bottom l*p as she took in small breaths. “But he is already married to me.” She looked at Grum with a frown. He still wouldn’t look at her. Surely there was nothing that could be done now since they were already married.
Another thought crept into Kailee’s mind. Her wedding had been done in almost secret. It was just her, Trey and the officiant. Surely, they wouldn’t but a sickening feeling hit her stomach. “They want to pretend ignorance and claim there was never a wedding because of how it was held… is that it?” Grum’s eyes twitched but he still didn’t look at her. Instead, he looked sad as he stared at the wall in front of him.
“Wow.” She breathed out. She felt her insecurities rising to the surface and threatening to choke her. Her emotions were swirling and if not for the bracelet on her magic would be raging. She thought she could relax knowing that she had found her family, but could Trey stand up to them? If they insisted, would he have to go along with what they wanted?
She could not help who she is, and it hurt. It hurt that no matter what kind of person she is she is not good enough in their eyes. Because she isn’t whatever creature he is, so her integrity was under fire.
