Reggie smirked and nodded his head. “This is the trouble part I was talking about… ready?” He grinned widely looking at her.

“How much did you miss me Lizzy?” Lance leaned his head into hers.

“Some days it was harder than others, but I know we are both bound by our duties.” She gazed into his green eyes.

“It won’t always be like this. We will be done soon and then we will never have to be apart.” Lance rubbed his thumb over her cheek slowly.

Lizzy smiled at him until something caught her attention. She looked over and pointed. “Is that Reggie running?”

Lance turned his head to see Reggie and Kailee running into the wood lines. A group of men were following behind them. He swore under his breath and shook his head.

“Go and get him out of trouble.” Lizzy giggled. “Then meet me back at our place… I’ll be waiting for you.” She said, batting her eyelashes at him.

“I’ll be with you soon.” Lance said hastily as he took off running. What sort of trouble were they into now? He would have left Reggie to his own devices but with Kailee there he had to come to their aid.

He darted over the hill taking a shortcut. He then ran into the woods to cut off the pursuing party. As he came up over the hill, he almost ran into four men who were breathing heavily from their chase.

“Oh, it’s just Lance…” One of the men said disinterestedly. He looked around. “Have you seen where they went?”

“We were tasked to follow them and keep them safe. But Reggie gave us the slip…” Another man said in irritation.

“Who ordered you to follow them? That doesn’t seem like something Tr… the prince would do.” Lance said, correcting how casually he spoke Trey’s name. It was true they were close, but it was still customary for someone like him not to speak so familiarly of him.

“The king has ordered us to keep the princess safe.”

“Hmm… I don’t think he cleared that with Trey.” Lance said as his lips pulled downward.

The one man scoffed. “Since when does the king need to clear anything with his son?”

Lance smiled and shrugged. “Of course, being who I am to the prince I must inform him of this. If you don’t mind…” Trey… your father has men tailing Reggie and Kailee. In case you were not aware.

Lance heard a low deadly snarl come through his mind link. They are not to follow them. I’ll have dad call his mutts off.

Understood. Lance smiled. “I believe you will be getting a change of orders soon.”

“Well, we haven’t received those orders yet.” The group of men started to move forward but Lance chuckled and blocked their path.

“Sorry. The prince’s mate falls under my jurisdiction fellas no hard feelings.” Lance flashed the men his white smile as he blocked their path.

“Are you picking a fight with us?” One of the men growled.

“Careful, you touch him you’ll have the prince breathing down your throat. You know how he fancies this vagabond.”

“You dare call him a vagabond?” Reggie growled as he stormed out from the bushes. The men immediately lowered their heads in respect to Reggie.

“It’s okay Reg. It doesn’t bother me.” Lance reached out and grabbed onto Reggie ‘s arm, yanking him back. “You can’t go murdering the king’s men.”

Reggie curled his l*p up angrily. “Watch me. You think anything will happen to me if I do?” He turned his dark fiery gaze onto the men. “Do you think my uncle would do anything more than to reprimand me for injuring or… killing his men? I would think about that carefully before you let your tongues flap so loosely.” Then Reggie’s eyes widened as the men began to fall onto the ground in pain. They clutched their chests, and their faces were contorted.

“My insides are burning…” One of the men choked out.

“Reggie…” Lance gave him a disapproving look, but Reggie shook his head showing it wasn’t his ability. Reggie’s ability was unique in that he could manipulate magic. He could subdue it or intensify it. Which was why he could help calm Kailee down in the beginning. He also was able to redirect magic but that was more of a secret skill of his and took a lot of energy to use.

The soldiers struggled to their feet and glanced backwards. “The king has asked for us to return. So, we will take our leave.” He whispered out the words in a pained breath. The farther they walked away they began to return more upright and then they sprinted away.

Kailee walked up behind Reggie and Lance with her arms folded. “They are lucky I didn’t really incinerate them.” She blew air out of her mouth moving her hair off to the side.

Kailee walked up behind Reggie and Lance with her arms folded. “They are lucky I didn’t really incinerate them.” She blew air out of her mouth moving her hair off to the side.

Reggie chuckled. “I guess our little lamb didn’t like hearing someone insult Lance.”

Lance smiled and looked at Kailee. “You didn’t have to do that. It doesn’t bother me. That’s how they always speak to me.”

“Well, that won’t happen with me here. I won’t tolerate it. And I’ll teach everyone who speaks to my family like that a lesson if I have to.” Kailee glared angrily where the men disappeared to.

Lance chuckled and ran his hand through his hair. “Thank you.”

“What are you doing here anyways?” Reggie asked. “Why aren’t you with Liz?”

“Because I saw a couple crazy kids running off into the woods being closely chased by the kings’ guards.” Lance shrugged with a grin. “Then I figured it would be easier having Trey call them off. You know he wouldn’t want anyone else to follow Kailee around… with everything going on… but if you two are good now I’m going to go.”

“This is a rare time for you, Lance. Go and spend as much time with her as you can.” Reggie said with a small smile. “Oh, and this is from Will, make sure she gets it.” He said, pulling a letter out from his pocket.

“Thanks, I will.” Lance said and nodded to him. “Stay out of trouble little lady.” He wiggled his finger at Kailee and winked at her before walking off.

“Why is Will writing Lance’s mate a letter?” Kailee asked, tilting her head up to Reggie.

“Because Liz is Will’s sister.” Reggie turned and draped his arm around Kailee’s shoulders. “Now off to the lake little kitten. And we are going to have to watch that temper of yours.”

“Ha! You are one to talk. You were going to belt them with your fist. Good thing Lance stopped you.”

“Yeah, but I wasn’t going to set their insides on fire…” Reggie winked at her and she smiled sweetly.

“Wasn’t me.” She said innocently.

Reggie chuckled. “Come on, we have a couple hours before dinner. I should at least be able to elevate you to intermediate level stone skipper.”

“We will see if you can teach me better than my last master.”

Trey shot daggers at his father as he stared at him. They had moved into a soundproof interrogation room. His father and mother each sat on a chair on one side while Trey sat directly across from them.

“In the future when something pertains to my mate, I am to know about it first. You can understand why having strangers watching her is not a good idea. No matter how much you trust them.” Trey all but growled at his father.

“Well, this would have been helpful information to already have. Then I wouldn’t have given such an order.” Richard shrugged his shoulders unsympathetically. This wasn’t his fault.

“Alright you two. Enough. Trey, what is your plan?” Edith asked, closing the subject.

“Reggie and Lance are going to assist me in gathering information. I’ll be leaving Grum and Bethany with Kailee. Needless to say, I will not be requiring any guards or soldiers during this time. Not for me… not for anyone in my group.” Trey watched his father nod his head in understanding.

“What about this new girl Bethany? Are you sure she can be trusted? I mean think about the odds of some strong random dragon just coming into your life.” Richard said but watched a smile spread across his son’s lips.

“For reasons I can’t divulge to you I know she is trustworthy, and we can leave it at that. Her loyalties are more aligned with Kailee than myself. If she had to choose between me and Kailee, she would choose Kailee.”

“Oh my… that is unbecoming that a dragon would not choose their king.” Richard said with a frown.

“I’m fine with it this way. As long as she is completely loyal to Kailee that is all that matters to me.” Trey looked up at his mother. “You’ve seen her fight, right?”

Kailee walked up behind Reggie and Lance with her arms folded. “They are lucky I didn’t really incinerate them.” She blew air out of her mouth moving her hair off to the side.

“She is a good protector to have for your mate. I was honestly surprised by her. Not just her strength but her demeanor. She has solid nerves not once did she falter. I was afraid I’d have to unleash an army on her to get Grum to react.” Edith said in a serious tone that had both Trey and his dad dropping their jaws. They could tell she was serious.

“My dear, your methods are a bit over the top.” Richard said, giving his wife a small smile.

“My methods work. That is all that matters. I get results.” Edith held up her hand and waved it around. “That is the main thing.”

“You know my dear sometimes you really scare me.” Richard chuckled lightly as Trey cracked a grin.

Edith looked down and interlaced her fingers. She let out a small sigh. “Like I was saying that my methods get results…” She glanced up and looked at Trey. “And I may have some information for you.”

Trey straightened up and looked at his mother.

“Edith what did you do?” Richard asked.

“Remember Sorsha? My shadow dragon.” She looked over at Richard who nodded his head.

“Who is Sorsha?” Trey asked.

“Who she is doesn’t really matter. But she has been my secret soldier for several years. She stays in hiding so that she is unseen. Well, I sent her on a mission right after we had visited you. I’ve asked her to investigate the Order. She found out that they gather together every full moon.” Edith looked to see Trey scowling at her.

“Mom, what are you thinking? If you draw any attention this way, you’ll become a target.”

“That’s why Sorsha is doing it. She has no connection to me. No one knows of her but your father.”

“And how do you know she can be trusted?”

Edith smiled. “Well, you trust Bethany for reasons you are not disclosing. The same goes with Sorsha. I trust her. But she hasn’t returned to me yet. Not since I asked her to replace out where they meet.”

“How is she getting this information?” Trey asked.

“She has her methods.” Edith said with a smile.

“What exactly is a shadow dragon?” Trey furrowed his brows since he had never heard of that before.

“A dragon of shadows. She can meld into the shadows and become one with them. Her dragon can also change its form from solid into a black mist. She is a very rare dragon…” Edith said, looking over at her son.

“And she is missing…” Trey leaned back on his chair and looked up at the ceiling.

“I’m sure she is just still on the job. The information she is trying to gather isn’t the easiest to get after all.”

“Why are you even looking into the order anyways?” Trey asked, shaking his head in his hands.

“I had a dream… it was of the creature Bane being awakened. He destroyed our lands and turned the whole world into ruin. I felt like it had prophetic qualities.” Edith frowned and shrugged. “Might have been nothing but…it felt so real. Though it couldn’t have been real.”

“What makes you so certain?” Trey asked. His mother isn’t exactly a prophet but one of her abilities is a type of foresight.

“Well along with the large shadow creature Bane towards the end a unicorn was facing off against him. Which leads me to believe this was a vision of the past since unicorns are no longer around.” Edith said in a matter-of-fact tone as she sighed.

Trey’s eyes flickered as he stared at the ground deep in thought. Was this a past vision of Kailee’s grandmother? Or was this a future vision with Kailee?

“Alright. It is getting close to dinner time.” Richard stood to his feet helping Edith up alongside of him. “We will all do what we can secretly to do our parts. No one else will know what is going on here. We will communicate in secret with any information we obtain.”

Trey stood up and nodded. He followed slowly behind his parents as they left the soundproof room. He suddenly felt anxious over Kailee, and he needed to see her. And deep inside he prayed that the vision his mother had had nothing to do with his unicorn.
