01 - Chapter One - Quinn Wolfin's Point Of View.
Imagine having a mother that wasn't the best parent all because of anevent, an event that turned the mother you once knew into acompletely different person. My dear mother, the woman who createdme was also the monster that hunted in all of my nightmares. Whenshe birthed me she gave me the name Quinn, it paired well with ourlast name Wolfin. Quinn Wolfin, that is who I am. In twenty-four hourswould mark the day I had been born sixteen years earlier. I tried to be anormal teenage boy whose drunk mother didn't beat him over thesilliest little things but you can only lie to yourself so many times beforeeven you can see through them. After going through photos on myphone I set it aside and thought about her, my mother.
Earlier we had gotten into a fight and she stormed off drunk, I worriedfor her because how could one drive that drunk. I had hoped mumwould be back by now but she was nowhere to be seen, no doubthaving gone to get even drunk and drown her anger with alcohol. Mymother was well-known for going to get drunk or leaving & going onvacations when the thought of my father leaving her danced around inher damaged mind. Things had gotten much worse after my motherhad found out my father had remarried and she couldn't let it go thatfather didn't want her anymore. Dad had tried to get me to spendChristmas with him and his new wife Luanne, but selfishly I didn't wantto spend Christmas with my father and a woman who wasn't mymother. Mom had drunk before she left the proof sat on the table andstared at me, almost begging me to dump the shit down the drain. Theopen bottle of wine with the half-full glass next to it seemed to be mymother's calling card. It was something I was far too used to that itdidn't look out-of-place. I sat on the couch and was adamant to waituntil my mother came home so that I knew she was okay.
A hard knock on the door woke me up from a sound sleep. It was fourin the morning; perhaps mom had lost her house keys. When I got tothe door & opened it the two policemen were enough to make merealize what had happened. She's dead.
"Hello young man, my name is Officer Clarkson, and this is OfficerAndrew's, you are going to need to come with us. There's been anaccident and your guardian has passed away. We contacted your nextlegal guardian your father and he has sent one of his friends to come toget you as he is unable to come to get you."
Shock set in and I slowly followed the officers not even bothering tolock the door. Once in the back of the car I looked at the officers andspoke.
"Am I going to have to identify her dead body..... She is dead right?""Yes, you will have to identify her as her kin. She was pronounced deadon the scene.”
"Oh"
The drive was slow. I swear I could count seconds in between theseconds that passed. The officers had turned up the heat in the car anddidn't speak; this allowed me to stew in my thoughts. Mom was gone. The good of her, the bad of her, she was all gone. Dead. What wouldhappen to our home, my stuff and most of all me? I hadn't evennoticed the car had stopped until the officer had pulled the door openand ushered me out. The walk across the parking lot was quicker than Ithought because soon after I was in the station and inhaling the smellof stale doughnuts and reheated coffee. Officer Andrews placed hishand on my back and lead me to his office.
"Would you like anything..."
"Quinn... My name is Quinn"
"Would you like anything to drink Quinn?"
"Could I have a glass of warm water..."
"Absolutely."
I knew warm water was strange but it was something I had found thathelped relax me.
Lord knows how long I sat in the office before dad's "friend" arrived."Hello Quinn, I'm your father's friend Arrow Kangee."
My father's friend looked only a few years older than me and certainlyway better looking than I was. He had beautiful brown eyes thatmatched well with his golden blond hair.
"I'm Quinn, your friend's son.”
He was smiling as if he had missed the notice that he was here to getme because my mother was dead. For some reason, he seemed thetype that would smile at a funeral. I watched as he signed papers andtold the officers my father would call them, I stood up and he led meout of the station and into a sleek as fuck sports car. If I hadn't been sowrapped up in worry I would have been so amazed at the car.
"I'm going to drive you back to your house so you can grab what youneed to stay with your father permanently. Ok?"
"Ok."
He started the car with the push-button start and it purred to life. Heturned on the radio and drove. The music on the radio was alright. Thesounds fell on deaf ears.
"What's going to happen to my mother's house & our stuff?"
"Your father is going to have it put in a storage locker and he's going tokeep the house for when you're older, what you do then will be yourchoice."
OK”
We pulled into the driveway and I got out. Emotions crashed over meas I realized this would be the last time I would be here for a long while,Who knew the next time I would be back to my family home. Walkingup the drive I opened the door and walked inside. The first thing thatlooked at me from the dark was the wine bottle. I grabbed the bottleand walked to the sink, I watched as the horrible liquid poured downthe drain.
Setting the bottle on the counter I walked towards my room and closedMum's door on the way there. The click of the door shutting echoedthrough the house like never before. My room seemed stale and un-breathable. I opened my closet and pulled out my suitcase, I set it onmy bed and packed the most important clothing I couldn't live without.I grabbed my phone and tucked it into my pocket before leaving theroom. Arrow was looking at all the photos on the wall, but the one thatheld his attention was the one from my tenth birthday party.
"I was ten when that was taken."
"You all look so happy."
"I thought we all were.”
"I'm sorry for your loss Quinn.”
"It was only a matter of time I think..."
Slowly I dragged my suitcase behind me towards the door silentlyletting him know I was more than ready to get the heck out of thisplace.
"Here let me help you with your suitcase.”
Arrows hand brushed mine and some tingles ran up my arm confusingme greatly. I added it up to be a static shock. Arrow closed the trunkand we both climbed into his car. He turned it on and pulled out of thedriveway
