- Mecum to Auction a Stunning Schuppan 962CR This Weekend
- Only Six Exemplars of This Ultra-Rare Exotic Exist
- Equipped with a Twin-Turbo Flat-6, Delivering Approximately 600 HP
The Porsche 962 is celebrated as one of the most iconic and victorious race cars in motorsports history. Now, enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to own a road-going variant closely related to the legendary 962: the Schuppan 962CR.
Mecum is set to auction off one of these extraordinary machines during the 2024 Monterey Car Week in California. The Schuppan 962CR is a marvel of automotive engineering, designed by Vern Schuppan, an Australian racing legend who clinched victory at the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Porsche 956.
In the early ’90s, Schuppan embarked on creating a street-legal version of the 962, resulting in the Schuppan 962CR. Designed by Mike Simcoe, now head of design at General Motors, the 962CR was intended as a limited-run supercar with only 50 units planned. However, due to economic challenges in Japan, only seven were completed: four 962CRs and three 962LMs.
One of the six surviving 962CRs up for auction is chassis number AS 962CR 05/50, completed in 1993 with a mere 91 miles on the odometer. This pristine example was previously owned by Schuppan’s neighbor in the U.K., who preserved it for three decades. Another 962CR was featured on “Jay Leno’s Garage” in 2018.
The Schuppan 962CR is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter flat-six engine, producing approximately 600 hp. This power is managed through a 5-speed manual transmission, and the car features a carbon-fiber body and tub, closely mirroring the 962 race car’s design. Schuppan’s project received full endorsement from Porsche, ensuring authenticity and performance.
The auction will take place on August 16, with Mecum also offering a Shelby Cobra rumored to have once been owned by Steve McQueen. Don’t miss this rare chance to own a piece of automotive history.
