Falco finished all the paperwork in a bundle to start on the accounts. The pressure of his alpha not being in the pack put a lot of responsibility on his shoulders that he should not and could not delegate to anyone else.

She was grateful that her husband was taking care of the other things, like organising the new members, keeping track of supplies, and making excuses for all those who asked why they hadn’t seen their alpha for days, even when his rut should have been over. In addition, the question of where her fiancé was was the most common, especially from her cubs, who kept questioning Bastian about their mother’s whereabouts.

The pretext that they had gone with Lucian to settle some urgent matters would soon vanish.

Falco pitied him. Already dark spots were appearing under his eyes, ruining his natural beauty. She heard him sigh every now and then and even though she answered him with her usual smile she could see how the worry was overwhelming him more and more.

The door to his office opened, revealing him with a tray in his hands.

-Dinner,” he placed it on the table and began to organise the papers that had fallen out of place, “Any news?

The beta shook his head and went about his business.

-All right,” he gave her a k**s on the cheek and walked towards the door.

-The wolf knew him well enough to know that it wasn’t normal for him not to be throwing a tantrum that his husband hadn’t just moved the stronger wolves and gone off to replace his protector.

Bastian turned and gave a forced smile again, the one that hid all his emotions.

-You’re too busy with all the pack’s work. If you haven’t done it, you have your reasons.

The beta nodded and went back to his business, listening as he left him again in the solitude of the vast den. He was grateful that his companion did not put more work on his shoulders. He hadn’t sensed any alerts from Dante or any calls, being his beta he was more sensitive to knowing if he was in danger, so he just focused on keeping up with the work.

The door opened again, revealing Dmitri with a serious look on his face.

-I just spoke to Bastian.

-That saves me explaining,” he wrote some numbers on the sheet.

The twin saw the plate of food on the table.

-Hey, I know you’re worried like everyone else, but Dante is a straight and true alpha, capable of standing up for himself. He’ll be fine, which is why you should think more about you,” he nodded where he’d come in, “And your wolf.

Falco stopped what he was doing.

-What about him?

-Why don’t you take care of him a bit, he looks like he’s about to fall apart. Even though he smiles at everyone, those of us who know him have noticed he’s overexerting himself.

Falco sighed, running his hand through his hair. He had to admit that these last two days they had barely seen each other. Only when he brought her some information or food, as he spent all his time in the office and only stopped to eat or take a quick bath.

With so much going on around her she had noticed the change in Bastian but didn’t think so much of it. He could be her husband and the wolf that had marked him but he would never fully understand.

-Can you take care of this,” he pointed to the things on the table, there was still someone he could trust with the job, even a little, “I’d like to rest and see to some business,” he said.

Mitya sat back on the sofa, smiling.

-Go away and if tomorrow I see Bastian with the same expression as today I promise to beat you to a pulp, work your magic,” he said.

The beta growled at him and picked up something light from his plate, putting it in his mouth and realizing how hungry he was.

He walked towards his room where the scent of his mate grew stronger. At that time of night he should be making his bed, he wasn’t a wolf to be up this late unless it was a full moon or their bodies were having a customary fiery encounter.

She opened the door and the room was dimly lit. She looked for him with her eyes and found him sitting on the edge of the bed with his back to her. She was hunched over hugging a cushion and her shoulders were shaking slightly.

She sighed as she came closer, and saw him wiping his face. She sat behind him and wrapped her arm around his waist as she placed a small k**s on the back of his neck.

-What’s wrong?

He squeezed the cushion tighter and stopped the sobs that refused to hide.

-Nothing, I’m just tired, you don’t have to worry, you’ve got a lot to think about already.

Falco sighed again, realizing that he did it so often, and kissed the crown of her head.

-If you don’t tell me what you’ve got, I’ll go and sleep somewhere else. I have the night off and I feel like blowing off some steam.

Bastian turned quickly and hugged him, burying his face in his chest. The beta wrapped his arms around him and caressed his back trying to calm the sobs that came again.

-Where is he, Falco? He never leaves without telling me. He hadn’t recovered from the jealousy- her words choked on the fabric of his shirt- What if something happened to him? What if he’s in danger?

The wolf now understood his change of heart. He had never competed for his affection with Dante. Starting with the fact that they were totally different. He couldn’t remember when the wolf had started to interest him, after all, he had been raised as the alpha’s right hand man prepared to have the cool head to protect the pack in the worst case scenario and had always thought he would never have a wolf for life.

From the first time he had seen him and his alpha had adopted him as his protégé he had chased him around like a shadow. But the day he turned away, claiming that he no longer wanted him and that he would marry the stranger who was courting him and thought he felt relief, his whole world turned on him and from being used to solitude, he found himself needing to be in company all the time.

He hadn’t fallen in love with Bastian overnight, but now, years later, he wouldn’t leave Bastian’s side for anyone. He knew how to fill all those needs in his life. Their relationship wasn’t perfect, but it was balanced.

-Dante will be fine and I’m sure Lukyan will too. Lucian’s a son of a bitch, but he won’t do anything to start a war between the packs, he’s too smart for that.

She felt him raise his head with a pout.

-Really?

-Really?

The tear-streaked, tear-stained, messed-up face made him let out a slight inward snort.

-Come, I’ll give you a bath. You need to rest. I’ll stay with you all night and help you relax,” and he of all people knew how.

She slipped her hand under his knees and carried him into the bathroom where a huge tub was half full of water. He only needed to turn on the faucet for the hot water to fill the other half as he placed him on the edge of the sink and began to remove his shirt.

Bastian raised his arms as the cloth was pulled over his head. Her husband’s fingers opened his trousers and he lifted a little so that he could remove them and his underwear.

-K**s me,” Bastian asked in the same voice that reminded him of when he was a young man begging her to let him sleep in his own room.

Falco finished removing his own shirt. He took her chin between his fingers and kissed her lips. A soft, quiet, relaxed k**s, the likes of which they hadn’t had in a long time.

He turned off the tap and checked the water temperature. She finished taking everything off and approached her husband.

-Come on,” she grabbed his arms and made him hold onto her neck, but he pinned him between her legs and kissed him again. Falco let him savour it, taking the opportunity to outline the slender back until he ended at her buttocks which he squeezed between his fingers drawing him to him pressing both sexes together.

She heard him m**n against her lips.

-First let me wash you my little one, then you are free to do with my body as you wish,” Falco gasped.

He nodded his head and held on as she held him by the thighs and pulled them both into the tub straddling the beta.

Falco grabbed the soap and scrubbed it between his hands until a thick lather came out. He stroked his husband’s neck, tracing the curve of his shoulder, his collarbone. She continued down his arms, intertwining her fingers.

Bastian just stood still watching as his wolf roamed his body paying attention to every inch of his skin. His fingers found the rise of her breast and then her nipples that stood up begging for the required attention.

-You’re not chattering like we always do,” he received no response.

With her nails she caressed the area around both of them and then took them between her fingers and squeezed them. Bastian had to pull his hands back and hold on to his husband’s strong thighs as he played.

-I shouldn’t have used so much foam,” she heard him curse under his breath and knew what he meant.

Falco was addicted to biting her nipples and leaving them red and swollen and other things when they did it. Bastian knew it was the part of her anatomy he liked the most even if they weren’t prominent.

And after so much insistent attention over their years together it had become a very sensitive area. So he found himself biting his l*p holding back m***s with only the faintest of caresses.

A hand pulled him by the nape of his neck and her husband’s tongue ran along his lips.

-Don’t bite down. We’re alone, you can m**n all you want.

Bastian smiled. Anyone who didn’t know the beta and only saw him would think he was a hard block of ice who only sheathed fear, but he could attest that beneath that carcass formed by his upbringing. He was someone who was very attentive, caring and when he had mentioned he was good in bed to Lukyan he hadn’t exaggerated and was about to prove it to him again.
