A Wolf For The Gangster -
Chapter 12
The next morning, everything is in an uproar because the Don is someone who does not forgive mistakes. He frowns as he looks down at his right hand.
-If Tamara is a huge distraction, I'll be forced to send her to Dominicko," he says seriously.
-Don, I swear, I didn't know about those boys....
He raises his hand to shut her up.
-They could have killed her because of your carelessness. It's your damn duty to check who comes in and out of my house. -Fer nods. Get out, I don't want to see you or I'll end up shoving my fist in your f*****g face.
Fer leaves the office angry about what happened. In Italian he shouts to one of the guards to gather all the staff in the equipment area. He takes out a cigarette and grabs his gun. It doesn't take five minutes before all the staff, whether cleaning or security, are gathered in front of him. Many know that Fer is just as cool as the Don, so they respect him. He looks at them seriously.
-I want to know who the f**k let in the guys who shot Kara.
One of the security guys steps forward.
-Sir, I wanted to protect the dignity of the Don and his fiancée, so I hired goons to take out her lover. I saw them having s*x on the boat," he reports, half unsure of what he had sent them to do.
Fer's body tenses and he immediately orders one of his guards to replace the Don. He tells the others to leave.
-Who the f**k do you think you are to go around doing whatever you want? -The Don is furious. Not caring about the wound, he lifts him up by the neck. The boy looks at him in terror.
-Don... I just wanted to..." The grip on his throat tightens, preventing him from speaking.
-Don't you do whatever you want here, capisci[1]?
-I'm sorry, Don," he murmurs.
-Gli errori non sono perdonati[2]. -He ends the boy's life with his hands and drops the body, which falls like a rag doll on the ground. Take care of this. -He passes by Fer's side.
On the other side, Kara wakes up after being asleep for several hours on painkillers. Her stomach growls for lack of food. She gets out of bed carefully, goes to the bathroom and changes her bandage. How ironic life is. Now she and the Don are hurt. She sighs as she manages to get dressed without hurting herself and then leaves her room for the kitchen. She meets Minerva, who smiles sheepishly at her.
-I'm glad you're awake. I was about to go upstairs to bring you something to eat, but since you're here, come on up to the dining room to help yourself.
Kara goes into the huge dining room and takes a seat. A couple of minutes pass before she has a steak in front of her, along with some vegetables and sauces. She eats it all in silence, until her stomach churns and she ends up expelling it all to the side of her chair. The Don, who has just arrived, approaches the she-wolf and picks up her hair to keep it from getting dirty.
-The doctor said there could be side effects from the painkillers," he says.
-I'm sorry I soiled your floor.
-Don't worry about it. Come, I'll take you to your room and ask Minerva to make you some juice. His gentle treatment takes the she-wolf by surprise, but she doesn't say anything, just lets him take her to her room and then to the bathroom. Kara washes out her mouth and heads to her bed.
The Don leaves the bedroom and then returns with the juice. He watches her drink it all and stays by her side for long minutes that seem like hours.
Kara is comfortable with his presence and even likes having him around. His scent calms her and makes her feel protected.
-Why are you like this? -she dares to ask.
It leaves him confused.
-How come?
-One day you're an emotionless beast, and the next day you're a prince from a fairy tale.
He frowns.
-I don't know," he says honestly. I think you make me different, puppy. -He looks into her eyes.
Kara's heart races as she realises that the huge man in front of her may feel more than just s****l desire.
-But in the world I'm in, feeling is weakness, and I don't want to be weak. -His aura shifts to a darker one, and so does his gaze. Rest.
He rises from the bed and strides out of the room.
He leaves a void in Kara's chest.
(...)
-I told you what would happen if you didn't complete the shipment. -He pulls out a cigar to light it and gives it a suck. He lets the smoke out of his mouth and looks seriously at the big-bellied man who now has bruises on his face from the blows he took. -Don, I swear I didn't know anything about the raid," he sobbed in terror.
-I don't know if I believe your words, Massimo. -He pulls up a chair to take a seat opposite him. You wanted to take charge and look what happened: we lost the merchandise. -He smokes and blows the smoke in his face. -There must be a snitch.
-Still, you should have known and handled the situation. -The seriousness in his words makes it clear that no matter how hard he tries to refute it, the blame will always be his.
-Don, please forgive me," he begs for his life as the Don rises from his chair.
-Massimo, what I promise," he raises his gun, "I keep. -See you on the other side," he mutters and leaves a black rose, a symbol that a kingpin killed the guy.
The ringleaders in Sicily are four: Don, Dominicko, Alessandro and Karim. Their names are respected by all and nobody dares to talk about them or go against them.
-Clean up everything. Fer, take charge of replaceing out who took the shipment.
With his order given, he heads for his black late-model Maserati.
