Chapter 762: Why is Someone Trying to HarmHim?
These men's faces were twisted with pain as they struggled on thechairs.
“This is a society governed by the rule of law!"
"There is surveillance here. Are you aware of the consequences oftaking matters into your own hands like this?"
“This is illegal the way you are doing it!"
Franklin sneered, "A robber talking to me about the law? Don't youthink that's ridiculous?"
Those bloodthirsty eyes gleamed with a fierce and ruthless light.
The look in the man's eyes was too scary.
“I heard... you guys used steel pipes to beat up Wright?" Franklinraised his eyebrows fiercely, “Tell me, who ordered you to do this?"The man casually tapped the table, still maintaining his nobledemeanor. However, his cold voice revealed his extreme displeasure atthe moment. "I'll give you one chance only. If you don't speak, I'm afraidyou can't bear the consequences.
Sylvia was just outside watching the records, and now she had comein.
She had been watching coldly all along, and it was obvious that thesemen in black clothes did not want to speak.
Even if Jasper broke their arms, they wouldn't tell the truth.
She walked up to Franklin and casually glanced at the black-clad men."Do you know about a notorious woman in history named AmirahBanks? She invented a punishment called the laughter torture, whichdoesn't physically harm the body but causes unbearable itching thatcannot be controlled. Eventually, one would die from lack of oxygendue to uncontrollable laughter.”
"If you don't tell the truth, I'd like to try it on you."
Franklin looked at Sylvia and couldn't help but curl his lips.
"And there are many terrible punishments, and I don't mind trying themall on you."
These black-clad men clutched their limp arms, their faces pale frompain, and moaned incessantly.
Right now, in their eyes, the man and woman before them seemedextremely terrifying.
One of the men quickly scanned his companions and said, "We can'tbetray them. Instead of being tortured to death by you, it's better to endit ourselves!”
After all, betrayal was also death. Whether they were tortured to deathor not, it was all the same.
They might as well die early and break free from suffering.
As the man's voice fell, suddenly a wail of sorrow rose up again.
"Oh no! They bit their tongues and committed suicide!" Franklin's facewas dark and his voice was low, with a hint of coldness.
He never expected that this group of black-clothed people would be sofierce.
Director Mays was so frightened that he quickly called out, "Quickly!Quickly, pry open their mouths!"
"Don't let everyone die!"
"Really stupid! They actually thought that biting their tongue wouldreally kill them, just like in TV dramas? That's all a lie in TV dramas,"Sylvia said as she kicked the nearest man to her. "You guys are big andstrong, how could you possibly die from just biting your tongue? That'sjust ridiculous.”
"Since you're not afraid of pain and you don't want your tonguesanymore. Jasper, cut their tongues off, bit by bit," Franklin ordered.Jasper immediately produced a dagger from somewhere, its bladeshimmering with an eerie, cold light under the lamp.
He then approached the first black-clad man, gripped his head, andthrust the dagger into his mouth.
Originally, Director Mays had instructed his subordinates to hold themouths of these black-clad men open, and it happened to make iteasier for Jasper to carry out his gruesome task.
“No, no, please!"
Watching their own tongues being cut off bit by bit, who could enduresuch a sight?
Jasper hadn't even been operated on yet! As soon as he touched theother person's tongue, he started to mumble and howl.
It was too ridiculous to even mention.
In ten minutes, the man stepped forward while rolling up his sleeves.A beautiful and graceful woman also walked out with him.
Director Mays, accompanied by the police and Jasper, was also closelyfollowing behind.
“Thank you, Mr. Maskelyne and Miss Andrews."
Director Mays said with a satisfied expression, "Take your time, takeyour time."
"Director Mays, please." Franklin smirked. "I hope you can apprehendthe mastermind behind the scenes."
After they left the police station and getting into the car, Isla’s phonerang.
"Master, we have found out who reported and framed Secretary Cody.""Who?" Franklin's voice was cold and low.
“Clark.”
The man narrowed his sharp eyes, a hint of coldness flashing throughthem. What kind of grudge or conflict did Clark and Cody have? Whydid he want to get rid of Cody?
There was a look of confusion and puzzlement in his eyes, as if he feltlike he had missed some important information.
"Go to the prison where Clark is being held," Franklin said to Jasperafter hanging up the phone.
Franklin told her the content of the phone call he just received. Thewoman's dark eyes flashed with confusion. "One is a governmentofficial, and the other is a well-known local entrepreneur. How couldthere be such strong animosity between them?"
Clark's plan to frame and report Cody was clearly meant to lead him tohis death, without any hope of making a comeback.
"That's something only Clark himself knows," she said.
The car raced towards the direction of the prison as Jasper turned onthe radio that came with it. Suddenly, a sweet female voice interruptedthe music playing on air: "Breaking news! All drivers, especially thoseworking for ride-sharing services or taxis, please be aware that severaldangerous criminals have escaped from City North Prison through anunderground tunnel they dug themselves."
“The three escapees are Clark, Acevedo and Kole... If you come acrossthese fugitives who are soaking wet from their escape in waterwaysnearby City North Prison within ten minutes ago or so, please stay alertand report them immediately."
“The police have launched an all-out manhunt for these fugitives inorder to bring them back into custody as soon as possible."
The atmosphere inside the car became extremely tense.
Jasper took some time before reacting, “Clark escaped? How can thisbe? City North Prison has tight security measures; how could hepossibly get out? This man is unbelievable!"
"City North Prison is located by sea; behind it lies open waters," Sylviasaid with an unpleasant expression on her face. "If he managed to dighis way out through an underground tunnel leading towards waterwaysoutside prison walls... It wouldn't be impossible. There was even amovie called “Escape’ about this kind of thing before.”
"It seems like we don't need to go after him anymore." Franklin feltuneasy for no apparent reason; things seemed like they were spiralingout of control.
"What worries me most now is if he continues targeting Wright."“You're right," Sylvia nodded in agreement. "We need more personnelat the hospital.”
“Let's head back there first." Franklin instructed Jasper who then drovetowards their destination once again.
In open waters where one couldn't see land anywhere around them,Clark kept swimming forward while frantically waving his arms aroundtrying not to drown.
He looked up at the blue sky above him and escaped. He had finallyescaped. Franklin, Sylvia, Cody! None of the people who had hurt himwould be able to live. Two burly men followed him desperately in hisdirection. In this cold weather, the icy seawater was bone-chilling andthey were freezing with purple lips, but they refused to give up.
Finally, a fishing boat came towards them with two old fishermen onboard. One of them widened his eyes and said, "Hey bro, do you seesomeone over there?" The other replied quickly,"Yeah! Three people!""Quickly! Throw out the rope!” Clark and his two companions werefinally rescued onto the boat.
The two kind-hearted old men gave them some dry food that theybrought along with them."How did you end up drifting in the sea?Luckily it wasn't high tide today; otherwise you would have been introuble.”
Clark was handsome and smiled softly; he looked harmless. "Sir, weare just a family out for a trip when our boat started leaking.”
"Who knows what really happened on that boat? We'll take you back toshore now.”
“Yeah! Hurry up and contact your family members." The three of themate something to regain their strength while sitting on board watchingas the two old men drove their boat quickly towards shore.
The feeling of breathing freely was really good. Clark sat on deckstaring at the blue sea water but couldn't help thinking about Winter'sface which he hadn't seen for so long.
In a remote mountain village by a small river where many men andwomen washed clothes or vegetables by its banks stood Winter whowas heavily pregnant struggling to carry her bucket of water into hersmall wooden house.
"Winter, you're about to give birth soon, right? How can you still carrywater yourself?" An elderly woman wearing a floral cotton coat passedby her carrying some onions asked sympathetically.
"I have no choice; I'm living alone here,” Winter replied wiping sweatfrom her forehead after putting down her bucket of water.
"Oh dear me... it's not good without any man around here... if your childis born without a father then it won't be good either... why don't Iintroduce someone for you?" The elderly woman winked suggestivelyat Winter trying to play matchmaker for her but she just smiled politelysaying, "No thanks; I'm fine alone."
As she smiled by the riverside, many men couldn't help but gawk.Even some married women, upon seeing their husbands staring, wouldangrily grab their men by the ear and scold, "What are you looking at?What's so attractive about a woman with a bastard in her belly?"
"Ow, ow, ow!"
The pregnant woman, her belly protruding, showed no change in herexpression, as if she had long grown numb to such comments.
She continued carrying the water forward. A man in his thirties, seeingthis, immediately rushed over to take the water bucket from her andasked with concern, "Winter, why are you fetching water by yourselfagain? Why didn't you call me?"
