Chapter 1

KRISNA

The birds chirping wakes me up and I roll to my side and smile when I see Ruse still in bed. My sweet Gamma male. He ran the wolf trials last year and didn’t join a pack. He insisted I would be his Alpha and his mate and that he would be staying with me. There hasn’t been a female Alpha in decades and his belief that I would be one makes me happy.

This pack is nothing like my old one. They are free with themselves and believe that connection to another helps your wolf spirit. Here all the Alphas are scattered. Their lands are massive, so each Alpha has their own piece of land, but they still all answer to the dominant male, which is Ruse’s own father.

When Ruse came back from the wolf run a Gamma, his father was not even mad at him. He still praised him and told him he would make a wonderful Gamma. Ruse’s younger brother Colin will be running with me this year.

Reaching over to Ruse, I run my hand through his ash blond hair, watching his sleepy hazel eyes land on me. Before I know it, he snatches me and I land on his chest.

“Good morning, beautiful.” He k****s me hard, and I smile into the k**s. Since he came back with his wolf and claimed he could scent me, he has been insatiable. Ruse and I have been best friends since his father found me, and only two years ago we confessed our feelings for one another. He is a firm believer that I will be an Alpha and thinks I will one day regret letting a Gamma claim me.

“Yes Ruse, I love you and that will never ever change, and I want the world to know it.” I once again use my heel to urge him to move again, which he does as he takes one of my nipples in his mouth, sucking it until it is hard, and he moves to do the same with the other nipple. As we dress for the morning, I get excited. I love spending mornings with Ruse’s father. They are like my family too and now that I am Ruse’s mate; we are officially family. For a moment, sadness washes over me as I think about my family and how they would have loved Ruse. “Ready beautiful?”

“Ready.” I take his hand and I lead him to his father’s home.

Getting to the Alpha’s home, I look at the wooden exterior. It is the largest home and is made entirely of wood. Before we can even open the door, Ruse’s brother Colin opens the door and then his arms to me. For a while he wasn’t allowed to touch me when Ruse was still new in our mating, he nearly killed his brother.

“Come eat sister.” I smile up at him and let him lead me to the table where Ruse’s mom has laid out a buffet. I smell deer, eggs, and her famous homemade bread with apple jam. My mouth waters as all the scents hit my nose.

“Hello, daughter.” I turn and my arms open immediately and I’m engulfed in a giant bear hug from his father. “Are you ready for the wolf run?”

I look up at the Alpha and smile. “I am. I have every confidence that I will at least make a Beta spot.”

Chuckling, his father says. “I think you will make Alpha for sure. How do you feel about seeing your old pack?” That question I was dreading. They knew what happened when I came here. There was nothing they could do since they were not part of my old pack, but they took me in and cared for me.

“I am not even worried about seeing them. They mean nothing to me.” I swallow thickly thinking of my best friends. While they mean nothing to me, memories still haunt me of Renwick, Juniper, Kale and Thorin. I know they will be there, and I also know that Renwick and Thorin ran the Wolf Run last year along with Ruse. He told me they were ruthless, but he didn’t know what they were because at one point near the deciding point, they split.

I would be running with Juniper and Kale. A sense of needing to be better than them hits me hard. I want them to see that what happened has only made me a stronger person. That their betrayal made me strong and didn’t tear me apart like they wanted.

Ruse wraps his arms around me and hugs me close to him. He can sense my emotions and understand my turmoil. “Come, my love, let’s eat.” He pulls me closer to the table and pulls out a chair for me and pushes it in once I sit. Ruse’s mother starts piling food on the plates and soon the dining area is quiet except for the sound of chewing and the occasional satisfied grunt.

I think about seeing Juniper and Kale. The last time I saw them, their faces were enraged, and they looked at me as if they hated me. A tension headache starts to pound behind my eyes, and I close them for a moment, hoping it will go away. Today is not the day to be off kelter, I need to be focused so I can run for my wolf.

“Mera Pyaar, are you okay?” My love. A satisfied feeling inside me rises when I hear Ruse say that to me.

“I am. I’m just excited to start the run today.” Looking over at Collin, I grab his attention. “Are you nervous?”

His smile takes over his whole face. “No, I know I will end up in a good pack and as far as what my wolf will be, no matter the rank, I know I will be strong.”

“That, my boy, is a good outlook to have.” The Alpha’s voice is cheery as he smiles at his son. “Maybe you will replace a wonderful mate like Krisna.”

“Now, wouldn’t that be nice? Maybe I am her mate and just haven’t scented her yet.” Collin looks over at me and it is not an uncomfortable feeling, more curious than anything.

I look over at Ruse, who also has a curious look on his face. “Well, if that is the case, brother, then know you would get an amazing mate.”

“Would you be okay with sharing a mate with me?” Collin stares steadily at Ruse and when Ruse smiles, I see relief pass through Collin.

“If she is yours, brother, I would be so happy.” Ruse starts to eat again. I look at Collin curiously and for me I wouldn’t mind. Collin would be a worthy mate. With Ruse there was always a kindling there, like a small fire that burst free when Ruse came back and claimed me.

“I wonder what this wolf run is going to be like? It seems like every run it gets harder and more dangerous.” I look at Ruse, who for a moment looks ashamed, before I run my hand along his leg.

“I wish I could tell you more, babe, but I didn’t make it as far as you and my brother will make it.”

I let the subject drop since I know that even though we accept him, Ruse is still struggling to accept that he didn’t make it as far as he wanted to. The feeling of dread comes back to me and I hate that I can’t shake it.

Again, I replace myself thinking of Juniper and Kale. Would they even recognize me anymore? I was such a scrawny kid and the last time they saw me, they were using their feet against me.

“Krisna, I have every faith in you that you will make us proud. We need you to come back home to us, to my son.”

“Thank you, Alpha Torch.” The faith that he has in me is something I always wanted to see from my father one day.

“Call me dad. You are a part of the family.”

I smile at him, feeling myself tear up. “Thank you, dad.”

“I know my boy will do amazing as well.” He smiles at Collin, who smiles at him before focusing back on me. “I do want to go over some things with you and Collin.” He looks at us both, making sure we are both listening.

Collin interrupts before he can say anything. “Is it about the wolf run?”

“Yes. The wolf run is meant to test you as a person. The more you complete, the stronger the wolf will be. The test is meant to bring out your fears. Halfway through, you will feel your wolf start to emerge, letting you know that you are coming up to the harder trials.”

“I’m ready, father.” Collin is sure of himself, and I hope for him that he comes back as an Alpha.

“I know you are Collin. I also want you to know that this is also an opportunity for you to meet your future pack mates, and maybe a future mate.”

Collin turns to me and winks playfully. “Krisna is my mate, I just know it.”

I lean across to him. “I don’t know if you could handle me.”

“You’re probably right there, Krisna.” Collin laughs before looking back at his father. “Since you are hosting this, that means you are giving the speech?”

“I will be doing it this year and showing you all where the starting point is, and I will be there at the very end.”

That is the weird thing about the trials, that when your wolf is telling you it is enough that a path is shown to you, and it always sends you to the end. I for one cannot wait to meet my wolf. She has always been there in spirit, but to be able to finally meet her will be phenomenal.

“Krisna will walk with me to the starting point and Collin, you have to be with her since I cannot stand inside the runner circle this year.” I can hear the worry in Ruse’s voice. He is worried that my ex best friends will try to kill me or sabotage me in some way. Wolves hold on to grudges for a long time.

“I planned to and once where the other runners will be, I will be too. I feel that I will make it pretty far, if not all the way, with Krisna, so I will help protect her if she will need it.” Collin is a sweetheart and I know that if I need him to, he will step in to save my life.

“We need to go soon to the gathering point. Many have already arrived since we have been here.” I polish off my plate and Ruse grabs my hand.

“Let’s head back to the hut before we go and get cleaned up and you in your runner outfit.” I smile at Ruse, and we say our goodbyes and head back to the hut. Once inside, I grab my white runner outfit. The fabric is different from anything else we have here, but it is tight and form fitting. The fabric is soft but flexible. Ruse mom cross stitched a pattern in the front. And I add my beads to my wrists.

“You look beautiful.” Ruse grabs me and slams his mouth against mine. I melt immediately, loving the way he smells and tastes against me. He is intoxicating and everything already that I think a mate bond is supposed to be like.

I can’t wait to mark him. I can’t wait for Ruse to be mine fully. I love him so much that I feel that being away from him for however long the trial is will be hard, but could also benefit me because my wolf will be pushing me, pushing me to get back to him.

“When I get back, you better be hydrated and stretched out, since I will be claiming you when I return.”

The low growl from Ruse has me immediately soaked. “I look forward to it.” Ruse pushes me against the wall of the hut again and his teeth replace his mating mark on my shoulder, and he bites down a little.

“F**k me.” I’m so ready for him, needing him to be inside me.

“This, my sexy mate, is an incentive. You need to hurry back to me.” Ruse backs away, leaving me panting with a smirk on his face. I look down and see his hard c**k and smile back at him. I reach down into the fabric, and I circle my clit, moaning loudly for him.
