Chapter 9

Arthur felt that his fiance was weak and vulnerable. So, he had to stop her imagination from running wild before it was too late.

As for Adriane… She was too tired to explain that she did not want to sleep with him either.

Holding the clothes, Adriane obediently got out of Arthur’s room. Yael, who had been waiting for her outside her room, opened the door for her. Then he respectfully greeted Adriane, “Mrs. Jenkins, we have no maids in this mansion. Can you manage it yourself, or do you need a maid to help you out?”

Adriane had been independent since she was a kid. So she shook her head and said that she could manage it herself.

Yael smiled and said, “The food and medicine will be delivered to your room in a moment. Please remember to take them. Rest well and sweet dreams,

Mrs. Jenkins.”

After Yael left, Adriane looked around her room. As expected, it was just like Arthur’s room, decorated in black, white, and grey. It was elegant but not cozy enough.

However, Adriane did not mind. After all, it was great to have a place to live. In her past life, she often slept in the open. She did not even get a peaceful sleep each night when she was on the run.

Adriane took a quick bath because she was feeling a little hazy. After changing into her pajamas, she ate a few mouthfuls of food and went to bed.

It was a peaceful night. The next morning, Adriane felt refreshed than ever. The cold feeling she felt last night disappeared.

She tested the temperature on her forehead with the back of her hand. It was normal, and the fever had subsided. After all, Adriane was Juliette’s blood bank, Adriane had to maintain good body stamina to stay alive. So, she had been working out every day.

Barefoot, she stepped out of bed, walked to the window, and pulled open the curtain. The morning sun poured in along with the melodious chirping of the birds outside the window.

She opened a small crack in the window and breathed in the fresh air.

“It was not a dream. I have reincarnated and was given a second chance,” she thought happily.

That day was a sunny day after heavy rain last night. Adriane began to wonder if that meant she would have a bright future.

After taking her bath and brushing her teeth, she looked through the clothes the pantryman had brought yesterday. She could not figure out what to wear. Those attires were of all kinds of styles.

It was July in Berkton City. After pondering for a while, Adriane picked up a shirt with dandelions on it. It was a colorful shirt that suited her age. Then she chose a pair of pale blue denim shorts. She tucked the hem of her shirt into the pants. It made her long and slender legs more attractive.

Adriane found that Yael was standing right between Arthur’s room and hers when she opened her bedroom door. Yael bowed once he saw Adriane and greeted her, “Good morning, Mrs. Jenkins. Do you want to have your breakfast now?”

Although Adriane had heard it many times, she still could not help herself from repeating, “You really should call me Miss Stewart instead of Mrs. Jenkins. Where is Mr. Arthur?”

“Mr. Arthur is still in his bed. Why don’t you have your breakfast while you wait for him, Mrs. Jenkins?”

“Alright,” said Adriane speechlessly.

Yael led Adriane to the first floor to have her breakfast. Various types from different parts of the world like American breakfast, Asian breakfast, and even Mexican breakfast were on the table. Adriane knew she could not finish them all, so she only took what she preferred.

After eating her breakfast, Adriane walked upstairs and entered Arthur’s room after getting Yael’s permission.

Her nose was so sharp that she could smell some of the distinctive smells in the room. It was Arthur’s medication and drips.

The thick divider blocked Adriane’s view of Arthur’s bed. She walked towards the inner part of the room behind the divider. Soon, she finally saw what was behind it.

She realized that there were so many high–end medical instruments at the head of the bed, and the pale man lay on the bed peacefully with his eyes closed. There was a needle on the back of his palm. It was attached to a drip hanging on the hanger by his bed.

Arthur had that terrible accident at the end of last year. The doctor managed to rescue him from death, but he was in a coma for half a year. He had just

woken from his coma last month.

Adriane knew some nursing knowledge because Juliette had serious health issues too. She could see that Arthur was weak and seemed like he was still on the verge of death.

Thinking of how he protected her at the engagement ceremony yesterday and then dealt with Josie mercilessly, Adriane felt it difficult to relate the Arthur she saw yesterday with the man lying on the bed weakly in front of her now.

Adriane walked towards Arthur’s bed slowly with light steps and looked at his perfect jawline. When his eyes were closed, his eyelashes looked thicker

than usual.

She leaned over slightly and tried to measure the length of Arthur’s eyelashes. Then she gasped and thought, “Gosh! Those eyelashes are crazy.

Adriane looked at Arthur’s pale face and his tightly closed lips. She frowned and thought, “Doesn’t he even relax in his sleep?”

When she was about to leave, the eyes she was looking at opened suddenly. Arthur gazed at Adriane with his dark eyes. He did not look like he had just gotten up. His gaze was sharp and cold.

Adriane was startled. Her eyes widened, and her mind went blank. She froze and forgot to back away.

Adriane was petrified by the look in Arthur’s eyes. She began to wonder what amazing things Arthur could do if he was not ill.

When Arthur saw Adriane observing him, he did not look as wary as before. But he still said, “Get out now.”

Adriane did not expect that Arthur would ask her to leave. So, she puffed her cheeks, dissatisfied with Arthur’s attitude. But she still left the room.

As soon as she took one step out of the room, she heard something heavy falling behind her. She turned around just in time and saw Arthur fall back onto

the bed.

Although she tried to keep her composure, there was a hint of surprise in her expression. She thought, “So Arthur still doesn’t have enough strength to lift himself now?”

Arthur was unhappier tharrjust now. He panted a little as he said word by word, “I told you to get out.”

Adriane knew that it would be difficult for him to sit up alone, but she also understood that he did not want others to see him like this. After all, he had been a healthy man all his life until the accident turned him into someone who could barely take care of himself.

Feeling sorry for Arthur, Adriane comforted him, “Okay, calm down! I will go out.”

Walking out of the inner part of the bedroom, Adriane looked at Yael, who was waiting outside. She did not know how to explain to Yael about Arthur’s situation. So, she only gazed at Yael, saying nothing.

Yael instantly understood what Adriane wanted to say. He apologized and said, “Mrs. Jenkins, please wait here.”

Then, Yael shut the door behind him after he went into the bedroom. After a while, Yael opened the door and spoke respectfully to Adriane, “Mrs. Jenkins, you can come in now.”

She peered cautiously inside the bedroom and asked, “Doesn’t it matter?”

Yael nodded. He did not expect that Arthur would react like that even with his fiance. After all, Yael had helped Arthur get into his wheelchair when Adriane was sleeping on the sofa in his bedroom last night. So, Yael thought Arthur did not mind.

Yael realized that his action of letting Adriane enter Arthur’s bedroom had spiked Arthur’s anger.

Adriane walked into the bedroom and saw Arthur sitting in a wheelchair, facing the huge French window. The sun cast deep shadows behind him.

She pretended nothing had happened and asked, “Mr. Arthur, do you want to have your breakfast now?”

Arthur turned around in his wheelchair and looked at Adriane coldly. Her body went icy cold with dread.

That feeling of suffocation disappeared when Arthur diverted his cold gaze to Yael.

Yael lowered his head and said, “I’ll go and get my punishment, Mr. Arthur.”

Arthur ignored Yael and spoke to Adriane instead, “Don’t call me Mr. Arthur.”

Yael did not lift his head. He thought Arthur was talking to him. Without hesitating, he knelt and begged, “Mr. Arthur, please don’t fire me. I won’t let Mrs. Jenkins come in again without your permission!”

Seeing that Arthur had no intention of explaining, Adriane spoke out awkwardly, “You don’t need to kneel. He was talking to me just now.”
