(Chapter song ‘Building Lights’ by The Weekend)

EZRA

‘We need to escape.’

‘We can’t escape. We need him.’

‘Wake up.’

‘Am I sleeping?’

‘Yes. Wake up! Now!’

‘I don’t want to.’

‘Wake up!!’

Large teeth swallow me as I scream in my mind.

I realized I was screaming outside as it died down and I was surrounded by beeping and in a strange bed.

I look at myself. My hands and the clothes. I look to a glass wall with people on the other side.

“Ollie.” I say as I rip the stuff stuck all over me off. I slide out of bed and duck down beside it.

The people behind the glass have their backs to me.

I look around the small room. There’s machines all over and the walls are cold. It smells weird and the I notice the people outside have weapons.

“What is this place?” I mutter.

‘We have to fight.’

“They’ll kill us.” I whisper.

‘If you want the librarian, you have to fight.’

“Librarian?” I cinch my brows.

My eyes glow and an image of Michael comes to mind. ‘Find the library. Bring me the librarian.’ It wasn’t an order given to me, but to the other rogues. I can feel they’re memories.

‘The books will have answers to us.’

“You think?” I watch the people behind the glass. They’re big and in black. Several walk back and forth across the glass. I duck further and hide.

‘Yes. The cloaked man’s vault. The maker of the juice. We must replace it. We must fight. Now!’

I feel her rise and my teeth enlarge. My claws come out as I stand and walk to the door.

I grab the handle and throw it open.

“What the…” The guard grabs for his weapon and I reach out. I grab his shirt, pull him into the room and snap his neck. I throw his body out to the hall. He hits the wall and his limp body thuds on the floor.

“What the fuck?!”

The others arm themselves as I step slowly out of the room in the short, blue shirt with my head lowered and my glare locked on all of them.

I stop and face them.

‘Kill them.’

“Stand down! We will shoot!” One shouts as he aims his weapon.

“No.” I growl darkly.

I leap into the air, dig my claws into the ceiling, swing my feet and kick the one in front in the chest. His body crashes through the glass wall and hits the bed, shoving it across the floor. Glass shards fly across the hall and floor.

I fall back down and a guard tries to shoot. I grab his arm twist it and he screams. I shove my palm into his chin, wrap his arm around and fire at the guards running at me. Two go down with leg shots and I drop the guard to the floor.

More show up and I run straight into them. I backhand one and break another’s arm. I smash his gun into his kneecap, drive the but into the stomach of another and uppercut a third with the weapon and they all go down.

I jump to the ceiling as others try to take me down. I crawl across the ceiling over them and fall down with open jaws. I grab a guards head and squeeze it in my hands. He screams as I bite into his neck while he crumples to the floor.

I get hit in the back and whip my head to the guard who dared. My blood covered canines grow longer and he backs up. With a frightening growl, I jump on him and swipe my claws across his chest. His uniform tears and blood pours out.

“HEY!”

I look behind me and five more guards round the corner. I roar loud and take off down the hall. The bullets fly by me as I jump onto the ceiling. I swing my legs up into an air vent.

As I crawl around, I pant as I figure out what I should do now. I want Ollie and out of here.

‘We need out.’

“Agreed.” I growl low.

‘Leave this place.’

I break another vent and jump down onto a desk.

I hop down and run to the door. I open it and peek out. I see people in the halls curious about what’s happening and more guards running this way.

‘Run.’

I throw the door open and take off.

“STOP RIGHT THERE!”

As I run past people, I throw them behind me with them trying to replace balance and yelping out screams.

I hear the guards boots hitting the floor as I run. Their uniform noises fill my ears and I fill with fear that I cannot escape to replace Ollie.

‘Jump!’

“Jump? Jump where?!” I turn a corner, look behind me quickly and the men are almost on top of me.

‘There.’

I see a window, pull my wolf power and make a leap for it.

“STOP!”

Without hesitation, I grab the ceiling, swing my feet to the widow and the glass shatters. I jump out the window and fall four stories. I land on my feet and one hand.

“FREEZE!”

I look back, growl. Dirt flies up in columns as they shoot at me and miss.

‘MOVE!’

I jump forward, explode out of my shirt and my wolf takes over.

She runs for the chain link fence and jumps as high as she can, clearing the 8 foot metal with barbed wire top.

I feel it. I know.

‘That way! Hurry! Don’t stop!’ I say to her. ‘Just go!’

The sounds of alarms are faintly heard as the woods absorb us.

‘No…Don’t turn…Keep this way!’

She barks and bears down.

We ran with no regard for food. I felt like a machine with an inputted direction. I was being called in the fog.

I ran into the night. The moon looked strange or maybe I’ve never seen the moon before. It doesn’t look the same. It sparkles a light blue and makes me feel almost special. But the moon isn’t our mission.

‘We need it.’

‘We need to replace it.’

‘Sniff a dead dog then we will get back to the way.’

‘Agreed.’

I trot through the woods with my nose on the hunt. This shouldn’t be hard since they come this way because of Michael and the hooded man. They want the hooded man’s library and something in it. There’s secrets in there that can help me. I don’t want to fight me anymore. She thinks we're going away. I have a different plan. I’ll just use her help until I can replace the answers.

It was almost dawn when we tracked a dead dog to a cave.

I wasted no time.

‘Kill him.’

I ran in and he was in wolf form. I swiftly attacked and spread his insides all over the cave. His blood drips from the rocky ceiling as I shift and pick up his chain with a vial of Croak on it. I look through his things for a needle and don’t replace one.

‘Drink.’

“Will that work?” I pull the cap and lift the vial of red liquid to my lips.

‘Don’t kill us.’

I tip back a small mouthful and swallow.

My chest and stomach feel warm. A fire ignites. I hold onto it and cringe in pain. Leaning on the wall, my body heats and I feel it absorb into my bloodstream. My eyes glow so red, the cave lights up. I look at my body and my veins turn red all over.

My mind turns red and my wolf centers. She becomes bigger and more dangerous. Her chest puffs and she roars in my head. She thrashes and I close my eyes.

She claws and snarls and I ball my fists. The pain and agony build and Michael’s face appears.

My eyes open and cave almost shimmers with red, blue, and gold. The red targets Michael’s face and I roar out a punch into the rock wall. The rock smashes and my arm doesn’t move.

I draw back and my shoulders heave. The entrance to the cave shakes in my vision then it becomes clear. More clear. Water clear.

I stand, look around the dark and sniff.

‘Target.’

I smirk. “Yes.”

I put the chain around my neck and shift. My wolf feels faster, larger, stronger. We don’t feel as dirty dead as we did before.

I can smell him. I can taste him. I can feel him.

This is so confusing, but feels like he makes more sense.

‘We run.’

‘Run to him.’

‘He can see.’

‘We can be.’

This filled my chest with an excitement that I lost. I’m getting things back. I’m feeling more. My paws are the fastest now to Oliver. He'll be happy for me. He’ll see the Alpha I am. She won’t have the control over me. She won’t hurt me. I am strong. I’m a live dog.

****

We ran another night and when the trees disappeared, we follow. Follow the sand.

The red sun grows large beyond the mountains and my heart fills with the red sand.

My wolf pants as our paws throw dust behind us. My stomach growls, but it’s not food that drives me. It’s him. His fire. I need it.

When we get to the rocks, I jump, extend my claws and climb. As I climb, I see the machines on the top. I keep an eye on them as I get closer.

Once I get close, I see the machine breath life.

‘WATCH!’

I jump along the wall as the machine grows. It turns and looks at me. My wolf watches behind her.

A loud siren blares.

‘We hide.’

‘Hide how?’

‘Run.’

The machine shoots and I dodge the fire. I zigzag through the rocks and get closer to the top as we come around another machine. That machine is shot and breaks apart.

‘Hide now!’

My eyes glow blue and the world goes blue.

‘Good. Move.’

I walk out from the dead machine and the live machine move slow. It stopped firing.

‘You hide.’

I look down at my paw and I see rock.

‘Where?’

‘Find him.’

The machine shrinks and goes back to sleep.

The sirens blare and I see guards approach the rock at the bottom.

“LOCATION!”

“No visual!”

“Who’s got eyes on it?”

I feel my fur stand on end as they aim their weapons at the rocks. My claws extend and grip the stone ledge I’m on just above their heads.

‘Kill them.’

‘No.’

I jump from my ledge and run through them like a train. My claws slash uniforms and blood spills as they get pushed out of the way like bowling pins. I hit the road. Yells and screams come from behind me as I enter the towering city.

‘Find cover.’

I run though the streets and around people. When I enter the busy road, I stop just as a car hits my backend. I get pushed down the road and the car swerves. Others crash and I run. I don’t really feel the pain when I gain back my paws. She took it.

She runs down a dark street and when I run past glass, I have to stop. I turn back and stand in front of it.

I see myself, but I see stuff through me. My fur looks different. My eyes look different. I don’t look like a dead dog anymore. I look…different.

‘Find cover for your body.’

My eyes move from the glass to beyond it. There’s clothes in the window. I shift and look to a door.

When I get to it, I grab the handle and turn. It stops, but then I push on it and it moves again. I open the door and walk in. The room is filled with clothes so I replace some.

I put on jeans and shirt. I fix my hair and replace some boots. After, I go out the way I came.

“WHERE IS IT? WHERE DID IT GO?!”

I look to where I came up the dark street and see guards run past. Sirens wail and I stuff my hands in my pockets. Before I get to where the sun is, I see some people walk past. Women. They look…important.

I scan the faces and one in particular triggers my mind.

Flashes of blonde hair and large magic at the big white house. She may look different, but it’s her.

I hug the corner of a brick building and peek around it as they walk down the street.

‘Librarian.’

“I see.” I mutter.

‘Follow.’

“What about…” I pull back.

‘He can wait. Librarian!’

I swallow and step into the street. I follow them and watch with curiosity. I look at their clothes and look at mine. I study their hair and I pick up my hair. Is this what I am or that?

I push that out of my mind and continue to follow. They walk into a very tall building. I stop and look up. It shines in the sun.

I walk to the strange door and watch the people walk around in it.

‘Move.'

I step forward and it’s like I’m pulled in. Once inside, I feel strange. I feel like I’m not supposed to be inside.

‘Kill.’

“Shut up.” I growl.

I walk into the space and my eyes take in everything. All the light from the windows. All the men and women strolling across the wide, shiny floor. The multiple layers that climb high to the glass ceiling.

On the walls, small stores with things in them.

As I walk, I keep a safe distance. I watch from behind a small wall as they walk into a store. They seem to be in there for a dress. Much prettier than the one I have. I see the colors. I feel the colors. I want the colors.

‘Look.’

I redirect my attention down the hall and in my longing for colors, the women walk on. I continue.

I smell food and although I’m very hungry, I don’t want to eat.

They sit and laugh as they eat.

‘Sit. Listen.’

I replace a seat and my wolf uses her hearing.

“Now that you’re the keeper of the secret, I supposed you would be a target.” One says.

“I don’t like that.”

“Deacon is an awesome fighter. They would have to get through a wall of us to get to you.”

‘Exactly. Now that we have control back, security around it will be immense. Azriel and the council won’t let what happened to Cedric happen again.”

Flashes from dead dog minds fill my brain with books, yellow and death. “The library.” I say quietly.

“Now that the Shaman had broken his accord with the Sorcerers, he’s lost all rights to the vault. It’s ours now.”

“So I control it?”

“As long as you hold that key, no one can touch it. So keep it safe.”

I tried to listen for a where, but they didn’t say. Then they said things that I didn’t really understand, but felt.

They talk of special feelings. I watch them as they smile about loves and being…happy. I want that.

I’m lost in the stories of men and my heart beats a little faster.

“I don’t want to freak you guys out, but we’re being stared at.”

I hear this and whip my head straight forward.

“Ripped jeans. Black crop top…”

I look at my jeans and poke at the holes. I flick my shirt.

‘Go. Leave.’

‘But the library…’

‘We replace it later. Now, leave!’

I get up and my Croak falls out of my shirt.

‘Hide it!’

I grab the vial, tuck it back in and leave the area.

“They talked about nice stuff.”

‘We don’t need it.’

“Yes, we do. We need Ollie. I’m replaceing him. He’s here.” I demand.

People look at me with strange faces as I walk out the door to the outside.

I stop and look up and down the street. This place is very big. “He’s here somewhere.”

I turn and walk up the streets. I watch everyone’s faces. Study them. Take them in. Create a bank in my head. Everyone. Like I need them for safe keeping for later.

I walk past a large chain fence. I hear fighting and stop.

Five trucks, full of men in uniforms, leave the big building in a hurry. They drive through the streets to where I entered. They will look forever. A smirk pulls at my lip.

“Deacon!”

I turn back to the field and see the man that was with Oliver in the warehouse.

“Hey. What’s up?”

“You coming here for the Blue Moon ball?”

“Nope. I’m celebrating in Upton. Jenny’s being introduced as my Luna. I want my pack to see her beautiful face.”

I touch my face. “Luna?” I whisper.

“Well, good luck, man. Hope Jenny’s yours!”

“I know she is.”

‘Upton.’

“What?” I’m lost in the thought of Oliver and words I want to hear.

‘We must go.’

“Find the library then replace him.” I say.

‘LOOK OUT!’

I turn and my arm is grabbed.

Dark eyes glare as I’m pulled closer. Fire smells surrounds me. It’s even stronger now and makes me heat.

My eyes widen and a small smile grows. “Ollie.” I breathe.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” His jaw clenches and I feel his anger which makes the heat turn cold.

I swallow and blink as I search for words to answer.
