Chapter 189

Rachel walked home in the dark and resisted the urge to call David Jones.

She turned on her computer and checked the emails from Lucas.

Her fair and slender fingers slid across the mouse and she read ten lines at a glance.

At this moment, Lucas’s video call came. “I told you back then that this kind of man is unreliable, butyou didn’t believe ine! Now that the evidence is in front of you, you have to admit it!”

“People make mistakes sometimes.” Rachel rested her chin on one hand and browsed through theinformation calmly.

Lucas looked at her calm expression and could not help but ask, “No, aren’t you sad at all?”

Rachel raised her eyes and looked at Lucas on the screen. After a moment of silence, she calmly said,“Maybe I don’t have that much feelings for him.”

It was just that he had suddenly appeared at a time when she needed it the most and she hadmistakenly let that gratitude develop into dependence.

After spending so much time together, she had come to treat this dependence as love.

She had once thought that Louis was someone who would never abandon her. However, she had beenunprepared when he did abandon her, catching her off guard.

The moment Louis abandoned her, she even recalled some painful memories from her childhood.

So she couldn’t make peace.

Lucas lit a cigarette and leaned back. He unhurriedly took a puff. After a long while, he asked, “Rae–Rae, do you really think the person you met that night five years ago was Louis?”

In the darkened room, only the cigarette between his fingers was stained with a scarlet light, flickering.

His dark eyes were like a cold lake, and the outline of his exquisite and

tough face revealed an unknown ruthlessness.

Rachel stared at him intently. “What do you mean?”

“Ever since you told me, I’ve investigated in private. I realized that although Louis appeared inYolandais, he didn’t stay long.” Lucas straightened his arm and rested his wrist on the table. Hisslender fingers flicked the cigarette ash. “I suspect that someone used Louis‘ whereabouts to cover itup.”

These words immediately made Rachel’s expression change drastically. Her pupils constricted in shockas she opened her mouth, “Are you sure?”

“After all, so many years have passed. There are too few clues that I can use.” Lucas looked at her.“Rae–Rae, you can replace an opportunity to test it

out.”

Rachel said, “I understand.”

After hanging up, Rachel sat in front of the computer as if her soul had left her body.

Her mind was filled with Lucas‘ words.

If the person that night wasn’t Louis, then who was it?

If the person she had been looking for wasn’t Louis, then the last bit of mercy she had retained for theSmith family would be gone, right?

At this moment, her phone suddenly rang.

She picked up her phone and glanced at it. A faint gentleness appeared in her eyes.

She gently swiped the screen with her fingertip and picked up the call.

David’s exquisite face appeared clearly on the phone screen. “You’ve been waiting for me?”

“Are you done?”

The two of them spoke at the same time. Then, they looked at each other and smiled.

David stared at the face on the screen that he had been thinking about day and night. He carefullyobserved every part of her face, not letting go of even the slightest change. “You look like you havesomething on your mind.”

Hearing this, Rachel was slightly stunned. She raised her hand and touched her face. Then, her lipscurled into a beautiful smile. “No, I’m probably too tired today.”

Upon hearing her words, an imperceptible dark glint flashed across David’s eyes. He said indulgently,“No matter how busy you are with work, you have to take good care of yourself.”

“Got it.” Rachel looked at his face.

The depths of his eyes seemed to be filled with endless affection. Even if it was just a glance, he couldeasily lock her in.

She pursed her lips. “How…long more will it be before you return?”
