Chapter 231 An Outsider
Louis suddenly sat up. When he saw Old Mr. Smith walking over on crutches, he quickly stood up andnodded slightly to greet him. “Grandpa.”
Old Mr. Smith often yelled at Mrs. Smith recently. Though she was full of resentment, Mrs. Smith didnot dare to show it on her face. She put on a respectful look and call out, “Old Mr. Smith.”
“Tell me how you negotiated with Rachel.” Old Mr. Smith stared at Louis, his sharp eyes full of scrutiny.“As long as she’s willing to forgive us, we can hold a press conference to help her clarify it.”
When Mrs. Smith heard this, she immediately raised her head and said angrily, “Old Mr. Smith, what’swrong with you? She was the one who let us down first. Why should we clarify it for her when she wascaught in scandals? “Besides, if Louis does as you say, it’s like slapping him in the face in front ofeveryone!”
“Shut up!” Old Mr. Smith hit the floor hard with his walking stick.
Hearing the noise, Mrs. Smith felt like the stick was hitting her heart and she immediately fell silent.
“Why would my son marry an ungrateful woman like you? If it weren’t for Rachel’s advice, there’s noway the Smith family could get out of the crisis and rise again. Everything you have now is earned byRachel! You wear fancy clothes and luxurious jewelry. You do nothing every day except for drinkingcoffee and playing cards. How can you live such a comfortable life without her?
“If you hadn’t sowed discord between Louis and Rachel back then, they would have married a longtime ago. There wouldn’t have been so much trouble! Don’t you feel ashamed to accuse her of lettingus down?”
Old Mr. Smith retired years ago because of his illness. After handing the company over to Louis, hehad been living in his own small villa to enjoy his retirement life. He rarely asked about the company’sbusiness and had never interfered with his family’s affairs.
He had been tough when he was young. But now, everyone thought his temper had softened and hecared about nothing other than his health.
It turned out that they were wrong. When Old Mr. Smith lost his temper, they
were so frightened that they did not dare to make a sound.
“Grandpa, I should be blamed for letting Rachel down. I already realized my mistakes. But no matterwhat I said, she refused to forgive me.” Louis sighed faintly and told Old Mr. Smith about hisconversation with Rachel.
Upon hearing this, Old Mr. Smith’s face turned solemn. “Did she really say that?”
Louis nodded seriously. “Yes.”
Mrs. Smith, who had been struggling to hold back her anger roared, “How dare Rachel say that? Didshe think that the Smith family was still as down and out as three years ago? Why did you apologize toher? It was unnecessary to do so! Someone kidnapped her and took those photos. She deserved it! Awoman like her should…”
“What are you talking about?” Old Mr. Smith interrupted her coldly.
He looked at Mrs. Smith, his sharp eyes darting fire.
When Mrs. Smith met his gaze, she hurriedly lowered her head and forced back the rest words.
“As an elder, how could you say something like that?”
Mrs. Smith was not convinced, and she thought Old Mr. Smith was not reasonable at all. “If she doesn’twant the others to gossip about her, she shouldn’t have done such a thing. Why should we cover upher dirty laundry?” Rachel was just an outsider to them. Mrs. Smith did not understand why Old Mr.Smith would put her first instead of the Smith family when something happened.
“Fortunately, she took the initiative to break up with Louis. Otherwise, Louis would have been laughedat by others! Once words get out, the Smith family will become a standing joke with everyone!”
“Shut up!” Old Mr. Smith shouted angrily again. “I’m not dead yet. An outsider like you don’t have theright to tell what the Smith family should do!”
The word “outsider” was like a knife stabbing into Mrs. Smith’s heart.
