Chapter 513
“You’ve always said that this marriage is not suitable for me. You’ve repeatedly asked me to break offthe engagement, but you owe me an explanation on this.” Rachel had always felt that Arthur wasparticularly against her and David’s marriage.
Since he was so against it, why didn’t he stop her mother from getting engaged back then?
Arthur became very enraged and bitter after seeing Rachel’s obstinacy.
If it was Lucas, Arthur would have beaten him to death if he was like this! He rubbed the watch in hishand in frustration. After pondering for a long time, he spoke again. “Let’s put other matters aside first.Once your relationship with David is exposed, those who are enemies with David will start to targetyou! It’s easy to fend off an open attack, but you can never avoid an unexpected attack. Can youguarantee that you are able to come out unscathed?
“Perhaps David can protect you for a while, but there will be times when he is careless. If that happens,it will be too late for regrets!”
As one basked in the glory of unrivaled honor and the adoration of the masses, the inevitable tide ofopposition would soon follow suit.
The existence of Rachel was precisely the bargaining chip these people would use to threaten David.
Once David’s enemies found out about Rachel’s existence, they would definitely do everything theycould to get their hands on Rachel.
However, Rachel had already thought of what Arthur said.
She had also convinced herself to let go, to attempt to settle for the mundane existence of a regularperson, and to replace contentment in that.
Yet it was her own selfishness that led her to take the risk.
She’d given him her everything in the hopes that he’d settle down and spend the rest of his life with her.
Rachel rubbed the edge of the cup with her fingertips and said, “But I might not be his weakness.”
David might not be able to keep harm at bay for her at all times, but she would never allow herself to bedominated.
She did not need David or the Johnson family as her support. She was the most trustworthy of all.
As Arthur saw Rachel’s intransigence, he felt nothing but frustration.
He sighed deeply. “Forget it, forget it! I can’t change your decision. I really hope that you can keep yourcool and not do anything irrational when you have to deal with this situation.”
“Got it, grandpa,” Rachel replied.
After leaving Arthur’s room, Rachel returned to her room.
She entered the room and saw Lucas sitting on the sofa.
“Come here and sign this,” Lucas handed a document to Rachel.
Rachel took it and asked casually, “What is it?”
Lucas lit a cigarette and answered, “The shares of my company.”
His tone was too slack and careless to suggest he was talking about anything of significance. Rather, itseemed like he was inquiring as to whether or not she had
eaten.
“Why did you give me this for no reason?” Rachel stared at him with a raised brow. The transfer letterwas tossed on the table before she turned and headed to her room. “Are you feeling uneasy becauseyou’ve accepted David’s privileges behind my back?”
“What do you mean by feeling uneasy? It’s as if I’ve done something wrong to you,” Lucas muttered.
He admitted that he was indeed tempted by David this time.
However, what else could he do? After all, the other party had offered the entire research anddevelopment team.
If David had been slightly stingy, Lucas wouldn’t have pulled such a move for the sake of the moneyand lost the Johnson family’s face.
Rachel walked to him with the first aid kit in her hand, demanding, “Take off your shirt.”
“It’s just a small injury…”
“Take it off,” Rachel interrupted him coldly.
Lucas was most afraid of Rachel’s cold expression. Putting down the wine glass, he dutifully removedhis shirt as instructed.
His back was covered with what looked like vicious scars, and his flesh and skin seemed like beingripped apart.
This time, Arthur was especially brutal.
