Rachel frowned imperceptibly in anticipation of what he had to say.

She did not know Landon well. At most, she had met him a few times when she was with David. Theyhad no interaction in private whatsoever. However, she knew that Landon and Jimmy were buddies

who had risked their lives with David. Therefore, she was sincere with both men.

Rachel was used to Jimmy and Landon bickering and laughing in social settings. As such, hisunexpected tone now weighed her down inexplicably.

As she pondered, Landon said, “Do you know why David chose to announce your relationship?”

He paused for a moment before continuing. Because he knows you don’t want to hide behind him andbe protected. Hence he gave you the status to stand alongside him. He wants to tell everyone that youbelong to him. His action may seem meaningless to you, but to us, it’s equivalent to revealing hisweakness publicly.

“Many people have wanted his life behind his back all these years. However, they think twice becauseof his status and influence in the underworld. Now that he has announced your relationship, they willtarget you instead. I do not doubt that you’re a capable woman, but please stay out of harm’s way sothat he won’t go crazy again.”

Rachel’s brows furrowed. “Crazy?” she said hesitantly.

Crazy was an adjective most people used to ridicule a person’s state of mind. However, judging fromLandon’s severe tone, it sounded deeper than that.

Landon stared at her intently for a moment before looking away and lowering his eyes. “David is aliving being just like you and me. He will also have emotional breakdowns when the pressure is toooverwhelming. He lost his mind once many years ago but stabilized after a treatment period. I thoughthe wouldn’t lose control of his emotions again until I saw him rush to the abandoned building site withhis men last night.”

Landon and Jimmy knew very well how much Rachel meant to David after all this time.

However, they only saw the tip of the iceberg, a small part of a larger and more complex issue.

Last night, when Landon saw David go to the unfinished building site in a rage, he realized somethingwas wrong.

Landon had been carefully observing Rachel’s expression after he told her about David; he tried to replaceclues from the subtle changes on her face to guess her mind.

However, Rachel seemed calm, as if she had anticipated it. Landon could not read her thoughtsthrough her expressions. Landon was clueless about what Rachel was thinking. He pondered for a longtime and said calmly, “I’m telling you this because I hope you can be mentally prepared. As for leavinghim…”

He paused for a moment and flashed a meaningful smile. “Perhaps you don’t know him well enoughafter all. He won’t let you leave easily after he has chosen you to be the one.”

David was known to be possessive by lus buddies.

He would surely not let go easily of someone he fancied, let alone someone he cared deeply about likeRachel.

David would have to make the first move if Rachel wanted to leave. Otherwise, she could forget aboutescaping from him for

David could not bear to see Rachel hurt because he cared about her.

Rachel was like a rare treasure he was unwilling to let go of or hide. On the other hand, if he put it outfor display, he would be disgusted by others’ coveted gazes. As such, he repeatedly fell into his ownweb of conflicts.

Rachel twitched her lips. “No matter what, I thank you for sharing with me today.”

“There’s no need to thank me,” Landon said. “As his woman, you have a right to know.”

Now that he had done his part and left the decision in Rachel’s hands, he would not interfere anymore.

When Rachel returned to the back garden, David extended his hand to her. “Are you hungry?”

“A little.” She took a deep breath and looked at the barbecue in Jimmy’s hand; she craved some. “Canwe eat now?” she asked. eagerly.

“Yes, of course,” Jimmy replied as he handed the skewers to Rachel. “Try some while they’re hot. I’mnot boasting when I say I’m a professional when it comes to skewers,” he said proudly.

Landon sneered. “Tsk, tsk. You’ve been standing by the oven for too long, bro. It has gone to yourhead!”

As the two bickered away, the outdoor barbecue was elevated to a high point. Everyone enjoyedthemselves eating and chatting.

The meal lasted for a long time. Jimmy, the self-appointed barbecue chef, was exhausted but could notkeep up with the demand for more. As he wiped the sweat off his forehead, he complained, “This isfucking inhumane!”

“I think you’re doing quite well,” Landon scoffed, trying to lift his spirit.

It sounded like a compliment, but Jimmy felt otherwise. It was condescending coming from Landon.
