Chapter 3 Beauty and Talent
“Hey Doc Brooks, now that you’re engaged, how about we celebrate with a meal? You’re treating this time. We’re dying to see what Mr. Harrington looks like. Is he a total heartthrob?”
Amy grinned and replied, “Sure thing! He’s actually coming to pick me up this afternoon, so let’s all grab a bite together.”
Layla was working hard at the hospital, doing all sorts of odd jobs. She shadowed her professors, attended academic discussions, and impressed everyone with her fast learning. skills. Her professors had high hopes for her, and after this year, she’d finally become a full–fledged doctor.
After a meeting, Layla put on her white coat and started her rounds in the hospital wards. As she sat down to write her academic paper, Wesley showed up.
He knocked three times at the door, and since there were only two people in the room, one of them being Layla, he asked, “Is Doctor Brooks around?”
Layla looked up and their eyes met. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away.
Another colleague recognized him and said excitedly, “Doctor Brooks is doing rounds. You’ll replace her in Room 8 of the Cardio–Neuro Surgery Department.”
“I’ll wait for her here.” Wesley walked in, found a chair, and sat down.
His eyes intentionally or unintentionally scanned Layla’s seat. She had her head down, typing away on her keyboard. The words she typed were a mess, constantly deleting and retyping.
No one knew what she was up to, but it was clear she was busy.
The other colleague received a call and left the office with some documents, leaving only two people behind.
For a while, the only sound in the room was the keyboard clicking.
After some time, Layla suddenly stood up and pretended not to notice Wesley as she walked past him.
But he grabbed her wrist before she could leave.
Layla froze in place. She didn’t turn around, but she could feel his intense gaze on her.
After a few seconds, he let go of her hand, and Layla hurriedly left the room.
She went to the restroom, splashed water on her face, and held onto the sink’s edges with trembling fingers.
“I can’t believe Mr. Harrington looks even better in person than in the photos. He and Doctor Brooks are a perfect match.”
“Yeah, Doctor Brooks is one lucky lady…”
When Layla returned to the department, Amy had already come back. A crowd of curious colleagues had gathered around. Amy was holding onto Wesley’s arm, introducing him to everyone.
They looked like the perfect couple, a match made in heaven.
“Wesley, since everyone’s here, let’s treat my colleagues to a meal.”
Wesley had his hands in his pockets, and he nodded slightly, speaking softly. “Sure;”
Cheers erupted in the office. Everyone gathered around Layla, putting their arms around her shoulder. One of them asked with a grin, “Layla, you coming too?”
Layla looked down, organizing her desk. “I think I’ll sit this one out. I’ve got something to take care of tonight.”
“What’s up? Got a hot date? Didn’t know you had a boyfriend,” another colleague teased.
“Yeah, come on! Don’t be a loner.”
“It’s not every day that Doc Brooks treats us. Show some appreciation.”
They all tried to convince her, but Layla wasn’t particularly close to her colleagues. She usually kept to herself.
“Exactly. Don’t make it seem like everyone’s excluding you.”
Amy joined in too. “Unless it’s something super important, come on. You’ve been here for a while now, and you missed the last department outing too.”
Layla’s breathing became unsteady. The last time her colleagues went on an outing, she missed it cuz she was with Wesley then…
