Chapter 20
“So, who are you?” Vanessa felt Tracy’s unfriendliness. She raised her eyelids slightly as she locked eyes with Tracy.
“I am William’s girlfriend. We have been together for six years. Not only are we well–matched, but our relationship has always been sweet. Ms. Sanchez, I think you are smart. Forced relationships are not fulfilling, and a marriage without love can’t last. This time, he got emotional and married a stranger because he cared about me so much…”
Vanessa interrupted her, saying, “William and I are already married. Do you think it’s appropriate to come and tell me all
this now?”
Vanessa rarely interrupted others, but the disdainful and contemptuous look in Tracy’s eyes made her uncomfortable. Moreover, she learned from William that this woman never wanted to marry him in the first place.
It was Tracy who didn’t want to marry before. Now, after William was married, she suddenly wanted to claim him back. Wasn’t this a typical case of a twisted personality, where she didn’t cherish what she had until she lost it?
Seeing that Vanessa was difficult to deal with. Tracy wasn’t annoyed. She smiled and said, “So, as I said, name your conditions. How about 60 thousand dollars? They can receive treatment with the money, whether it’s your father or your brother.”
When Tracy returned to her home country, she asked Ben about Vanessa’s situation. She knew that Vanessa’s family was financially struggling and that Vanessa’s father and brother had health issues. It was difficult for Vanessa to make ends meet., And it would take Vanessa at least ten years to save up to 60 thousand dollars.
“Marriage is not a business transaction. Goodbye.” Vanessa stood up and left.
Although her relationship with William was not deep, they were legally married after obtaining the marriage certificate. From the moment they got married, Vanessa committed herself to working hard on maintaining her marriage.
She owed William a favor.
If William were to say to her, “Vanessa, let’s get a divorce. I regret it, she would agree.
However, when William’s ex–girlfriend came to see her, she didn’t accept it.
“Ms. Sanchez, he won’t love you, Tracy shouted as Vanessa left.
“That’s our own business.” Vanessa turned and said before leaving directly.
Tracy shouted again. “Ms. Sanchez!”
“Do you have something else to say?” Vanessa turned to look at Tracy.
“Hasn’t he taken you to meet his family yet?” Tracy asked.
Tracy sat while Vanessa stood. The look in Tracy’s eyes was filled with contempt.
Tracy raised her chin, exuding a sense of superiority from within. She said, “Ms. Sanchez, you’re a smart person. You should. understand why he didn’t introduce you to his family even after marriage. By the way, six years ago, he pursued me. As we had just started our relationship, he couldn’t wait to introduce me to his family…”
“I’m quite busy. I don’t have time to listen to your past. Goodbye.” Vanessa reminded Tracy that no matter how good their relationship was in the past, it was all in the past now.
Tracy chuckled and said, “Ms. Sanchez, if you figure it out, feel free to call that last number anytime. I’ll keep the 60 thousand dollars for you.”
She believed that if Vanessa had any ounce of intelligence, she would choose the money.
Vanessa didn’t say anything further and left the café directly.
She walked along the road. She was reaching the zebra crossing just as the trallic light turned green. She prepared to cross
the street.
At that moment, her phone started ringing.
It was a call from William.
She retracted her leg, which was about to step forward. And then she answered the call. She said, “Hello.”
Suddenly, someone screamed.
The crowd was getting noisy.
A car wildly drove past in front of Vanessa. It hit a woman and caused her to emit a scream. Immediately after, the sound of the car’s emergency brakes followed.
Vanessa felt a gust of wind pass by. And she instinctively lifted her gaze to look over, only to see a horrifying pool of blood.
Chapter 20
The woman lay on the ground. Her body twitched once. And then she became still.
Blood continued to gush out frantically from beneath the woman’s head.
The driver got out of the car to check on the woman.
Vanessa was utterly shocked.
If Vanessa hadn’t stepped back to answer the phone just now, it would be her lying in a pool of blood.
“Vanessa? Vanessa!” William’s voice sounded urgent on the phone.
“William…” Vanessa heard the urgency in William’s voice. And tears started streaming down her face.
“Don’t move. I’m coming William heard Vanessa’s voice and let out a sigh of relief.
He had planned to come over and discuss things with Vanessa. Once her father and brother’s condition stabilized, he would replace time to accompany her to meet his parents.
Additionally, there was a business event the day after tomorrow. He wanted her to accompany him.
In the future, his wife would always stand by his side.
He happened to see Vanessa waiting at the traffic lights, so he called her.
“Okay,” Vanessa replied.
She quickly hung up the phone and called for an ambulance.
A few pedestrians by the roadside gathered around, wanting to help perform CPR for the woman.
But they found that the woman was already dead.
They sighed and lamented the unpredictability of life.
Soon, the familiar Chevrolet came into Vanessa’s view.
William parked the car a few meters away and quickly got out, striding over to Vanessa. He immediately reached out and grabbed her shoulder, checking on her condition.
“I’m fine.” Vanessa said with red eyes.
The car accident had a tremendous psychological impact on her. And she still felt shaken, with her heart beating irregularly.
“Good to hear.” William pulled Vanessa into his arms.
Suddenly, Vanessa reached out and hugged William tightly around the waist.
She had been truly terrified just now.
The shock of the woman’s death had left Vanessa trembling with fear.
Just now, Vanessa was thinking about what would happen to her father if she died. What would happen to her brother? Would her newlywed husband, William, be devastated?
“It’s alright now.” Sensing Vanessa’s fear, William reached out and patted her back, pulling her closer once again.
He glanced at the vehicle and the driver responsible for the accident.
It was a pickup truck.
The driver appeared to be in his forties. Logically, an experienced driver like him wouldn’t make such a rookie mistake. Moreover, it wasn’t a sharp bend or an intersection. And it was not a high–accident area.
Squinting slightly, William made a mental note of the license plate number.
“How did you get here?” he asked Vanessa.
“Let’s talk about it when we get back. Vanessa said.
“Okay. Back to the hospital?” William asked.
“Well, Vanessa replied.
William took Vanessa’s arm and walked her to the car. He personally opened the door for her.
Vanessa was about to turn her head to look at the scene of the accident.
William held her head and said, “Don’t look.”
After they got in the car. William took the wheel. He made a U–turn, and they arrived at the hospital soon.
While walking towards the hospital building. Vanessa told William, “Earlier, a headhunter invited me to meet. But when I arrived, it was your ex–girlfriend.”
Chapter 20
Vanessa didn’t intend to accuse Tracy, but she felt clarifying some things with William was necessary.
William narrowed his eyes. He thought inwardly, “Did Tracy cause the car accident? Just as he suspected, how could an accident be on such a pedestrian path?
He asked Vanessa. “What did she say to you?”
Thinking that Tracy might try to sow discord, he added, “Vanessa, I have no connection with her anymore. Tracy and I broke up. And whether it’s now or in the future, we won’t have anything to do with each other.”
After hearing that, Vanessa stopped in her tracks and then looked up at William.
