Blind Sky -
Chapter 7
I pass by the kitchen, grabbing the stack of mail sitting on the countertop. There is a small box addressed to me, which is strange, considering I wasn’t expecting anything. Inside is a silver three dimensional cube shaped device with my name engraved on it. I press the button underneath my name, and the device transforms into a tablet with written words scrolling across the screen one letter at a time.
A message will be delivered to you shortly, and within seconds, the doorbell rings.
“Are you Sky McClair?” The delivery guy questions, poking his head around the door.
“Yes. May I help you?” I snip assessing the gray uniform, his two big ears lurking from underneath his hat.
“Just checking if you were alone.”
“Excuse me,” I hiss none to please by his prying audacity. “Why does that matter to you? That’s none of your business,” cornering him to the side which is easy, I’m taller than him. He’s not more than 5’4.
“No need to get testy… just following orders.”
I skirt my voice back down to a moderate tone because a few neighbors are standing outside chatting by their mailbox.
“What orders?”
He hands me an orange envelope labeled IMPORTANT: CONFIDENTIAL.
I glance at the delivery guy who rocks back and forth, turning around suspiciously in between movements.
“Who gave this to you? Do you know who it’s from?” I probe which makes him clam up even more. He turns around again, taking a step closer.
“Ms. I’m new,” he whispers. I just started last week, cut me some slack. I’m just following orders to deliver the envelope to this address,” taking a step back.
“Listen, I just need proof of identification and I’m on my way.”
“Alright, I’ll be right back.
He coughs loud enough so I can hear. “One more thing,” pointing to the envelope.
I look down and grunt. “What now?”
“I can’t let you take it until I verify your identity.” I shove it into his chest and the unexpected gasp from his mouth proves he is too wimpy to be an attacker. But I still don’t understand why they would give an inexperienced delivery guy an important document like this?
I return with my I.D. and he dissects it for way too long.
“Are you finished,” I growl.
“Sorry have to make sure. This is the first confidential envelope I had to deliver and I want to make sure I follow protocol and do my job right.”
“I understand,” I convey waiting for him to finish.
“Everything looks good,” handing me the envelope.
“Thank you.” I slam the door, feeling irritated heading back to the kitchen.
I peel off the enclosed section, sliding out the single piece of paper.
MISSION: Get into Division 19.
TARGET: Capture Lars. Bring to us alive.
Meet-up Location: Abandoned Warehouse.
Time: Tomorrow 5:30 a.m.
Ever since the attack on my birthday, I contemplated quitting the agency for good, not only for my safety but for my dad’s as well. I know what the desire for revenge feels like, and whoever wanted us gone, will stop at nothing to make sure they achieve that, including going after my dad.
I arrive at Logue’s facility and there is an indistinct haze hovering over the atmosphere. I haven’t had an assignment in a while, so this should be interesting.
I approach the front entrance and a familiar face greets me. “Name,” Bay yells.
“Sky McC….,” but I don’t get to finish saying my name.
“Sky,” he smiles looking at me with a charming grin, his gray eyes still popping vibrantly, though he’s lost some weight.
“Good to see you Bay. Punch anyone in the stomach lately? ”
“Not today,” he says with a smile. “We miss you around here.”
“You’ve slimmed down, suits you.”
“Yeah, doctor’s orders.”
“Well,” I shrug. “Am I on the list?”
He puts the clip board to his side giving me a warm smile showing his freshly whitened teeth.
“Always. Your meeting is in the abandoned warehouse.”
Abandoned warehouse is code for underground, a secret area hidden below LOGUE’S facility much like a cave. 115 steps down steep stairs, three lefts and four rights, I stop at a dark tunnel inhaling the smell of dust and musk.
Gram, Logue’s System Protocol Director turns the corner carrying a lantern signaling me to follow. He’s in great shape for his age, has hair the color of Uncle Ben’s white rice and a neatly trimmed mustache.
“I’m glad you’re here Sky,” he says in an urgent and direct manner.
“I apologize but we’re undergoing some renovations.”
He stops, pointing to the room blocked off, then picks up a brown envelope sitting on a rickety chipped wooden table and hands it to me.
“Sky, this assignment is commissioned by the Chief of Staff for Australian government. Take your time and review the information inside the envelope and burn it.”
He picks up a folding chair placing it in front of a small table, placing the lantern down, laying a box of matches on top.
“I have to attend to some other things, so see yourself out,” he says walking off.
I take a seat reading over the document.
LOGUE SYSTEM PROTOCOL: CLASSIFIED
Agent Assigned: Sky McClair
Target: Lars
Mission: Get into Division 19. We suspect Lars is still somewhere near Australia’s Northern Territory about a 100 mile radius somewhere near Uluru.
Task: Locate and Capture Lars.
Background: Dangerous and Lethal. Several threats made to Australian government and Logue Agency.
I read over the information coming to the conclusion Division 19 will be almost impossible to get into. They are not regulated by Australian Authority, and the only division separate from all the divisions in Australia. Authority and commercial flights aren’t even allowed to travel there, and they have rights to shoot down any unknowns.
I took an ancient history class that discussed the Uluru location. I know Uluru’s location is sacred to the Aborigines who inhibited the area some 10,000 years ago. Uluru also known as Ayers rock is best known for its mammoth sized red sandstone rock formation rising 1,142 feet above ground, elevated 2,851feet above sea level, with an impressive origin dating back to over 600 million years. It’s a colossal exhibit of what should be considered one of Earth’s great wonders burrowed by abundant stories hidden under an outstanding 19,000 ft. beneath the surface.
