After waiting for more than a decade, Marietta had finally heard the news she wanted to hear

most. She froze on the spot, unable to speak.

After a long while, she turned around and said to Caroline in disbelief, “Carrie, I’m not dreaming, am I? I really found my daughter, right?”

“Mom, this is really happening.” Caroline said happily, “You found your daughter!”

“I…” Marietta burst into tears and hugged Caroline “Thank you so much, Carrie! If it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t have been able to confirm it so soon.”

Caroline patted Marietta on the shoulder. She waited until Marietta had calmed down before

saying, “What are you going to do next, Mom? Are you going to tell her the truth?”

Marietta hesitated. “Carrie, have you known Yvonne for long? What kind of person do you think she is? Will she accept the truth if I go to the Hacketts‘ home and tell her right now?”

Marietta had asked so many questions in succession that Caroline didn’t know how to answer

them.

“Mom, you shouldn’t be impatient. You should think about this carefully and try to tell her the truth in a way that doesn’t hurt her.”

Marietta nodded. “Okay, I’ll be calm. I’ll take my time.”

Although she said so, she couldn’t take her time at all. Yvonne was the daughter she hadn’t seen for over a decade. Marietta felt a wave of pain in her chest at that thought.

Caroline went home after sending Marietta back. After being up and about for an entire day, she was exhausted when she returned home. She was currently nestled in Kirk’s arms, about to fall

asleep.

“It’s great that she found her daughter.” Caroline nuzzled into Kirk’s chest, feeling an emptiness in

her chest.

She was happy for Marietta, but she felt sad when she thought she would soon lose her maternal

love

Marietta’s love for her was unconditional and unrequited. Her selflessness made Caroline believe she could maybe be a good mother as well.

Kirk hugged Caroline and softly caressed her waist with one hand. “Don’t worry, darling. I’ll. always be by your side.”

: Caroline closed her eyes and hummed softly at his words. The next moment, Kirk turned her over

Caroline’s sleepiness disappeared with his actions “Kirk…”

Kirk’s hands were already wandering around her body, and she could feel their heat. Her heart

trembled at his touch, and her voice became soft. “W–Wait…”

Kirk bit Caroline’s lips. When his breath hit her red cheeks, her confusion turned into desire. They made love until midnight, and Caroline finally fell asleep, unable to stay awake anymore.

Then, in the later hours of the night, Caroline felt a chill on her back. She opened her eyes in fright and saw Jude standing at the bedside. He stood so close that Caroline could see the hatred in his eyes.

“Oh, Carrie. I can’t believe you. I loved you so much and treated you like my granddaughter.

“I even died for you, and this is how you repay me? You’re acting so lovey–dovey with your husband that you forgot about me.”

“G–grandpa, it’s not like that… Listen to me…”

“Shut it. I don’t want to hear your excuses, Carrie. The facts are right before me. You’re with your husband now.

“But have you ever thought about how I felt? Every day, I have to see you and your husband being affectionate from the afterlife. Carrie, I’m so disappointed in you.”

“Grandpa…”

“Caroline, if you still have a heart, you should get together with Eddy. Otherwise, I won’t be able to rest in peace.”

As Jude spoke, he rolled his eyes behind his head, and his pupils fell to the ground. Caroline was so frightened by the sight that she sat up from the bed with a scream.

Then, she realized she had had another nightmare.

“Darling…”
