Chapter 28

Anastasia smiled. I will be right behind you.

Damien followed Alan down the hallway until they reached the open restaurant. The piano at the center of the room was unmanned. If his son was anything like him, he was going to bang the shit out of that piano. In front of all the patrons.

Uh Alan_

I am weawy gooood. Momma says so.” Alan grinned as he struggled to open the lid. It was at that moment Damien melted and helped him take the lid up. He watched as Alan sat down on the bench and began to tap on the keys. He held them down well and put his ear close. Damien watched the child with rapt fascination.

After doing this to several keys, Alan began to put sounds together. Damien listened to him for twenty minutes while he kept adding notes. There was no song, but the notes fit together beautifully. The way that kid caressed the keys made Damien’s chest ache. If he had never gotten the genetic proof that Alan was mine, this alone would have secured his belief.

Actually, there was nothing good about how Alan played. He was a child who was excited, but through the rosetinted glasses of a father, Alan seemed like a maestro.

This is his favorite thing to do,Ana’s soft voice startled Damien. He begs to play on the phone.”

Damien turned to face him and Anastasia finally met his eyes.

I used to replace every piano I could, too,” Damien whispered.

I know.Ana smiled. Wikipedia told me. I love watching him. He sits and plays for hours when he can. He is an easy kid, he doesn’t even bother me with food, but when he is playing on the phone.. he seems like a little adult.

Damien continued to watch him. Alan turned and looked up at him for the briefest of moments before returning his attention back to the piano. Damien barely noticed the fact that he had begun to smile.

Damien watched as Anastasia settled herself on a nearby seat, looking completely in awe of her child. Their child. There were no other sounds in the room until Alan started to yawn. Anastasia glanced over at Damien, looking apologetic, and then stood up and walked in his direction.

Alan, she called. It’s time to go home, baby.

I don’t wanna goooooo!Alan complained.

It’s time to take your afternoon nap. Do you want Grandma to be alone and sad at home?

Alan wrinkled his small nose and scowled. Despite it, he didn’t argue. He slipped off the stool and walked over. Damien was sure Alan was headed for his mother, but he didn’t. Alan stopped in front of Damien and slipped his hand into his father’s yet again.

Without a word, Alan led him back to the private room. Wynne and James were the only ones left, and although Damien could see James trying to suppress a smile at the sight, Wynne didn’t even try.

She grinned proudly. Damien didn’t know how to react to all of it. He was a little uncomfortable, but not as much as he thought he would be. It wasunexpected.

You heard him play the piano?Wynne asked.

Yes.Damien nodded. Alan let go of his hand and walked in front.

Wynne shot a look at her husband which Damien couldn’t decipher. Suddenly, Alan stopped walking and turned around, bumping into Damien’s leg. He stumbled backward, not from the force but from surprise, and straight into Ana.

He felt her falling. Damien took a giant step back to brace himself and wrapped his hands around her waist before she could

hit the floor.

Chapter 28

Christ!she cried.

“I’m sorry,Damien said, helping her up. He let his arm linger around her waist without realizing it.

Thank you, Damien, she mumbled, pulling away from him. Damien felt his face heat up in embarrassment. He didn’t know why he held on… he just did.

He turned to Alan to replace him looking sheepish.

Sowy, Boss,” he apologized.

It’s alright, buddy.Damien said, touching the top of his head. Call me Damien, okay?he said. When he looked up he found James had an eyebrow raised at the exchange.

What?Damien asked, annoyed.

Nothing.” he responded with a shrug.

Alan and I need to get home.Ana spoke up. He is really sleepy.

I’m nah sweepy,Alan whined through another yawn.

Ana shook her head. Of course not. Then she turned to Wynne. I’ll head out now.

Wynne nodded.

Ana glanced at him and caught him staring. Her eyes quickly darted away.

Baby, why don’t you say goodbye to everyone real quick?Ana suggested. Alan tore away from his mother as she gathered. their things. The kid was fast. Ana spoke quictly to Wynne.

He’s something else, isn’t he?James asked.

Damien nodded. He had spent over two hours with the child and he seemed like the coolest kid ever. But could Damien know if he was on his best behavior or not?

Alan was his. His son. It didn’t feel like he was. Honestly, even though Damien now knew that he was, and he looked like Damien and he had obviously inherited some of Damien’s traits, he didn’t think that what he felt was very fatherly. What exactly did that feel like?

People say that when a child is born, most parents fall in love instantly. Damien wondered if that was the case for Anastasia. Did she love Alan from the very beginning? Did she resent him?

Damien resented that he didn’t know anything. He hadn’t had the chance to name his son. Did he have the Wright surname? The thought made the anger start to bubble up again, but it disappeared quickly as another realization hit. Ana never intended Damien to know, which meant she never intended to use her family’s name or money for her own benefit.

Damien thought about all the other women it could have been. Every single one of them would have delighted in being able to name their kid Wright.

Damien was startled out of his thoughts by Alan bouncing back into the
