Chapter 36

Ana looked up to replace Damien standing over her. She nodded and instead of sitting in one of the other chairs, he placed himself right next to her, unfolding a blanket and then draping it over her shoulders. She pulled it off her and let go of her knees, letting them dangle before she placed the blanket over both of their laps.

They were silent for a long time. Damien didn’t attempt to say anything, but after a few moments of silence, he shifted closer so that their legs were touching. Ana felt him drape his arms over her shoulder.

Is this okay?he asked quietly.

Yeah.Ana whispered back, taking the moment to clear her throat. After a minute, Damien sighed deeply and she knew he was about to speak.

Do you feel like I abandoned you?he asked. Ana could hear the sadness in his voice.

No,” she answered immediately.

No?he looked confused.

How could you have abandoned me when you didn’t even know?

Damien shook his head, disappointed in himself. I should have come after you then. I should have told you exactly what had happened, why I asked you to go outI should have apologized.”

Damien…. do you know how often I think about what I should and could have done?

When he shook his head, she smiled. Damien absentmindedly rubbed circles on her shoulder as he waited for her response.

Every day. Now, more than ever, but don’t think I didn’t wonder why it happened the way it did.He didn’t respond and continued to rub her shoulder.

Why did you?she asked, suddenly aware of what he was saying.

Why did I what?

Ana swallowed. Cross the line and sleep with me?

Damien turned to face her, staring her directly in the eye. His anguish made him look all the more handsome if that was possible. Youyou said yes.

Ana opened her mouth to ask what he meant but was interrupted when Dianna burst into the backyard.

Anastasia, sweetie, I am so sorry, she apologized as she pulled Ana up. Ana was yanked away from the comforting yet confusing embrace of Damien. The blanket slid off her lap.

Just as she stepped inside, she turned to see Damien hunched over, his hands clutching his hair. As much as she wanted to know what Damien would tell her, she really needed to spend time with Dianna and inculcate a relationship.

The next morning, Ana awoke with a gigantic hangover. Her whole body ached and she could smell the alcohol from everywhere. She stretched her body and rubbed her eyes before attempting to see who was sleeping next to her. When she finally focused, she found Dianna groaning beside her.

From the distance, Damien approached her and handed her a bottle of water. He held onto his mother’s bottle for a second longer before she smiled at him. He smiled back and they had forgiven each other.

If only Ana and Damien’s arguments were so easy to overcome.

Anastasia’s phone chirped and Dianna swiped it up before Ana could.

Anastasia, I think your boyfriend is trying to contact you.

Ana raised a brow, wondering who this boyfriend was. I have no idea who that could be

Okay, let’s stop the conversation there,Damien interrupted. He turned and left the room, making Dianna and Ana shrug.

Wow, I understand he has a hardon for you, Ana, but he doesn’t need to act like a childDianna commented, I know how hard it is to bring a child up alone. You deserve to have a boyfriend on the side. I know I got lucky in that department.

Ana choked on her water. Firstly, Mr. WrightDamienhe doesn’t think of me that way.” And then she paused to think about why Dianna was being so hard on her own son. But why are you so hard on Damien?she asked.

Because I want him to be a responsible adult and not make you or Alan suffer. He should know better because of his childhood.” Anastasia knew a little about it.

After she showered, Ana went down to the kitchen. Dianna was nowhere to be seen, but Damien was sitting on the island, speaking to Alan, who was perched right next to him.

He had a pancake drenched in syrup in front of him.

Good morning, baby, she greeted and kissed Alan’s forehead.

Hi. Momma.

Were you a good boy last night?

Alan nodded enthusiastically and shoved a piece of pancake into his mouth. Ana glanced at Damien and found he was still ignoring her. He sipped on his coffee and pretended to read a financial newspaper.

Are you okay?she questioned.

I’m fine,” he snapped. Ana was taken aback.

Obviously, you are not fine. Can we talk for a minute?

I said I am fine.

Ana wrapped her fingers around his elbow and tugged on him. Damien?she called. He looked down at her fingers and then at her face. Ana glanced in Alan’s direction, hoping he didn’t notice the tension.

Damien huffed and slid off the stool. When they got into the other room, he shrugged his hand out of her hold.

Okay, what is the matter with you?She used the same tone she did for Alan when he was throwing a temper tantrum.

Anastasia, you didn’t need to drag me out to answer that question.

I did because you are being an asshole. She paused. I don’t understand what I did to make you upset.”

You never understand, Anastasia. If you paid more attention to the people around you, you would realize what they are trying to tell you.”

She gasped, her mouth falling open.

Just forget I said anything, okay? It’s obviously not worth it

Damien walked out, leaving Anastasia bailled. She had no idea what he was talking about. Why did he get upset so suddenly? Surely it couldn’t be because they couldn’t finish their conversation the night before. His mother had pulled her away! It wasn’t her fault.
