Caesar, the chief doctor of the silver pack was checking on his patient with a painfully furrowed brow while uttering mute curses from time to time.

-How is he?” Hades stood at a distance somewhat anxiously with no news for quite some time.

-Not now alpha, let me finish my work,” he blurted more sharply than he meant to, throwing away his pent up anger, “Please leave,” he said.

Hades just nodded and walked out of the room to replace the bitter face of Nicolas and Liam who despite the bandages on his body had insisted on being there.

He wasn’t bothered by Caesar’s tone. The wolf was almost 300 years older than him, he had even helped bring him into this world and he knew that for him to react in such a way, the situation was beyond his understanding. He growled inwardly, feeling the rage slowly creep through his being.

He still remembered the feel of the bones on the woman’s skin as he carried her in his arms, her ragged breathing, barely seeing her face under the matted, messy hair. Seeing the sheet stain, in patches, red almost unnerved him. Not even in his most violent outbursts could he, or any of his pack, lay a finger on a woman like that. The last wolf who had tried had lost his right claw.

-How is he,” Nicolas snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked uneasy, ready to enter the room at any moment.

-We have to wait for César to finish treating her, he never gives a prognosis until he’s sure,” he said.

Caesar, the head doctor of the silver pack checked his patient with a painfully furrowed brow as he uttered mute curses from time to time.

The youngest trembled with helplessness.

-You’ll have to wait puppy, I trust him with my life. In your hands, his mother will be fine.

Nicholas didn’t seem to be reassured by that, when he had heard about the deal his brothers had made he had almost exploded with indignation. He couldn’t remember the words he’d said, but Liam had had to go in and get them out, while Rodrigo had unexpectedly stayed with them. Now he regretted his outburst and wanted to apologise, but first he had to know his mother’s condition to think with a blank mind. The terrified look on his brothers’ faces was a heavy burden of conscience.

The sound of two people running reached them and they looked up to see Alan and Noa coming towards them. They stopped some distance away when they saw Nicolas and lowered their heads. Leoxi followed closely behind them watching their backs, after all they were still the children of the alpha of another pack, specifically, an enemy one, and though things had changed and the merger was near, some wolves might not agree with their presence in the main manor.

Hades stepped away from the door and approached them, seeing the familiar atmosphere so tense.

-Our mother,” Alan asked impatiently.

She’s fine, the doctor is checking her.

-Can we see her,” Noa looked on the verge of tears.

-Not at the moment, go back to the room, when we know her condition you will be told,” she didn’t want them to be there when the doctor spoke, she knew that the results of her treatment would not be pleasant and these boys were not prepared.

-But…” they protested until Hades raised a hand, silencing them.

-Nicolas,” he called in an authoritative voice, “Go with them and while you’re at it,” he noticed the wolf grow uncomfortable, “I don’t like unnecessary conflict in my pack.

The youngest one assisted and passed by his brothers who then followed him at a distance, they understood their brother’s reaction, they only hoped he wouldn’t shout at them again, it was the first time he had done it and they didn’t want that episode to be repeated in the future.

Almost an hour later Cesar opened the door and let the alpha in, followed by his twin brother and Liam.

All three stifled an exclamation as they saw her on the bed. The grime on her body had been wiped away leaving her discoloured skin where the pale veins were even visible. Bones marked on her cheekbones, collarbone, hands and who knows where else. Lips chapped to the point of pain and her once dark hair was streaked with multiple platinum strands.

The doctor had bandaged part of her arms where formerly infested wounds decorated the skin, just as a white cloth rested over her eyes.

-I’m afraid to say that this she-wolf is on the verge of death.
