One of the guards rushed into the cell with an exasperated expression on his face.

-Alpha, Commander, the wolves, the wolves, the wolves,” he struggled to articulate, “all of a sudden they froze, their eyes changed colour and they became unconscious.

Hades looked at his brother who was still in shock. In his arms Nebraska could barely move, she had exhausted the last bit of energy she had left and would soon be accompanying her companions to a well-deserved sleep, but she didn’t want to. He shook his head in an attempt to wake himself up.

The alpha sensed the movement and turned his attention to him.

-Later I want you to explain in detail what you did, now rest,” he brushed back the strands of hair that fell over her face.

She denied.

-I won’t do it,” her eyes closed and then she opened them again with force.

Hades understood, and the way her little body began to tremble was the sign that the panic of being left adrift at the mercy of strangers and inside a cell was beginning to take hold of her. I had to get her out of there. She’d endured going into that dungeon and healing her own, after all she’d been through, and yet she hadn’t broken, until now.

-Leoxi, take care of the rest, I have to get back,” he didn’t look at his brother, but he didn’t need any more words, so many years at his twin’s side was more than enough to read him beyond what was necessary.

Hades slipped a hand under his thighs and carried her, leaving the place as quickly as possible. The thinner air rushed into Nebraska’s lungs and she took a big breath.

-You can relax, I’ll take you to your children,” the wolf walked towards the mansion, pressing her against his chest and trying to diminish her scent, so as not to make her uncomfortable.

-You won’t do anything to them,” she said specifically when she received no answer from him, “To my pack?

Hades whispered.

-Can you worry about yourself a little more? They will be fine, my brother will know what to do with the males so that they integrate properly with the other members, but haven’t you seen yourself,” his tone was a little more brusque, “you have children and responsibilities, if you don’t take care of yourself, you will leave them motherless.

-I know my limits,” his words trailed off into thin air, “I won’t leave them alone this time, I just can’t bear to stand by and do nothing when there’s so much to do.

-I’m the alpha now and everyone is my responsibility, so you don’t have to carry all that burden.

Nebraska was slow to respond and he thought she had fallen asleep.

-Still, don’t be queen, tie my arms and legs, I’ll give up my life and everything I have for the sake of my family, only then I’ll be calm…the…-” She finally fell asleep.

She finally fell asleep.

Hades looked at her pale and still thin face. This she-wolf put everything that was important to her before even her health. He knew that if he continued like this he could lose her, he would have to take drastic measures if she used more force than necessary.

She walked through the door of the mansion and went to the room designated for her. Noa was waiting for her, running around in circles. As she entered, the puppy ran in her direction, but when she realised who it was, she backed away. His face grimaced with concern as he saw his mother in his arms.

-Don’t be alarmed, she fell asleep when she walked too far,” she would not worry the youngest with details beyond his comprehension.

She watched him nod and sit on the edge of the bed beside Nebraska once he had placed her on the mattress and covered her body with the blanket.

-Take care of her,” he shook out the tangle of tousled hair, an action that impressed Noa and she left with her mind still analysing the new developments.

She had to keep that information as safe as possible, if someone with the wrong scruples found out about it, the lives of the few omegas that existed could be in danger or end up for other purposes. He was grateful that those who had witnessed this were trusted wolves of his brother.

He heard his beta walk over to where he was and turned, waiting for him leaning against the wall.

-What’s wrong?

His beta’s posture looked uncomfortable, like something didn’t feel right.

-The Council is aware of the situation, they’ll be here in about 8 days.

Hades clicked his teeth. He had hoped to have more time to place all the members of the new pack in better conditions and finish getting certain matters on track, but there was no more he could do. Going against the flow would be worse.

-Prepare the conditions for their reception, nothing can go wrong.

By the time the day of the Council meeting arrived, Nebraska had gained back much of the lost pounds and his senses had mostly recovered, except for his eyesight which refused to improve. No matter what doses of b***d Hades offered her and the doctor’s medication, nothing brought back the sharpness and focus she needed to do things on her own, there was a constant haze present. She had had to learn to be guided by her hearing and her sense of smell, which had helped her a lot for the moment.

This Layan, always such a stickler for etiquette,” Sara protested, stepping through the doorway in a pair of silver-coloured half-size square heels that matched the long, slinky dress Nebraska was wearing. The high collar and long sleeves were perhaps a little overdone but she didn’t want to show any skin in front of what was considered the law among wolves. Sara had done her bit by choosing a thick fabric decorated with the same texture as the yarn. Simple but elegant at the same time.

The she-wolf had tied her hair up in a bun at the back of her head, leaving only the front strands framing her face, and she was devoid of make-up, because she wasn’t going to a party. On the contrary, her future and that of her pack would be defined that day.

-You must be calm and not get exasperated with any of them, no matter what they say,” Sara kept telling her, “Some may be intransigent, but remember that Hades will be with you.

Nebraska’s mind was blank. In her ten years as queen she had never attended either of the two meetings the Council had forced her to attend. If she did, she was sure she would only be punished and they wouldn’t hear anything she had to say.

The reason for that.

It was forbidden for an omega to lead the pack.
