Layan kept the smile on his face despite the clawed hand squeezing his wrist and the threatening scent of the alpha before him. No one but himself knew the reaction to having something that was his own touched. He found the scene funny. No matter how upset either of them were they couldn’t fight, that would be a fatal crime.

Hades growled, baring his fangs and scowling. He circled Nebraska’s waist and held her as he felt the small body tremble beside him.

-Layan-

-Let go of me,” the red-haired alpha said calmly but with a demanding tone.

-What if I didn’t,” he growled. His face faded, leaving his eyes with a menacing gleam. “You would jeopardise the safety of your pack for a she-wolf? I don’t recognise you.

Another growl in response.

-Oh, I see,” he stepped closer to Hades, “Your zeal is bordering,” he raised his eyebrows and then relaxed with a smile again.

He shook his arm free and took a step away, but not in surrender.

-Let’s talk some other time, when you’re in your true senses,” he turned and began to walk away.

-Don’t go near her again, Layan, I won’t patronise you next time,” Hades told him through tight lips.

The other just continued on his way with his hands in his pockets and ignoring his threat. If they started a fight now, they would be punished by the other members of the Council no matter that Layan was the one leading it, but more him for provoking it by being near their rut where wolves, especially alphas got especially violent. He would have other opportunities.

No one would say no to him and nothing was out of his reach.

Hades gripped Nebraska’s waist tighter as her legs faltered and buckled as she let out all the tension. He held her firmly and kissed her temple.

-Calm, soothing,” he said in a calm voice as he saw her state, omegas were too susceptible to the alphas’ commands or threats and easier to bend, no matter his character, “Breathe deep,” she pressed her face against his shoulder so he could smell her scent. Right now it was stronger than usual but at least it wasn’t hostile like Layan’s.

-Hades,” her voice sounded shaky, “Your zeal…” I know, beautiful.

-I know, beautiful, don’t worry, I won’t be around when it comes, I know you don’t like this part of the males.

She, now more relaxed, managed to keep herself stable although the wolf’s arm kept her clinging to him. Over the days they had been together she had realised that his character could be demanding and very dominant, but at the same time gentle and caring in every way possible.

-Ma,” Alan called after her. His countenance was calmer. Being under Hades’ protection made them feel safe.

-Where is Leoxi? I thought I told him I couldn’t leave them alone.

-Someone came in for an emergency and had to run away,” the pup replied.

The alpha clicked his tongue and finally sighed. His twin had enough responsibilities as it was, and he couldn’t reprimand him for fulfilling them as Pack Commander. He helped Nebraska sit back down and took the place beside him.

-I’ll stay while he’s gone, I don’t want any trouble with Layan again.

Rodrigo got up in turn.

-If you’ll excuse me, I’ll leave.

-Rodrigo,” the alpha’s voice sounded serious with no ability to reply, “Sit down and share with your family.

The wolf looked like he was going to show resistance but he listened but did not speak. Hades knew he was dealing with enough, but isolating himself was not the solution.

Leoxi closed the door to his twin’s room where he was gathering some basic clothing.

-Brother, I… this afternoon…

-I’ve already solved the matter,” he paused to look at him, “but it would have gotten complicated if I hadn’t shown up, you know Layan and his bad habit.

His twin lowered his head, ashamed of what had happened.

-Leoxi, tonight I fall in heat, I’ll seclude myself where I always do,” he approached him and put his hand on his shoulder, “I need you and Siran to take care of the herd this time, and take good care of my future wife. Don’t fail me this time.

-Yes, brother,” he opted for an upright and respectful posture, “And what do I tell them if they ask?

-The truth,” he returned to his chores, “You know how I get.

His jealousy was, unlike many, too strong, it made him lose his sanity completely, and the need to bite was terrible and although now he finally had someone to bond with, he didn’t want their first time together and their bond to be forced or violent.

Nebraska didn’t notice Hades and that surprised her, the wolf tried to be near her most of the time so she could get used to his presence and by now he didn’t even bother. The second day she heard from him she approached Siran, inside the alpha’s office.

-Where can I replace Hades,” she kept her back straight even though inside she was more than nervous, she didn’t feel comfortable in his presence even if he was Sara’s husband and she was raving about him.

The wolf stopped what he was doing on the bureau and looked at her relaxed.

-He’s in seclusion, his rutting phase is here and it lasts three days plus one day for him to recover so we won’t see him for a while, we’ve even had to postpone some business,” referring to Rudoc’s sentencing but he didn’t want to go into details.

She nodded her head with sweaty palms, the word zeal and alpha in the same sentence made her panic, more than once she had felt first hand the violence it generated in them.

Gratefully he turned and left, heading down the corridor he knew by heart so he could walk without a guide.

-Ma,” he heard a soft, feminine voice behind him.

-Catalina,” she called excitedly, turning to meet her daughter, a little girl who would surely be beautiful if she could see her in detail.

-Ma, come with me, I want to show you something,” the girl with a smile grabbed Nebraska’s hand and pulled her, almost running down the hallway. The she-wolf let herself be led carefree.

By the time they had run further than stipulated and reached an area Nebraska could barely define, her hand was released by her daughter.

-Catalina?” she called out to her with a hint of distrust, something wasn’t right, her instincts told her so.

-Ma, follow me.

He defined the silhouette of the girl in the distance, waving her arm as she entered a darker corridor where the light only penetrated through the black velvet curtains.

-Come back,” asked Nebraska with a frown.

-Catch me, ma, come.

The omega pursed her lips and advanced cautiously, listening to her daughter’s voice as it trailed down the corridor. She stopped after several metres and suddenly began to tremble as an electric current ran down her spine. He swallowed dryly and turned his face sideways.

Where was he? He could no longer hear Catherine’s voice, only a soft, faint chuckle in the distance.

She was about to take another step when the sound of a door a few feet away from her slowly opened. If she was trembling before, now she couldn’t name what her body was doing. Hunching down in alertness, she took a step back to stand still again.

A wolf came out of the room and stopped, focusing its attention on her. She could even make out the gleam in its eyes and the powerful, demanding scent of a rutting alpha flooded every part of the hallway to the point of suffocation. He knew where he was.

Where Hades was secluded and now, watching her, as his next prey.
