Layan was running like mad, leaving behind the two wolves that watched his back. He was following a strange trail when he heard the howl of his beta telling him that Nebraska, the only Nebraska he knew, was with him, almost dying. His heart almost wanted to burst out of his chest.

How could she be there and in that condition? What the hell was Hades doing? If it were him, he wouldn’t let her suffer like that.

He growled as he approached the place he was told to go but there was only snow, yet the smell of it was faint. The snow was a hindrance and it was getting thicker. He paused for a moment panting, looking from side to side. He couldn’t see her, and that was upsetting him. He raised his head and howled to see if she would answer him, but nothing. He walked, smelling the ground. He could hear his heart pounding in his ears, he hoped he wasn’t too late.

There, a few yards away, he saw something, a body almost buried in the snow. He gasped and ran over. The image petrified him for a few minutes. Nebraska’s naked body was motionless, her skin very white to the point of turning blue, the b***d on her back staining the snow around her that was barely visible. His fingers were almost torn and the crimson liquid clotted, as if he had been burying something.

Layan returned to his human form and quickly began to brush the snow off of her, taking her in his arms feeling her so cold she was frightened.

-Nebraska, hey Nebraska, snap out of it,” he patted her cheek to no response.

The wolves following him finally arrived and saw the scene, their alpha at the point of collapse next to a she-wolf. They approached cautiously. Layan paid them no attention, rubbing Nebraska’s arms as he hugged her in an attempt to warm her. He sought her lips and kissed her hoping that at least his skill was actually useful, he needed it now.

Minutes later, it was only when he felt a m**n against her shoulder that he could breathe again. He touched her head and kissed her temple, relieved that she was still in this world. He looked at her torn back and frowned. Normally wounds should close after receiving his fluids directly but for some reason this one had only stopped bleeding, yet threatened to remain open.

He didn’t see his beta around either. He would get even with him later. He growled in annoyance to the point that his guards backed off, but held back as he felt the she-wolf’s body tremble again.

-Let’s go back to the pack,” he announced and carried her in his arms, if it wasn’t for the fact that she had been marked by Hades he wouldn’t let her leave his castle.

Leila watched her brother enter the mansion with someone in his arms and followed him. Being smaller than the alpha she almost had to run to keep up with his long strides. He hadn’t even noticed her presence, but from the scent and the atmosphere around him she could tell he was really upset and that wasn’t good. Layan could be irrational when he was being driven out of his mind.

-Brother,” she murmured, almost reaching for him.

-Lei, not now, I have business to attend to, I’ll call you later to help me,” despite his state he spoke calmly.

-Mylaidy,” one of the guards stopped her by the shoulder and she turned around confused, “Please don’t be alarmed, she is the queen of the silver pack, but for some reason she was found by our alpha in very bad conditions, be patient, the insurance will explain later.

-Oh, thank you,” she smiled at the guard before following him back to her room.

Leila didn’t quite understand the situation yet, but if there was one thing she knew, it was that the she-wolf was related to her. Her brother kept no secret from her, so she would just have to wait for him to go and tell her, and besides, she had never seen that look on his face before.

Nebraska no longer felt cold, yet the pain and the hollowness in her soul would not go away.

-Are you awake, beautiful,” those words brought her back to her senses and everything that had happened in the last hour that she had been conscious hit her, making her sit up quickly in bed.

A scream escaped her lips, an immense pain shot through her back and hands grabbed her arms to gently lay her back on her side. She gasped uncontrollably and trembled at her frayed nerves as her head was placed on someone’s arm.

-Don’t move like that,” Layan’s worried voice echoed in her ears again, “The wound on your back is serious, don’t make it happen again,” his hand caressed her head.

-Layan,” she managed to speak once the pain had subsided to a bearable level, “What happened, how many days has it been,” she sounded upset.

-First calm down, it’s not good for you,” the wolf touched some pressure points on her neck and on her shoulder after pulling the nightgown that covered her a little, hoping that this would take away the tension in her muscles, “Don’t worry about Hades and your son, they’re fine.

He saw her eyes light up and held her by the waist as she again made an involuntary attempt to get up.

-You’ve been unconscious for a day, Kei came back recently and told me that you gave him the antidote for the poison. Luckily, your b***d helped them because it wasn’t long before we had to look for another alpha.

He heard her sigh.

-I was the one who told him to go to Hades’ pack, it’s not his fault he left me there,” she said.

Layan growled and Nebraska lowered her head, avoiding his gaze.

-Like he almost got there when Hades only had a little time left, it was the same with you, what state do you think I found you in,” she almost shouted at him but then pulled back, clenching her fists, “Nebraska, you were freezing, you’re so young and you barely control your body temperature, you have no idea what I had to do to keep you from dying,” she said.

She pursed her lips, she knew he was right but it was her or Hades and his son, and everyone she cared about was ahead of her being, even Layan. But as if the wolf had read her mind she jerked her chin until she looked at him.

-I know you care about everyone’s safety, but have you ever sat down and asked yourself how important you are to others, to Hades, to your children, to me?

Nebraska couldn’t answer, her eyes filled with tears that ran down her eyes. To receive affection unconditionally without giving anything away, to care about someone, to be cared about, were feelings she wasn’t used to. Layan pulled her to his chest and rubbed her head as silent tears streamed down her cheeks.

-Don’t cry, beautiful, you have no reason to, we love you the same way you love us. So, from now on, I want you to think a little about your safety, because if anything happens to you again, I swear I’ll kick Hades’ a*s and lock you up here in the castle so you’ll be safe,” he kissed the crown of her head.

Nebraska smiled in his arms. In a way she felt happy after the storm. She had lost a daughter, but now she knew there were other people waiting for them, and that felt really good.

-Now precious, I know you are recovering but I need you to tell me what happened, otherwise I won’t be able to get the Council moving and from what I believe the situation is quite serious. There are even suspicions of your involvement in the plot with Rudoc, though I’m sure Hades suppressed them.

The omega broke off and nodded.

-I’ll tell you all about it, and you probably won’t believe me.
