"Then maybe it's best to just end this cleanly from the start," Mrs. Fay said, standing firmly on her daughter's side. "Go on, I'll transfer the money directly to your account. These items are too heavy for one person to carry, so I'll have a bodyguard help you out." Hearing the word "bodyguard" made Eugene feel even more bitter. She was subtly warning him that if he tried anything, there were bodyguards ready to step in and throw him out.

He gave Lydia one last look. "Then, I'll go. Lydia, take care of yourself."

"She'd better stay home as much as possible. If not..." he thought. Of course, he didn't say this out loud.

He had followed her before, and he planned to continue. When the right moment came, he would take her away by force if necessary.

Once intimate photos of them together made it online, Mr. and Mrs. Fay wouldn't have much choice but to reluctantly accept him as their son-in-law.

Society was always harder on women than men. Unless her parents truly didn't care about their daughter's reputation, even a hint of concern would force them to accept him.

As Eugene walked away, Lydia felt a nagging sense of unease, though she couldn't quite put her finger on why.

"My darling, everything's been settled. From now on, you're free to do whatever you want. Your dad and I are always here as your strongest support." Mrs. Fay encouraged her.

Lydia hugged her mom, feeling reassured but also cautious. It was better to stay a bit guarded.

The next morning, as she left for work, she slipped a can of pepper spray into her bag. It was a mix made with several kinds of hot peppers, powerful enough to make anyone tear up with just a spritz.

The entire day passed without

incident, and after work, Lydia and a

colleague planned to check out a local street market. The area hada few narrow alleyways, and as she walked past the entrance to gne, an arm suddenly reached out, pulling her inside.

She looked up, and standing before her was Eugene.

Gone was his usual polite demeanor. His eyes were wild, his hands gripping her arms tightly. "I love you so much. I'd give up everything for you, so why won't you be with me? Lydia, do you even have a heart?"

He believed that even if he tried to

warm a block of ice, he would eventually melt it. Yet Lydia and her parents never acknowledged his devotion. They were the ones who had pushed him to this point Everything he had done was out of desperation.

"Do you really love me, Eugene? You only love yourself. Everything you do is about possessing me, about replaceing yourself an ideal wife. You don't care about what's best for me!" Lydia's voice was laced with disgust. She warned him firmly, "There's a police station within a mile of here, and plenty of small vendors and customers around. If I yell, someone will come, and I don't want it to come to that." Eugene showed no fear. Instead, he laughed loudly.

He loosened his grip on her arms, stepping back a few paces, clearly confident she wouldn't escape. "Why don't you take a look outside? All those little vendors you're counting on have packed up and gone home. There's no one around."
