“Seeing you also makes me happy, Rebecca said, patting Rosalie’s head affectionately.

“Grandma, I’m sure you’re not as happy as I am.”

“You little rascal.” Rebecca chuckled, unable to contain her smile. Acting like a child, and evencompeting with me.”

“I insist on doing that,” Rosalie retorted in a childish manner.

“You’re such a child,” Rebecca sighed. “You should compete with your husband and see who lovesthe other more.”

Rosalie’s smile froze, and her heart suddenly ached. The word “love” was ironic in the context ofher and Theodore.

Theodore loved Cynthia.

However, Rosalie couldn’t confide her heartache to Rebecca. She had to keep it to herself.

Unaware of Rosalie’s inner turmoil, Rebecca continued, “Rose, I’m on your side. Let me tell you, never be too good to men. If you spoil them, they won’t cherish you. You have to give them a hardtime once in a while, so make sure Theo loves you more. You have to love him.

less.

Rosalie felt bitter inside, but Rebecca’s words amused her.

Rebecca was quite cunning.

She stood up from Rebecca’s embrace, and said, “Grandma, I understand. But in the end, he’s stillyour grandson. If you say that, he’ll feel upset.

“Let him be upset. What’s wrong with boys being upset? I can’t let

girls be upset.”

Rebecca pampered Rosalie to the core. Whatever Rosalie did or said was fine, but Rebecca wouldreplace fault with it if others did the same things.

“Oh, by the way…” Rebecca remembered something, “Where’s Theo? Why did you come aloneagain?”

Last time, it was the same. Rosalie came, but Theodore didn’t. They waited for ages for him to turnup.

“Theo has some work at the company,” Rosalie replied.

“Why does he always have work? Where does all this work come from? Wait here, I’ll call him.”

Rebecca picked up the phone, but Rosalie stopped her.

“Grandma, the company really does have something going on. Trust me, okay?”

“Of course I trust you,” Rebecca said kindly. “I just want to teach him a lesson. He always does this.He never handles things in advance.”

“Grandma, some things just happen suddenly, and it’s beyond anyone’s control. Please don’t be toohard on him. He needs more encouragement, and less criticism. Theo’s a very talented person.Sometimes, you’re too strict with him. He’s human too, and needs love.”

“Oh, you!” Rebecca almost couldn’t stop laughing. “You’re always defending your husband. I’mreally worried that you love him more than he does you.”

Rosalie’s heart clenched with pain. Of course she loved him, definitely more than he loved her. Butwhen she next spoke, there was no sign of what she truly felt in her voice.

“We both love each other.”

The more Rosalie tried to please Rebecca, the worse she felt. Everything she said was fake. Shewas afraid Rebecca wouldn’t be able to handle the truth pon replaceing it out one day.

Would Rebecca dislike her as a daughter–in–law, and want to avoid her?

“Yeah, Theo definitely loves our Rose the most.”

Rebecca, on the other hand, thought she had done the best thing in her life by bringing themtogether.

Rosalie stayed in the room with Rebecca. By eleven o’clock, Theodore

still hadn’t arrived.

To appease Rebecca, Rosalie stayed with her, reading novels together and discussing the plot.Naturally, Rebecca knew Rosalie had been helping Theodore stall for a long time.

“Rose, call him. Ask him what he’s doing, and why he hasn’t come yet.”
