Chapter 44

Without waiting for Winn or Tusker, Theo ran out of his manor. A chauffeur was standing on the porch, leaning against a jeep, ready for him to take him to Carmine’s house, but with a growl, he pulled the chauffeur out of the jeep and jumped into it. He revved the engine and zoomed out of the driveway like a breeze. Gritting his teeth, Winn too rushed behind him along with Tusker in the next available car.

Theo’s heart raced and his stomach roiled as fear squeezed him in its nasty grip. He felt like his world would crash down if he didn’t replace Carmine over there. All the way, he rebuked himself for being so immature. So what if he was her second chance mate? She was his mate and that was what mattered. Thor was his pup. His flesh and blood. Protective instincts flared and he felt so helpless that he drove faster. The rugged terrain stretched out before the vehicle, its tires kicking up clouds of dust as it tore through the dirt path with exhilarating speed. The engine roared mimicking the state. of his mind. The frame of the jeep was splattered with mud before he hit the highway.

He cursed himself for not bringing his phone because now he had this urgent need to listen to her voice. Flashes of memories of what happened between them two nights ago bounced in his head. The kind of electric sparks that passed between them made him clench his teeth hard. “Carmine!” he shouted as if she could hear him from so far. For the first time in his life, he felt that he failed. And failed badly.

Another worry added to his mind. What if Kade got the whiff that she was alone in the cottage? Carmine wouldn’t be able to take care of herself in front of him. The idea of Joseph being with her also made him queasy in stomach. Whenever Joseph looked at her, he had this desire for Carmine in his eyes. Otherwise why would a person come so far after her? Theo thumped the steering out of pure frustration. He really didn’t know which emotion he was dealing with? Was it anger or frustration or misery or helplessness? Everything seemed to war inside him, pushing him to the edge.

As he approached near her house, he picked up the familiar smells and his heart calmed down a little. However, there was one more strong smell amidst those familiar ones. It was that of male hormones mixed with dry woods scent. “F uck!” Was anyone else with her other than Joseph?

It took the entire night for Káde to reach Carmine’s house. The Gold Moon pack was not in his way because he took a bypas s that circled the Gold Moon pack thus avoiding entering the pack. The bypa ss was filled with dirt and dry leaves but that did nothing to stop him from reaching Carmine. His desire to be with her was stronger than the obstacles in the path. All he could think of was how he was going to take her again and again, of how he would make her his prisoner for life. She would have nowhere else to

go.

He was sure that she would resist him but then he had his ways. If need be, he was going to shackle her in chains. As for Thor, he would bring him to his pack and train

him to be his personal guard and a soldier for his army.

He was very near to her house when the jeep’s tire punctured. “Blo ody hell!” he growled when he saw that the rear tire had gone. Out of spite he kicked the tire and

contemplated on shifting and running to her. But that would be a mistake. How was he going to get Carmine then? She would never ride his wolf.

Grumbling, he started to change the tire as soon as he could. While he was changing it, he received his spy’s phone.

“I am going in, Alpha,” he said in a low voice.

“What? No!” Kade growled back.

“I heard the ground rumbling and I fear that one of the Gold Moon pack members’ is coming this way.”

“What the f uck!”

“I am not sure but I am getting that feeling!”

“What will you do with her? Don’t you f ucking intimidate her. She will never come with you without a struggle, Ed!”

“I understand, Alpha Kade,” Ed replied. “But I have a plan.”

Kade gritted his teeth. “If you f uck up, I am going to kill you!”

Ed let out a shaky breath. “Alpha Kade, if you want, I can wait for you.”

Kade pinched the bridge of his nose. He knew that Ed wouldn’t speak a lie and so he breathed, “Okay, go ahead.”

“Thanks Alpha,” Ed said and disconnected the call.

Ed put

the phone in his back pocket and crossed the street. The house was surrounded by a white fence. It looked lovely with many blossoms, dancing in the light wind, spilling their fragrance in the air. He heard a pup giggling inside. It looked like Joseph was talking to him while Carmine was cooking because he could clearly hear the sound. of utensils and spatulas. Aroma of roasted meat and simmering vegetables was thick in the air.

The porch was decorated with small wooden boxes with petunias blooming in them. He could easily kill the man and abduct Carmine, but he had a better plan. Ed knocked the door gently. Everyone became quiet.

After a while, the door opened and Joseph peeked out. “Yes? How can I help you?” he asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Hi, I am Ed. Alpha Theo has sent me.”

Joseph jerked his head back in surprise as Carmine came to stop a few meters behind him. She looked… pale and miserable. “Why?” she asked in a low voice.

“He isn’t well…”

“What?” she squeaked.

Thor came running to her side. “Mommy?”

Carmine stopped herself from shaking as she placed her hand on Thor’s head. “It’s fine, Thor…” she murmured. “What happened to him?” she asked Ed.

“He met with an accident…” Ed replied. He knew from Alpha Kade that she didn’t have her wolf and so it was impossible for her to smell him. He smelled very much like the Blue Moon pack wolf. As for Joseph-the human was like a flea in front of him.

Carmine’s knees became wobbly. “H-how?”

“I don’t know the details, Miss Carmine, but he was asking for you even though he wast unconscious.”

“Carmine, you don’t have to go!” Joseph countered, looking angrily at her. “He could be faking!”

“I don’t think so, Joseph,” Carmine replied, a tear rolling down her cheek. How could she stay here when Theo was so badly injured? She felt her heart dropping down to her stomach. And suddenly she realized that she loved him beyond words.

“This is not fake information,” Ed said. He took his phone out, scrolled down a few pictures and showed him one.

Carmine rushed to see the picture and she slapped her mouth to stop the scream

her throat. “Please sit down,” she said. “I will pack a little and come with

coming you!”

Ed gave himself a pat on his shoulder on the inside. “Sure, I’ll wait.”
