Claiming My Wolf
Chapter 34

~~Micah’s PoV~~

The next week goes incredibly quickly. I can’t remember ever feeling as excited about anything as I do about the secret mission that Logan, Sadie and I are working on. Finally, I’m going to prove to everyone exactly what I can do.

Logan thinks that if we try to go through his dad, my dad will replace a way to block us, and I can’t really argue with that. While Logan’s dad is including him more in the pack management day-to-day, especially now that’s about to turn 18, mine is still determined to keep his own iron grip over all the Beta’s duties.

It’s like he sees me as a threat to his power rather than his successor that he should be training. I don’t understand it at all.

But Logan argues that we don’t need their support to go ahead with our plan, and once again, I agree. The fewer people that know about it, the better. It will be more convincing that I really have gone rogue if the Alpha and his whole team are surprised by it. And Logan assures me that the Alpha will restore my link to the pack as soon as I’m finished. He says he’ll take any blame for the mission that might come down on us from the pack leadership.

He’s a good friend and I’m so glad he’s acting more like his old self. Sadie seems to have had a good influence on both of us.

The three of us have spent a lot of time together this week. During school, I’m still watching out for Sadie like before, and ever since I apologized to her, she doesn’t seem to mind me being around so much. We talk and joke around with each other, and it’s nice. She’s a bit sarcastic a lot of the time but not in a nasty way. She makes me laugh.

And then after school, we go to the pack house and make plans with Logan. I wanted to run out and get started as soon as we came up with the plan on Sunday, but he’s insisting that we make backup plans, and backup plans for the backup plans. He wants to make sure that nothing goes wrong, and I respect that. I know he still feels responsible for what happened to Kara and the Luna, and I know he would blame himself if something happened to me too. So for his sake as much as for my own, I’m taking it all very seriously. I won’t do anything reckless.

~~Micah’s PoV~~

The next week goes incredibly quickly. I can’t remember ever feeling as excited about anything as I do about the secret mission that Logan, Sadie and I are working on. Finally, I’m going to prove to everyone exactly what I can do.

“So what do you do if someone gets suspicious about why you left Westbridge?” he quizzes me on Friday. We’ve been over this every day this week, and I know that he knows I know the answer, so I decide to have a little fun with him.

“I tell them that the Alpha’s decided to turn the whole pack vegan and I couldn’t take it anymore. I just really needed a hamburger.”

Sadie laughs while Logan scowls at me. “You need to focus, Micah.”

“Oh, come on, Mr Alpha-in-training,” Sadie says, giving him a playful shove. “You know he’s got this.”

She gives me a supportive smile that makes my whole body feel lighter. Nobody’s ever looked at me like that, like they have total faith in me.

How did I go from thinking she was worthless two weeks ago to having her opinion mean more to me than anyone else’s? I don’t really get it, but it feels so good, I’m not going to question it.

“I am focused,” I tell Logan now. “I’m doing this for Sadie. I won’t mess up.”

I look back over at her to show her I mean it, and she blushes a little bit before looking down. She does that every time I try to show her that I care about her, and I don’t know what it means.

Logan relents. “I know you won’t. Sorry. It’s just important to me that this all goes well. For all of us.”

“I know.”

We nod at each other in understanding, and then Logan leans back in his chair with a sigh. “You know what, we’ve probably been doing this long enough. Why don’t we take tonight off?”

Really? Our plan is to leave first thing in the morning, so I was sure he’d want to keep going over things until the last minute. But Sadie’s right, I do have this. I know everything inside and out and I feel totally prepared. A night off sounds like a much better idea.

Especially if I get to spend it with Sadie. I’m about to open my mouth to ask her if she wants to do something, but she speaks before I get a chance.

“We should watch a movie,” she suggests, looking between me and Logan. “Something totally brainless.”

I can’t help feeling a little disappointed that she’s included Logan in this. I was kind of hoping to spend time with her alone.

But he nods in agreement, so I have no choice but to do the same. “What do you want to watch?”

“How about Twilight?” she suggests mischievously, then laughs when Logan and I both immediately cry out, “No!”

“Anything but that,” I plead.

We settle on an action film and agree to meet back here at the pack house after dinner. I walk Sadie to her aunt and uncle’s house, trying to figure out how to tell her how I’m feeling before I have to leave tomorrow. I have no idea how long I’m going to be gone for, and just in case anything does happen to me, I don’t want to miss my chance.

I’ve never been nervous with a girl like this before. But just when I think I’m ready to say something, we get to her house, and she turns to me with a smile. “Thanks, Micah. I’ll have Ava or Aaron walk me over to the pack house after we eat, so you can just meet me there. See you later!”

Then she’s gone before I even have a chance to open my mouth.
