Claiming My Wolf -
Chapter 38
~~Micah’s PoV~~
Sadie’s eyes are wide as I pull back from her. It wasn’t the best k**s ever, I have to admit. I knew after the way she’d reacted to what I said that she wasn’t really expecting it and I didn’t want to overdo it. But even so, it felt good to me. Her lips are as soft and sweet as I thought they’d be, and my whole body felt lighter as we were touching. I hope she feels the same.
“Micah, this is…” she trails off as she takes a small step back from me. “Really surprising. Two weeks ago you hated me.”
I wince. She’s right, of course, I can’t deny it. “Well, I was being stupid, like I already told you. I judged you before I got to know you. And now that I know you… I like you.”
It shouldn’t be so hard to say, but it still is. I’ve never told a girl I liked her before. I’ve told Blair, and a few of the other girls before her, that I liked certain parts of them, but never just that I liked them overall, as a person.
She’s still looking surprised, so I keep talking. “Look, you don’t need to say anything right now. I know I kind of sprung it on you, and I’m going away tomorrow anyway. I just wanted to let you know how I felt, and you can think about it while I’m gone.”
Sadie nods slowly. “Okay. I will.”
“Good.” That’s all I wanted, I try to tell myself, even though it’s a lie. Of course I wanted her to k**s me back and tell me she’d been feeling the same, but I guess it’s too soon. I’m not going to push her. “I’ll see you in the morning then. Good night, Sadie.”
“Good night, Micah.”
She gives me a small smile before going inside. I wait until I hear the door lock behind her and then I head home.
In the morning, I’m up early. I’ve already got a backpack packed with a few clothes and essentials I’ll need for my time away from the pack. It’s really impossible to say how long it’s going to take. Logan got some information from his dad’s files about a bar in the city where rogues are known to hang out. He thinks I should start there.
I’m really excited as I head out to the pack house where Sadie and Logan are waiting for me. I know it’s going to be dangerous, but that’s okay. If I can help the pack, and help to protect Sadie, I’m willing to take the risk. That’s what being a Beta is all about.
Logan smiles at me as I walk up. “You got everything?”
I nod. “I think so.”
“Well, here’s some extra cash, just in case,” he says, shoving some bills into my hand. “And I got you a couple of burner phones so you can get in touch with me if you need to.”
He hands those to me too and I shove one in my pocket and slip the other one into my bag. “Let’s get going then.”
Sadie smiles at both of us, but she’s looking a bit uncomfortable. Is it because I kissed her last night, or is it because she’s worried about me? I wish I could ask her, but it’s not really possible with Logan right there.
We all get in his car and head out over the border crossing. Logan tells the guard on duty that we’re all going out to the city for the day to visit some of Sadie’s friends, and the guy doesn’t question it. Why would he? It’s not like the Alpha’s son would lie to him.
And it’s not totally a lie. We do plan to have a little fun first. It takes a few hours to get there, so we talk about school and our classmates and the mission, and anything except what I really want to talk about, which is how Sadie feels about last night. When we get to the city, Sadie shows us a few places she used to hang out and we all get something to eat before going to a park where we can replace a quiet place where we won’t be disturbed.
“Are you ready?” Logan asks me, and I nod with determination even though I’m a little scared right now.
I’ve always been part of the pack. I don’t know what it’s going to feel like to not be.
I reach into my pocket and pull out the switchblade I’ve packed for the trip. It will come in handy for self-defense if I need it, but right now, I’ve got another use for it.
Flipping the blade open, I cut down the centre of my palm. Sadie sucks in air through her teeth at the sight of it, but the pain isn’t that bad. I turn my hand face down so the b***d drips down onto the grass.
I speak out loud, clear and strong. “I, Micah Geary, hereby renounce my link to the Westbridge Pack and its Alpha.”
Even though I warned my wolf it was coming, he still howls in anger in my head and my whole body feels numb, like a part of me has been cut off.
All three of us are silent for a minute, until Sadie speaks up. “Is that it?”
Logan and I look at each other in surprise and we both laugh. “It’s kind of a big deal,” he tells her, before looking back at me. “Try linking the pack.”
I do, and there’s nothing there. Just dead silence in my head.
“Good,” he says. “I guess you’re a rogue then.”
s**t. I really am.
This is where they leave me. Logan and I shake hands, and I turn to Sadie, not sure what I should do with her, but she surprises me by giving me a hug. Her body is warm and soft against mine, and I don’t want it to end.
“Be careful,” she whispers in my ear. “I want you coming back safe and sound, ok?”
It’s not quite a declaration of how she feels, but I’ll take it. She cares about me at least a little. She doesn’t want me to get hurt.
“I’ll do my best,” I promise, reluctantly letting her go and then I look over at Logan. “I’ll get in touch as soon as I’ve got something to share.”
Logan nods and Sadie gives a wave as I grab my bag and head out into the city to replace the other rogues.
