Claiming My Wolf -
Chapter 56
~~Sadie’s PoV~~
Selene’s question is still ringing in my head: am I ready for this?
I’m not entirely sure, but I also know that I don’t have much choice. If I can help Logan and the others by claiming my wolf now, then I have to do it.
I guess I do care about the pack too, when it comes down to it. I’m part of something bigger than myself, and there’s a responsibility that comes with that.
For the first time, I can truly see where Logan is coming from.
“I’m ready,” I tell her.
She smiles once more. “This is going to feel a bit strange,” she warns me before placing the tips of her fingers on my temples.
Light flashes in front of my eyes and I close them instinctively, but I can still see the light behind my eyelids. A strange warmth fills my body too, and then, quietly at first, but growing louder bit by bit, I hear a new sound in my head.
A new voice.
Sadie? I’m Ebony, your wolf.
I’m not sure if I’m meant to answer, so I don’t say anything, and a few seconds later she tries again.
Can you hear me?
I suppose I better reply, though it feels very weird to talk to someone that only exists in my head. I hear you.
I feel her joy inside me, almost like it’s my own, but not exactly the same. What an odd sensation. I suddenly have a few appreciation for how Ava must have felt when her wolf was sad and angry with her about the whole situation with her mate.
This is going to take some getting used to, I tell her wryly.
I know, she assures me. But we’ll figure it out together. We’re a team now, Sadie.
I open my eyes again and Selene is looking at me curiously. “How do you feel?”
“Like I’ve got a multiple personality disorder?” I say, and she laughs.
“You will get used to it, and very quickly too. Soon you’ll wonder how you ever lived without your wolf.”
I replace that a bit difficult to believe, but I suppose she has been around a lot longer than I have. Maybe she knows what she’s talking about.
“Do I have your power now then?” I ask her.
Selene nods. “I transferred it to your wolf when I called her forward. As soon as you shift for the first time, you will fully inherit it.”
Shift? I guess I was going to have to turn into a wolf, just like I’d seen everyone else do. For a brief moment, I really wish my mom was here. But I know I have to be brave now and do this for her sake too as well as everyone else’s. The man who’s responsible for her death is still out there. I can’t let him win.
“There is one other gift I want to give you before I go,” Selene says, taking hold of my hands. Her hands are cool, like the night air.
“A gift?” I repeat. “For me?”
“Ebony has told me that you have doubts about the whole mate process,” she explains with a knowing smile. “That you doubt that I can choose the right partner for you.”
It’s a bit embarrassing to have the goddess herself know that I doubted her, but I can’t deny it either. “I just think that I can make my own choice,” I try to explain.
To my surprise, she nods. “I agree with you. You have a special fire in you, Sadie. It’s kept you strong through everything you’ve been through, and you will need it to continue in the work you’re meant to do. You need a partner who recognizes and appreciates it. I believe I know who that partner should be, but if you want, I will leave the choice to you.”
I couldn’t be more surprised. “You’ll let me decide?”
Once again, she nods. “Whoever you choose, I will place the mate bond between you. If it was who I intended for you, then nothing will change. But if you choose someone else, I will change the bond and no one will ever know the difference. If you truly want the responsibility, I will give it to you, as my thanks for protecting my children here and carrying on my legacy.”
This is completely unexpected and my mind races as I try to figure out what to do.
If I choose Logan, he will feel the bond between us. He will accept me as his mate because it is what he’s meant to do.
But Micah already chose me, regardless of the bond. He wants me no matter what, and a bond between us would only strengthen that.
“Can you tell me who you already chose?” I ask tentatively, and Selene smiles.
“That might influence your choice,” she points out. “I will tell you afterwards, if you like. But first, I need you to tell me your choice, Sadie. Who do you want your mate to be?”
