Chapter 40

"You didn't have to do that," Fiona said as Elijah locked the door behind him, the sound echoing in the charged silence. She turned to face him, her gaze a turbulent mix of confusion and concern. "You just put yourself in huge trouble." Her mind raced back to the King's words, a warning ringing loudly in her ears. How could Elijah risk everything by publicly aligning with her when only two council members supported him? "You didn't have to defend me. I am perfectly capable of doing that."

Elijah remained silent, his expression unreadable as he poured himself a glass of wine, the rich liquid swirling in the glass. He took a long sip, his back turned to her as if trying to shield himself from the weight of her scrutiny.

"Elijah!" Fiona called out, her voice rising with urgency. Why was he ignoring her? Was he second-guessing his actions? "I know we made a deal-"

"It's too late now," Elijah replied suddenly.

"What?" Her heart skipped a beat, confusion deepening.

"You should be resting," he said, his tone softer now, tinged with concern. "You've been awake for more than 24 hours."

Fiona let out a snort, disbelief flashing in her eyes. "So, you're just going to ignore what I said? You aren't going to tell me why you did what you did?" The absurdity of their situation washed over her. It felt surreal, like a scene from a story where she had no control. She had no right to demand answers, no claim to his thoughts. "Sorry," she added, her voice edged with frustration. "I didn't mean to sound like a nagging wife. I'll rest now." Just as she turned to leave, Elijah's voice cut through the air, firm yet hesitant. "Wait."

"Is something the matter?" Fiona asked, her brow furrowing as she pivoted to face him. To her surprise, he was suddenly much closer, the intensity in his gaze sending a shiver down her spine. The air crackled with tension, and in that moment, everything felt poised on the brink of change.

Elijah opened his mouth to speak, but Fiona interrupted him, her voice steady. "You don't need to explain yourself, Elijah. "We're not really in a relationship. We're just... here for a deal." She felt the weight of her words, a mix of truth and deflection. For some reason, hearing herself say those words seemed to make her heart ache. "I'll do what you want, and you'll protect me. That's all it is."

As she spoke, frustration bubbled inside her. She should have known better than to ask questions about his motives. "I shouldn't have even brought it up," she muttered, shaking her head.

Elijah stepped closer, his gray eyes piercing. "Fiona-

Before he could finish, he reached out, pulling her sharply against him. Their bodies collided, heat radiating between them.

In one swift motion, he captured her lips with his, silencing her protest.

The kiss was fierce and urgent, igniting something deep within her. She felt breathless, her heart racing as desire surged through her veins. It was hot and hurried, a clash of lips that sent shockwaves coursing through her

Fiona's hands instinctively grasped his shirt, her fingers curling into the fabric as she kissed him back. The world outside faded, leaving only the two of them, suspended in a moment that crackled with intensity. She had never imagined this side of him-this raw, unfiltered connection that made her pulse quicken and her skin tingle.

As they broke apart, gasping for breath, the reality of what had just happened hung heavily in the air. Elijah's expression was a mix of surprise and something darker, more possessive.

"I wanted to wait until after the marriage," Elijah said, his voice low but urgent.

"What do you mean 'wait?" Fiona asked, confusion swirling in her mind. She thought their marriage would come after he

became king, yet uncertainty loomed over her. They had already achieved their goals-she was away from her family, her marriage void. Elijah's issues seemed to be resolved, but doubt nagged at her, especially after her conversation with the King. Would the marriage still happen? Did she even deserve him? She had been married once before while he is going to become the King.

"My wolf can't take it anymore," Elijah admitted, his gaze intense as he stepped closer.

Before she could process his words, he pulled her in for another kiss. "I want to make you mine," he mumbled in between the kisses. This time, his kisses had become harsher, driven by an urgency that made her heart race even faster. She could feel the heat radiating off him. The need that had built up between them now was so apparent she could physically feel it off her body.

As they broke apart, Elijah murmured against her lips, "You could stop me if you wanted to. I would stop."

But Fiona didn't want to stop. Instead, she snaked her arms around his neck, pulling him closer. The heat between them intensified as her pulse quickened. Her body almost immediately surrendered to the moment. In that instant, all her doub faded away. "Don't stop," she breathed, her voice barely above a whisper. It was filled with an aching desire that she didn't even know she had; the desire to be owned by him.

Elijah's eyes darkened, a mixture of relief and passion flooding his expression as he leaned in again, their lips crashing together with renewed fervor.

Unable to suppress his emotions, Elijah pinned Fiona against the wall, his body pressing against hers as he continued to kiss her fiercely. His hands roamed over her body, exploring every curve with an urgency that sent shivers down her spine. She responded with a soft gasp, a thrill of excitement coursing through her.

The heat pulsing in her stomach was almost unbearable. It felt as if her wolf had been waiting for this moment, craving the connection they were forging. In a bold move, she wrapped her legs around his hips, pulling him closer and letting herself feel the undeniable hardness pressing against her. A surge of arousal coiled in her belly.

To her surprise, however, Elijah suddenly broke the kiss, his breath ragged as he looked into her eyes. "Are you sure?" he asked, the intensity of his gaze searching for any sign of hesitation.

"I've never been more sure," Fiona replied, her voice steady despite the rapid beating of her heart. She could feel the energy between them, electric and alive. She could feel his warmth intertwined with hers.

With a low growl, Elijah kissed her again, deeper this time, as if sealing their unspoken agreement. Their bodies moved together, a fire igniting between them, consuming all doubt and hesitation.
