Crimson Red, Cerulean Blue -
Chapter 25
(Violet)
You’d think that a person who was about to be executed wouldspend their last days contemplating their life, but I’d finished that a longtime ago. Probably because the onlythings to do in this place was eat, sleep, and think about life.
I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t know how long I’d beenhere. All I knew was that I was somewhere cold, because it was freezing insidemy cell.
I’d learned that they’d recaptured Indigo, but I hadn’t seenhim or her. I didn’t know where they were. I didn’t even know if they were evenin the same place I was.
If only I weren’t soweak. If only I had a stronger power than just mind-reading.
Maybe then I’d be able to escape.
Lucas would scold me for saying that. Your mind is your greatest power, he’d always told me. Physical strength can only get you so far.
I wish that were true. I really do.
A guard walked by my cell, and I picked up a few bits ofinformation from his mind. Apparently Red and Blue had met up with Green and Orange. Brilliant. Atthis rate, I was going to be the only member of the Seven who was completelyuseless. Not that I wasn’t alreadythe only member of the Seven who was completely useless.
I can’t believe hefell for it. Lucas is typically such a smart guy.
My ears pricked up. Lucas?!
Shaking with nervous energy, I stood up and asked, “Excuseme?”
The guard turned around, an irritated look on his face. “Who– ”
The instant he made eye contact with me, I dove into hismemories of Lucas.
Fighting. Training. The sight of someone with dark hair grabbing a sword off an opponent’s back andbeating him up with it. Eating. Exchanging little, polite bits of conversationin the halls…
No, that was too far back. I had to replace the more recentmemories.
Running out, givingthe guard a painful kick in the side. Vanishing, leaving me behind. Appearingagain in Yellowton, only to replace me gone…
Lucas came back toYellowton?
He’d been looking for me. He came back for me.
My eyes filled up with tears again, against all my efforts. Thatmade my magic fade away slowly, leaving the guard blinking and confused.
“What in the world just happened?” he murmured. Seeing me onmy feet in the cell, he scowled.
“And what’re you up to, filth?”
I didn’t reply, just sat down quietly in the corner, pullingmy cloak around me. But not to hide my tears. To hide my smile.
Lucas is okay. He’sstill alive and fighting!
That was the best news I’d gotten since coming here. Becausenow, I had a chance of getting out.
A chance that was one of the most terrifying people inSpectrum.
One who happened to be mad.
