Chapter 23

Irene’s POV

Elton stood before us, his icy blue eyes were glowering down at me and were a sharp reminder of how different he was from Noah.

“I knew you were one of the desperate types,” he spat and my eyes narrowed at the obvious insult.

“How needy must you be, troublemaker..” he paused, his words hanging in the air as he took two more steps towards me.

I took two step back, subconsciously, my heart thumping from being so close to his towering and large build.

“Elton.”

Noah’s voice was low and threatening, but Elton acted like he had heard nothing.

You went around causing all of that trouble just to reel my gullible, naive brother in right?”

He scoffed. “Some damsel in princess you must be, having him running all over the place just to save your pathetic ass.”

I lost it then and without thinking, I lunged at him.

How dare him?

I have been fighting to save my ass my whole life, and I was not going to for any reason have this conceited jerk walk all over me just because he was some prince.

He was probably the prince of darkness, patrolling earth and spreading his evils around.

I pushed my leg back, making sure that when they landed on their target, they would do as much damage as I wanted.

However, I had underestimated Elton. Wait- what was this?

My eyes widened as I looked down, I was frozen midair.

Since when did I have powers? The tightening around my legs had me looking down and I was met with the most terrifying scene I had ever seen in my entire life.

My legs were held bound by whisps of shadows that swirled around them in a very scary and frightening. They had also formed black clouds beneath me and there he was, standing like exactly what I thought he was.

The Grim Reaper.

“Elton! What the hell are you doing?” Noah snarled in a growl that made me suspect that his wolf was close to the surface,

“Release her!” He barked out another command and if Elton heard him, he showed no sign.

Instead, he had his heads folded across his chest as he stared at me with a smug smile that I desperately wanted to wipe off.

1 gritted my teeth together and then tried to pull my legs away from the hold of the shadows. However, the more I moved, the more they seemed to tighten around my legs.

“You should drop the struggle, troublemaker,” Elton drawled. “The last thing you can halfway is my shadows.”

Besides, I’m just giving your Knight another chance to display his strength,” and then, with my legs still bound, he walked away.

Like, f**king walked off!

My eyes met Noah’s conflicted ones and his shoulders slumped.

“I’m sorry, Irene.”

“My brother is the only that can undo this, Alek can try, but he would have to get into his head. and…” Noah trailed off but I could already tell that it wasn’t something easy.

“I’m going to call him though, he’s the only one that can handle Elton,” Noah added in a resigned voice and I nodded, trying to not make any movement that would have these shadows tightening around me.

Noah whipped out his phone but in the very next second, there’s suddenly nothing holding my legs midair and it’s a complete fall from midair to the plush carpet that lined the palace’s grand hall.

“F***!” I cursed out as my butt slammed the floor. Noah rushed at me, his eyes filled with apology.

“I don’t know why we have to deal with his grumpy and sadist ass,” he mumbled as he helped me stand up.

“Looks like your Knight isn’t so shiny,” Elton’s lazy drawl rang out.

However, even after using my eyes to comb through the entire grand hall, I couldn’t replace him anywhere.

You can’t replace him, he’s using the shadows to hide himself,” Noah clarified and I nodded numbly.

I had heard of different kind of gift and abilities. But I had never heard of this. Nothing this strong and frightening.

And, a part of me couldn’t help the shivers that rushed through my spine as I thought of the scene from just now.

Although they were just shadows, they had gripped me so tight that it had felt like chains.

For a man like that to hold such power. Like some Grim Reaper, it made it even more scary.

Bless the moon goddess.

I refused Noah’s offer to walk me back to my room and took the long walk alone. The whole time, I couldn’t help replaying the scene in my head.

I had been held in air.

That was nothing like the battles I had fought my entire life. Elton didn’t even need to raise his hand.

The cocky bastard just stood there and watched as he made a silly display of me.

“How can you come powerless,” I scoffed at Liv as I rounded the last corner to my room.

“Maybe I don’t,” Liv returned and I rolled my eyes.

I knew Liv more than anything. While others had spent about three years with their wolf at my age, I had spent more than twelve years with Liv.

She was in my every memory and more importantly, she was the closest thing I had to family.

“Miss!” Julia’s bright and chirpy voice rang out as I pushed the door open.

“Hey,” my voice sounded dull and dead. Great. It was just the way I was feeling.

“Are you okay, you seem out of it,” Brenda chipped in from the side and I gave a gentle nod.

“I’m fine.”

“I just need some rest,” I added as an afterthought so I don’t leave them worried.

Besides, I really needed that rest if I was going to face Elton over dinner in the next two hours.

Or could I skip on it?
