Dead Man Walking: Living By Day, Dead By Night
Chapter 110: Force-Field Generation

Madison did not understand what she was seeing, as she had passed out before Zane could properly explain it to her. But her instinctive thought was to say yes, and thus her system, which was aligned with her thoughts, automatically clicked yes on her behalf, and in doing so initiated the roll.

Within a span of seconds, a list of potential skills flashed before her eyes before settling on one in particular. One that would protect herself and others from pretty much anything if she developed the skill enough.

Madison raised her brow, confused by what she was seeing. She had never played a video game before in her life, and thus had no idea what this UI was in the slightest. In fact, she genuinely believed she was seeing things, that is until a single thought flashed in her mind.

"Force-Field? What the hell is that?"

The moment she thought this, a transparent pink barrier surrounded her. It looked almost like a bubble, causing the girl to gasp in shock. Like the skill said, the effect lasted for five seconds. During which she instinctively experimented with it, poking her finger through the bubble like barrier.

It was obvious that she could poke through the barrier from the inside, but from the outside, it would take a significant amount of force for something to get through by shattering it. Or it would be obvious if Madison had picked up a book and read some fiction before. Not that she ever had.

Madison then experimented with her system a bit more, replaceing the character screen which displayed her current information.

While the average human being started with a base start of ten in all fields, there were, of course, exceptions to this. As previously established, if one was exceptional in a certain regard, they might have a +1, +2, or potentially even +3, or +4 starting off in a specific attribute or perhaps more than one.

At the same time, if one was an absolute dreg of society, like Madison was, then their stats would be lower when starting off. For example, Madison was the spoiled heiress of a wealthy billionaire. She wanted for nothing, nor had to work for anything.

Because of this, she had neglected pretty much everything. Physical fitness? What was that? She had a naturally good metabolism so she never got fat. When that was the case, why should she bother building strength or endurance? That was difficult, and if you could not tell by now, Madison didn't like doing anything in life that required some difficulty to achieve.

As for Intelligence… What did she look like, a fucking nerd? No, in fact, the only stat of Madison's which was naturally high, was Charisma, and that came down to her status in high society, and her being among the popular girls in her extremely expensive private school.

Everything else she was well below average on. And if Zane saw that, he would honestly be disappointed that she was the one who ended up surviving the awakening process. Speaking of Zane, he began to pound on the door, something which startled the girl who immediately lied back down in her bed, turned to face the wall, and covered herself with the bedsheets, pretending as if she was still asleep.

"Hey girl, you up yet? We need to talk…"

Naturally Madison did not respond. She had of course also forgotten to lock the door, because again she wasn't all that bright. Causing Zane to open the door with ease, and gaze upon her back.

Zane knew when someone was pretending to be asleep to avoid someone else, it was something he himself had done many times over the years, and thus he talked to the girl in his usual callous tone.

"I know you're awake girl, shall I fetch the shock button?"

Realizing that Zane was talking about her collar, Madison yelped as she found herself quickly getting to her feet, facing Zane with a look of fear on her face. At that moment, there was a sudden thought in her mind that she wished she didn't have.

"I didn't notice it before because of all the tears in my eyes, but this guy is kind of hot, isn't he? Wait, Maddie, what the hell are you thinking about? He killed your father!"

It was while she was thinking about this that Madison remembered before she blacked out her mother and brother were still alive, and because of this she quickly reached out and pulled onto Zane's coat, forgetting that he was her master for a moment, as she demanded an answer from him.

"Wait, my mom and brother, where are they!?!"

Zane's face was cold as always as he bluntly told the girl the truth, but not before beating some proper discipline into her. Zane immediately pulled out the button which was used to activate the girl's shock collar and pressed it without mercy.

A jolt of electricity immediately went down the girl's spine, sending her to her knees, as she pissed herself from the sensation of being electrocuted. Zane looked in disgust at the puddle on the floor, and the girl who caused it, before finally telling her the truth, but not before mocking her.

"I'm not cleaning that up…. As for your family, they didn't make it… Once you have recovered from your current state, come replace us in the mess hall. There are things we need to discuss…"

Madison broke out into tears once more, as her body slowly recovered from the painful muscle spasms that occurred as a result of the shock she had just received. She then gazed at the puddle she had just made and cried even more, realizing she had soiled herself like a helpless child.

She wanted more than anything for this nightmare to end. If only she knew it had only just begun.
