Chapter 965
1
“Just a passing comment. Arrange a suite for me. I’ll be staying here for a few days. For now, don’t let the
Raymonds know I’m here.“”
“Rest assured, your secret is safe with us.”
lan was led to the only available suite!
The man wiped the sweat from his forehead. If anyone else had heard their earlier conversation, it could have led
to a heap of trouble.
He quickly called for the housekeeper in charge and ordered him,
“Keep an eye on Mr. Raymond for these next few days. See to his needs and ensure his meals are delivered on
time.”
– “Understood.”
Entering the suite, lan sunk into the window–side armchair.
It was relatively quiet there.
He checked his phone to replace a missed call from Maja. She was probably looking for information about the
Raymonds.
He decided to turn off his phone, which was more fitting for his current under–investigation status.
He set the phone aside, propped his chin on one hand, and looked out the window with a slight smirk.
When Maja tried calling him again, she found that his phone was turned off.
Temporarily at a loss, she dialed a few other numbers, friends from previous collaborations, but they all shied away
from any discussion involving lan. With lan possibly facing charges, neither Fitch nor Tyler was willing to get involved
in that case. And the others were even less likely to participate. Finally, Maja found Phelps. Unlike Fitch and Tyler
who rejected her outright, Phelps agreed to meet with her and discuss that topic.
She immediately drove to the hospital and entered Phelps’s private office.
Fresh from surgery, Phelps was repeatedly sanitizing his hands. Seeing Maja, he gestured her to take a seat,
“Have a seat.”
Once Maja was settled, he began, “I’ve discovered that you’re not a Pennyfeather by birth. Have you ever
considered your true identity? Or have you ever investigated it?”
Maja didn’t expect Phelps to bring up her personal history. She frowned but answered truthfully.
“I looked into it in Crystalbrook Valley. But it was a long time ago and there weren’t any leads. The hospital
management was chaotic at the time. They were hiring temporary workers and even their records weren’t
complete.”
Phelps, clad in his white coat, gave Maja a once–over.
“Would you mind if I conducted a DNA test for you and others?”
“Mr. Phelps, I’m here today for lan. Honestly, I’m not interested in replaceing my biological parents,”
She dropped her gaze, her eyes slightly downcast.
For some people, the more they said they didn’t care, the more they actually did.
Maja felt uneasy about the future.
She was still unsure why she had been brought to the Penny feathers, whether it was deliberate or accidental.
If her biological parents had intentionally abandoned her, replaceing them would only inflict more pain as she wouldn’t
be able to let that fact go away from her mind.
Phelps sat across from her.
“You don’t need to worry about lan’s safety. He can take care of himself. Fitch and Tyler’s reluctance to get involved
isn’t because they’ve abandoned lan. They just want to understand what lan is up to. You just need to wait and see.
Ian isn’t the kind of man to wait for death. And the bet isn’t due for another five days, right? Who knows what could
happen before then.”
Maja pursed her lips as Phelps continued to say, “At this critical moment, you’re still worrying about him. You must
really like him, right?”
She opened her mouth to refute him, but stopped when she saw Phelps take off his white coat.
“You’re still hesitating. Or should I say, someone is making you hesitate? I hope you can understand your real
feelings soon.”
Leaving the hospital, Maja sat dazed on a bench.
After a while, she finally drove back to Rosewood Manor.
She went to her bedroom and found the hidden box.
Inside it was the letter, the ring, and a chip the size of a fingernail.
Also, the jellyfish seal she’d found in Crystalbrook Valley.
The jellyfish seal was beyond her current capacity to deal with, so she left it there.
She opened the letter, intending to read it again, but stopped herself.
When she looked at the ring, she picked it up, intending to put it on. But then lan’s face appeared in her mind.
With a frown, she set the ring down and stared blankly at the items.
Half an hour later, a new message appeared on her phone.
[Patric is here.]
Along with the message was an address.
It was in a neighboring town, a well–known land of plenty.
She’d never mentioned Patric’s name to anyone, not even to her closest friend, Carol.
Only she knew that name. The agreement she had with that man was known only to the two of them.
