We reached the city.

We walked out of the forest and in front there were many high buildings and cars were driving past. “It’s very noisy,” I said, not used to this kind of life.

Death chuckled. “It’s not that bad yet. Majority is still sleeping, and you need to really be discreet about talking with me from now on. A lot of people all around will think you are crazy talking to yourself,” he said and I nodded. He didn’t need to tell me that. I was quite good at detecting when I shouldn’t speak with him. I knew it wouldn’t be a problem for me.

The forest was right next to the train station. I found it interesting watching these people who were up at this hour, they looked tired, and rushed to be on time on their day job. In packs we are taught a lot about the outside world but it’s something else actually seeing it with your eyes. People here didn’t seem happier than people in packs. Humans in the city were not divided in packs. Most of the time they were all alone. If werewolf had a pack at least they had somewhere to be.

I sat down on a bench waiting for a train. Death was next to me and handed me a ticket. I looked to my left and there was a window with reflection clear as a mirror. I saw myself not like myself. With my now short hair and clothes that were so unfamiliar I looked like a stranger to myself. When the train finally did come I was happy to be seated in a soft chair, I fell asleep not long after the train took off. I slept most of the time since the night sleep was absent for me.

We stopped at a place which was colder than where I previously was. I followed Death to yet another forest. We walked for some time until he told me to shift and told the direction in which to run. When I noticed I entered one pack. I smelled a particular smell of a new pack. I looked around for Death and shifted back and changed to clothes he was carrying for me. It was now a dress. A little different from what I used to wear. But at least it was a dress. “if anyone asks tell them you are niece to Mrs. Redwood. They already know you are coming. They are aware that you ran away from your old pack because they abused you. They are told you are from Auras pack.” He explained as we continued to walk.

“What pack is that?” I questioned.

“It was destroyed a month ago. Alpha of that pack was very cruel. Thankfully he was stopped and the Aura pack doesn’t exist anymore. Their neighbor pack collided with Aura’s packs members and life for them has improved now greatly.”

“And who is Mrs. Redwood?” I asked.

“I had a favor I could use on her, she will help you. She is old lady who lives all alone, very trustworthy to me.”

“She can see you?” I asked and he nodded.

“This pack is okay with me staying here?” I asked but I heard someone running through the forest and soon after it stopped and three young men walked towards me. They were pack members. I could smell it. “Hello there,” one said kindly. “We are supposed to escort you to Alpha.” another with blonde hair said and smiled.

“It is my honor to meet you my lady,” said the third one and reached my hand and kissed it. “My name is David and I will do anything you please,” he said in a flirty voice. But he was only a pup.

“You know… maybe it’s good he can’t see me. Because it wouldn’t end well for him.” Death said beside me.

I looked at the boy with raised eyebrows. He looked young and if he was talking with me like this meant that he hadn’t found his mate yet. “Don’t you think I am a little old for you?” I asked him.

“Age is nothing but a number, babe,” he said trying to look intimidating but failed miserably, the guys behind him were trying to hold their laughter in.

“Maybe when you are older.” I said and the guys behind laughed at his failed attempt to seduce me.

Death let out a gasp. “What do you mean when he is older?” he faked his offended voice. “I thought you would be more discreet of your secret affairs.”

“Pretty girl needs a man by her side,” David pointed out.

“Girl does not need a man by her side, if the girl wants she can have no one by her side. And maybe if you were understanding of that,” I said, faking a baby voice. “Maybe you wouldn’t be here and trying to seduce a woman you don’t even know,” guys behind broke out laughing.

I tapped David on the shoulder. “Maybe in another life, kid.” I joked but he was now mad at me. Eventually we started walking to packs directions.

The pack looked beautiful and well taken care of. The Alphas house was very elegant and big. They told me where to go and I found myself knocking on Alphas studies door with Death beside me. “Come in” Alpha said from the other side and I entered. One man stood next to him, probably Beta. I walked up to Alpha and bowed my head. “Alpha. It’s a pleasure meeting you,” I said sweetly.

“Meredith Murrell welcome to Dark Moon’s pack,” he said excitedly. Meredith Murrell? I very vaguely looked at Death.

“Had to change your name, forgot to mention,” he explained. Meredith Murrell… I liked it. It had a nice ring to it.

“I am Alpha Julius Lightwood. “ he introduced himself like a real gentleman, he seemed like a good person. “There isn’t much I need to tell you. I am sure Mrs. Redwood will explain everything you need to know and please feel here like home, this is your pack now Meredith. And if anything is bothering please come to me,” he said and he made me smile, he was a very kind Alpha. “My Beta Christopher will show where Mrs. Redwood lives.” he said and Beta gave me a warm smile and we walked out.

The Beta was very cheery and kind.

“We are always welcoming of new pack members, we want to expand, we are happy that you are here and I promise that life here will satisfy you,” he said smiling and he was referring to my abuse that he thought he knew about. I guess if they think I have been abused before they won’t question me much just because of how hard it must have been for me to talk about.

We reached Mrs. Redwood’s house in no time, her house was bigger than I thought, bigger that my previous family home. Beta left me by her door and I knocked hesitantly, a little scared of a new meeting. Death was still beside me.

Old lady with gray hair opened the doors and clapped her hands together in surprise. “Oh Dear Death…” she called out. “You have found such beauty for you,” she exclaimed and pulled me in a tight hug. I didn’t know how to react and I awkwardly patted her back in response as she was holding me tight.

“I think that’s enough,” Death said and Mrs. Redwood let me go.

“Oh, come in so I can see you better,” she said and we both entered and then she pulled Death in a hug too, he didn’t fight it rather returned it. He held her closely, it looked sweet and warm, and it looked like Mrs. Redwood meant a lot to Death. They broke the hug off. “Meredith, you can call me Monica,” she said and started walking deeper in the house. We followed her upstairs and to one of the rooms.

“I think you will be comfortable here,” she said.

It was a huge room with a grand bed. High ceilings. It was very vintage looking. Pleasing and smelt of wood.

”I already got clothes and everything for women necessary things for you Meredith.” she said quickly, I noticed that she was talking rushing, so rushing that she needed to stop and take a breath. “My kids helped me pick out your clothes and such,” she said excitedly.

“Oh… how many kids have you got?” I asked Monica. I heard Death let out a quick laugh at my question.

“Few dozen,” she said, making me question if she understood my question. “By the years I have lost count,” she said cheerfully.

I eyed Death weirdly “When certain children were born they were brought to Monica to take care of them. Not anymore though. She’s old now.” he said. And Monica glanced at him cheekily.

“What kind of children?” I asked and this time Monica answered.

“Guardian’s” she simply said. “They are like guardian angels, but not in the sense of how you would think. Their purpose is to protect those in need, not humans but creatures with great powers. They are meant to give everything to protect their chosen creature. You see… Everyone has their guardian angel, even you Meredith, but these guardians that I foster. They come in actual human form, with healing powers.” She explained. “But I get older and I can’t do that for eternity now the foster home is ran by someone else, my children still visit me, the ones that are still alive of course.” She added.

“Do they die often?” I asked hesitantly not knowing if it was appropriate to ask.

“Of course,” she said like it was nothing to her, like cut flowers that died in a vase. “With protecting someone comes great responsibility, sometimes to protect someone you need to die, it’s natural. That’s their purpose in life,” she explained. “Anyways… I’ll let you settle in” she said and walked away closing the doors behind her.

“She is mostly out. So you will have a house to yourself.” He said.

I knew I wouldn’t be able to see Death as much as I would like. I knew what I got into.

I sat at the edge of my bed and Death sat beside me with a sigh, he put his arm around me and kissed the side of my head.

“You look worried.” I noticed how his eyes shifted and jaw clenched all through arriving.

“I am terrified.” He announced. “Of this not working out. Of you getting hurt. Terrified that I shouldn’t have gone to your house.”

“I wanted you to come.” I told him. His eyes slowly found mine. “Since you left you haven’t left my mind. Since I first met you I couldn’t stop thinking of you.”

“I thought you healed…”

I instantly interrupted him. “I healed, but not from you. I never needed to heal from you. Couldn’t if I tried. You completely sickened me to a point where it hurt to be without you. I hoped you would come every day. You didn’t. I couldn’t have blamed you… I still hoped. Dreamed of us meeting.”

He looked at me. Grazing his fingers on my cheek. “I waited a thousand years for you. And a million more will be worth it remembering that I had you.” I slowly breathed as he gently touched me. “You are so beautifully wrong for me.” he mumbled.

“I never knew why I was at a certain place or at a certain universe even. Now I am sure that this has been how it’s supposed to be all along. Perfectly wrong.”

Everything that shaped me led me down to Death.

Never would have guessed that I would wish for Death so much.
