She looked a little nervous but nodded her head yes and went to help my mom with the food.

I followed behind Neal, watching as his posture stiffed before turning into the living room and stepping by the fireplace.

"So..is everything okay?" I asked, trying to break this awkward silence.

Neal turned his head, looking at the pictures above the mantle as he let out a sigh.

"I just wanted to clear the air and thank you." He began, making my mouth fall open.

"Thank me..for what?" I asked in confusion.

"For taking care of my little girl while I was gone.." He whispered, prompting me to glance down at my hands as guilt suddenly filled me.

"Neal.....I wasn't..I didn't.." I began, feeling like a d**k for how much s**t I put Johnnie through..if anything I probably made things worse when he was gone.

"Hey, I know it wasn't perfect..Alder told me how you had your own struggles..but deep down you would've done anything for her, right?" He asked before placing his hand on my shoulder and squeezing.

"Yes..I would've done anything." I agreed..because I would've..even if I was an a*****e to her I would have gone to hell and back for that girl.

"And now..I can see you still would. I know we are all trying to figure all this stuff out..and I won't lie, it's odd seeing my teenage daughter now married and living on her own..but it's something I have to respect." He added as I nodded.

"It was my choice to stay away and now I have to live with the consequences. I lost four years with my kids..but I plan on making up for it..and I know it would mean a lot for Johnnie to see us getting along." Neal said while stepping away from me.

"But I have to say it..considering you were not only her first boyfriend but husband now too." He smiled before darting his gaze to mine and slipping his hands in his pockets.

"If you hurt her.." He dragged out as I couldn't help but scoff.

"If I hurt her Neal, I will not only let you kick my ass..but Alder..Ben..and probably my mom too." I went on, making him laugh now as he nodded once and smiled.

"That's what I thought, now let's go see if everyone else is here yet..apparently my son has some type of announcement to make." He concluded before slapping me on the back and heading towards the kitchen.

One thing I know for sure is that I will never hurt my girl again..she is my whole entire world and I will spend every day of the rest of my life making up for those four years I was a dick..so she better get used to being spoiled, because I plan on doing it until our very last breath...which will hopefully be a long long time from now..when we are gray and old sitting in our porch and looking at the life we have created all around is..sounds good to me.
