Chapter 46: She Broke Down

Steve sensed something was off. After a moment’s hesitation, he said, “Ms. Nelson, couples argue all the time. But your mom’s illness is more important. Maybe there’s just some misunderstanding between you and your husband. Talking it out might help.”

The doctor waited for Chloe’s response, but when silence persisted, he sighed and hung up the phone.

Chloe sat there for what felt like forever. Finally, she needed to know the truth.

She fired up her computer. As a hacker, breaking into the hospital’s system was a piece of cake for her.

She effortlessly found the list of patients eligible for the imported medication.

She saw Lucy’s mom’s name!!

She stared at the name until her eyes burned and the screen blurred with spots. Only then did she slam the laptop shut.

She finally understood why the hospital’s list suddenly changed. Turns out, the rich pulled some strings.

Strangely, Lucy’s mom’s name appeared before her own.

Chapter 46: She Bro

She knew Lucy couldn’t pull it off. The only one who could was Michael.

Did he really take the medicine meant for my mom just to save Lucy?

Just when she thought she had him all figured out, he always found a way to surprise her again!

A wave of intense pain surged through Chloe’s body, leaving her trembling and shivering uncontrollably.

When Candy returned, she saw Chloe sitting on the porch rocking chair.

At first, she didn’t think anything was wrong. But as she got closer, she realized the girl was trembling. Shock hit her instantly.

“Chloe!”

Chloe’s eyes stared blankly into the void, lost in thought. Her fingers dug deep into the armrests of the rocking chair, nearly drawing blood.

“Chloe, don’t scare me!” Candy said anxiously.

Chloe snapped out of it, her gaze sluggishly drifting to her face.

The moment she saw Candy, tears streamed down her face.

Candy quickly raised her hand to help wipe it off.

“What’s wrong? Is there something I can’t handle? Let me help you, don’t scare me like this!”

“My mom’s meds are out.”

Candy paused; she had heard about that drug from Chloe.

“Why’s it gone? Did she fail the check? Or did her deal with the hospital fall through?”

Chloe dropped her hand and said, “Michael took the potion.”

“Did he go nuts too?”

Candy knew her words sounded ridiculous, even to herself.

Chloe let out a bitter laugh, tears glistening like pearls as they slid from her thick lashes, landing on Candy’s hand.

“Lucy’s mom couldn’t sleep, so Michael gave her some meds.”

Candy frowned.

“Can’t her mom just take melatonin for insomnia? If that doesn’t work, try some sleeping pills. Why is she fighting you for the special meds?”

That pill can definitely cure insomnia, but just using it for that is seriously underestimating its potential.

Candy had no idea how to comfort her. All she could do was

curse Michael, calling him a heartless jerk over and over.

Michael stepped off the plane and headed back to the Paramount Airlines office, struggling to focus.

These past few days, he hadn’t reached out to Chloe, and the stubborn Chloe hadn’t called him even once.

He remembered the past three years when she’d share even the sight of a stray cat with him.

She’s never been gone this long before.

She never returned to Lotus Manor. No one left the bedroom

light on for him anymore. When he worked late in his study, there was no one bringing him milk and fruit, and no one tot remind him to rest early.

For him, this should have been a good thing, a relief.

But for some reason, he just got more and more restless.

At the Paramount Airlines engineering meeting, Michael sat distractedly, his mind wandering.

The manager called his name three times before he snapped out of it, eyes slightly dazed.

“Captain Shawn, what do you think of this plan?”

Given Michael’s position at Paramount Airlines, he really doesn’t need to attend the engineering department meetings.

But Paramount Airlines belonged to the Shawn family, and he was the heir. No one dared to mess with him.

Michael pinched the bridge of his nose and said, “Alright, we’ll do it your way.”

The meeting wrapped up, and Michael got to his feet and left.

Lucy knew something was off with him the moment he walked into the meeting room today.

As soon as he walked away, she hurried after him. “Michael, wait up!”
