Chapter 53: Can’t Let Her Go

Chloe turned her head as she listened to him, and in an instant, her face went pale.

“I’m the one who wants the divorce the most! If you really think I’m embarrassing the Shawn family, then just sign the divorce papers and let me go. That way, the Shawn family won’t be dragged down by me. Besides, if I embarrass the Shawn family, it’s nothing compared to you. You better watch your step and not get caught by Grandpa while cozying up with Lucy. When he gets mad, don’t blame me,” she said.

Michael was left speechless by her words.

But Chloe seemed to have a switch flipped. She wouldn’t stop, “Captain Shawn, you’re married yet cozy with other women. I just went out for drinks with friends, and suddenly it’s at disgrace to the Shawn family. You’re obviously targeting me on purpose.”

Michael was getting annoyed, listening to her go on and on about things that never happened between him and Lucy.

He didn’t know what came over him. He just grabbed her by the neck and kissed her talkative lips.

Chloe shivered as his slightly cool lips brushed against hers.

She froze for a moment, and when she finally snapped out of it,

she started pushing against his chest non–stop.

She couldn’t figure out what he meant.

Even while venting her frustration, Chloe could still ignite his desire.

“Am I really just that one thing to him?” she wondered.

Michael held her tight, ignoring her struggles, refusing to let go.

Chloe had no choice. In the end, she bit him.

Quickly, his lips were bitten, drawing blood. Michael winced and loosened his grip a bit.

Chloe seized the moment, shoving hard to create space between them.

She wiped her mouth fiercely, as if she’d just been bitten by some filthy beast.

The move ticked Michael off, and his brows knitted together instantly.

“You think I’m dirty?” he said.

Chloe glared at him, her anger palpable. “Of course.”

Chloe already couldn’t stand him, especially with how close he

was to Lucy.

“Chloe, don’t push it!” Michael’s voice dropped to a dangerous. whisper.

Hearing the anger in his voice, Chloe let out a chuckle.

“Seriously? You’re the one being unreasonable here, yet you’re mad at me? Is it because I asked for the divorce first? Or, Captain Shawn, could it be that you can’t let me go? Is that why. you’ve been stalling?”

Michael froze, his expression turning icy.

“You’re overthinking it,” he said.

Chloe felt completely crushed by the short response.

She knew deep down that Michael’s chances of wanting her to stay were slim. But hearing the final answer still made her tremble uncontrollably.

“Why do you keep refusing to divorce me?” she asked.

“Divorce would break Grandpa’s heart,” he said.

Chloe chuckled, unsure whether to call him filial or just plain.

crazy.

Michael took a few steps back, adjusting the cuff of his jacket.

“Until Grandpa’s stable, you’d better remember your place and not overstep,” he said.

Chloe glanced at his cufflinks; they were made of natural mica.

Those cufflinks are too stylish and refined; there’s no way he bought them himself.

His guy friends wouldn’t give him something like this. Only a woman would.

Chloe couldn’t think of anyone but Lucy who would give her something that seemed ordinary but was incredibly useful every day.

He’s wearing gifts from someone else, acting all close, while I’m here hoping he won’t leave me.

This is absolutely ridiculous!

Michael had already left the bedroom. By the time Chloe came downstairs after getting ready, he was gone.

She was absentmindedly picking at her breakfast. Just as she put down her fork, Candy’s call came through.

“Where are you?
