Rosy was reminded of the contract she asked Alice to sign. She’s been abiding by the terms really well.“She’s not as bad as the rumors say she is.”

“Told you the rumors can’t be trusted. Only fools do that.” Lawrence never trusted any rumors. He knewbarely any of them were true.

“But it’s true she wanted to marry Bruce. She even gave him her company before they got married.”Rosy heaved a sigh. “But she does know her place in the family, at least.”

Lawrence looked at her and cocked his brow. “A bit too much, I reckon.”

“Isn’t that good?” Rosy shot him a weird look. That makes things easier when it comes to the breakup.

“The fact she’s doing her part too well means she’s calm and collected. It means she has nothing shewants from us. None at all.” Lawrence paused for a moment, then he added, “And she expects nothingfrom our family or its members.”

She’s calm, collected, and won’t even be fazed even when presented with a mountain of wealth. Evenif the best man in the world were to stand in front of her, she wouldn’t fall for him if she thinks he’s nothers. She knows her place in the family. She knows her role, and she doesn’t expect anything fromEthan. Yes, she doesn’t feel any affection for him. Judging from her attitude, that won’t change anytimesoon.

“We can give her some recompense.” Rosy was feeling a little guilty too.

“She might not be interested in anything you have to give.” Lawrence looked at Ethan. Noticing thedark look on his face, he chuckled. “Someone else is interested in her, though.”

“What?” Rosy wanted to ask what he meant by that, but Ethan and Alice had come in, so she stopped.

Alice said, “Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Knight.”

Ethan stopped in his tracks and looked at Alice coldly. Mr. and Mrs. Knight? That’s how she calls myparents? Who does she think she is, the servant? I’m her husband. What does she call me, then? Oh,wait, she’s been calling me Mr. Knight all this time. So, who am I to her? An acquaintance?

Lawrence would have corrected Alice in the usual times, but seeing his son so miffed amused him, sohe simply smiled. “You’re back.”

“Is Caroline asleep?” Alice asked. Caroline was the only reason she married Ethan, after all.

“No. She was ranting a bit because she didn’t see you. I was going to heat her milk. Here, take it toher.” Rosy handed the milk to Alice.

Alice took the milk. She didn’t even look at Ethan, so she didn’t realize he was looking miffed.Lawrence looked at him, and he laughed. Alice then went to Caroline’s room and settled everything,then she went to sleep.

When she woke up the next day, she saw Ethan’s text, to her surprise. It was a short text telling herthat he was going on a business trip for two days. Alice forgot about it right away.

Two days later, she got a call from Archie. “There’s something I must tell you, Alice. Apollo went toDallians this afternoon. By himself.”

“Why did he go to Dallians?” Wait, what? “He went there alone?”

“Yes. He was at home this morning, but he wasn’t when I got back. All he left was a message saying hemust go to Dallians. He sent the servant home too.”

Alice felt her blood freeze. The boy’s only seven. Why did he go to Dallians alone? What if somethingwere to happen to him? She couldn’t imagine it if he was hurt. It would be her fault. She had been

spending most of her time with Caroline lately. The girl was still young and Alice didn’t have much timeleft with her, so she spent more time with Caroline and ended up neglecting Apollo.

She would see the boy every day, but Caroline was down with a cold today and wouldn’t leave her, soshe stayed at the residence. She did call Apollo earlier, but he sounded fine. He was staying withArchie and Alice had hired a servant to take care of him, so Alice didn’t think something like this wouldhappen.

“Don’t worry, though. I checked, and he’s coming back. He’s almost at the airport. I can’t leave my postnow, so can you pick him up?” That was why Archie called. If it weren’t because he couldn’t leave, hewouldn’t have told Alice about this.

“Right away,” Alice said. She must see the boy no matter what. Out of panic, she didn’t even put on anydisguise. In case she was followed, Alice got a cab to the airport instead of driving her car.

When she arrived at the airport, Ethan had just disembarked as well. In her panic, she didn’t see Ethan,but Ethan saw her. He stopped and looked at her as she hurried into the airport, and he narrowed hiseyes. Why is she here? And in such a hurry too. Something’s up. Let’s see what else she’s hiding fromme.

Caleb tossed the luggage into the car. He thought it was odd Ethan wasn’t moving, but he didn’t sayanything.

“Just a minute,” Ethan explained for once. He was giving the leaving Alice a conflicted look.

Caleb looked in the direction Ethan was looking. When he saw Alice, he realized why Ethan told him towait. I see, so it’s the madam. “She must be here to welcome you.” That was the reason that Calebcould come up with. That must be why she’s here.

Ethan frowned. I don’t think so. I didn’t tell her the exact time I was coming back, nor did I tell her towelcome me. All I did was tell her I would be on a business trip for two days. The only information shehas is that I’m coming back home today.
