Chapter 119

“Is this the man you’re going to marry next?” Carlos said unkindly, his eyes narrowed his eyes slightly.

The fact that there was suddenly a handsome man in Edith’s life gave Carlos a sense of peril. Worse, he seemed to be an impressive person as well.

His sense of impending peril rose. It was just like when Edward Jones had shown up five years ago.

He had one lost Natalie. Now, Carlos couldn’t bear to lose Edith too.

When Edith heard Carlos‘ comment, she instantly understood what he was trying to say.

In the beginning, Simon had said that he was letting her replace true love. Once she found it, he would no longer stand in her way. If this fortuitous misunderstanding could help her cut ties with the Lawson family, why not go along with it?

“Yes, Uncle. He’s the man I like!”

She wrapped her arms around Daniel’s and spoke boldly.

Hearing this, Carlos narrowed his eyes fiercely. His attractive eyes were surging with emotions.

Reflected in those eyes, Edith was like a tiny boat lost in an endless sea, tiny and insignificant.

Out of nowhere, Edith felt scared. She shouldn’t have said those words.

Carlos looked fearsome, but Edith also felt like his rage was a sign of weakness somehow.

Daniel was stunned for a moment when he heard Edith’s statement, but he quickly regained his calm.

He said, “I have a friend waiting for me. If there’s no more business between you and Edith, I’ll be taking her home now. Goodbye.”

Since Carlos didn’t respond, Daniel immediately took Edith’s hand and led her away.

The warmth of Daniel’s hand shocked Edith. She wanted to pull her hand out Daniel’s grip, but he was holding onto her too tightly.

In a voice that only the two of them could hear, Daniel said, “Aren’t we putting on an act? We have to make it look real, of course.”

Hearing this, Edith looked at him gratefully.

Daniel really knew her well!

The two of them left Carlos‘ line of sight and returned to their table.

Sarah’s face was pale, and it looked as though she was sick. Edith couldn’t help but worry about her.

“What’s wrong with Sarah?”

“She might not be feeling well. Let me call a cab to send you home. I’ll order something to take home as well. You haven’t eaten much of anything here.”

“Thank you for going to the trouble, Daniel. You spent so much on this too.”

“It’s fine.”

Daniel smiled gently and caressed Edith’s head affectionately.

In Edith’s eyes, Daniel had always been like this. He was warm as the sun, steady and exuding comfort.

As long as Daniel was there, Edith wasn’t scared because Daniel would make sure everything was accounted for.

After Daniel sent them home, Edith went downstairs with him.

Under the light of the street lamp, Daniel’s smile shone even brighter.

He caressed her head, an action that seemed to have become their habit.

“Did everything go alright once you came back? Is… is there anything troubling you that you want to tell me?” he asked with a smile,

Edith shook her head at this. “Although I’ve gotten into quite some trouble after coming back, they’re all matters I can handle. I don’t need to trouble you, Daniel.”

“I wanted to hear you tell me about it yourself, but you have always been stubborn. It seems that it’s impossible now. Sarah has already told me about. what happened between you, Johann, and the Lawson family. I know that you must have suffered a lot during this time, but it doesn’t matter. I’m your family. Now that I’m back, I will take good care of you and Sarah.”

“I’m your family,” Daniel had said.

These words echoed in Edith’s ears, reaching straight to her heart. It made a lump appear in her throat.

Did she still have any family?

Her uncle married her to the Lawson family for his own benefit. Meanwhile, her cousin had stolen her fiance..

Now that she had nowhere to turn to, Daniel was telling her that he was her family.

No matter how strong a woman she was, Edith’s heart softened when she heard his words.

Her tears fell so silently that she didn’t notice their presence.

Daniel’s heart ached for Edith when he saw her crying.

He used a hand to gently wipe away her tears and couldn’t help holding her in his arms.

“If you want to cry, just cry. You must have been holding so much in for the past few days.”

Once she heard his comforting words, Edith could no longer control herself. Her tears gushed down her face..

Although Carlos had once comforted her before, the feeling he gave her was completely different. Carlos was stern, while Daniel was like a cool breeze. It was easier for Edith to trust him and pour her heart out to him.

She cried so hard that she felt like she had turned back into a child.

Her heart–wrenching sobs made Daniel’s heart ache a little. Edith must have suffered too much; otherwise, she wouldn’t be so anguished.

It was unusual for them to have such intimate contact. When Daniel embraced her, he felt his heart contract. It was as though he were holding a precious

yet fragile treasure.

There was a lot that he wanted to say to her, but he was worried that he would shock her.

In the end, he swallowed the words, holding them back.

Later on, Daniel would wonder what would have happened if he’d been honest tonight. Would their futures turn out completely different?

Unfortunately, hindsight helped no one.

Edith cried like a baby in his embrace for a long time. In the end, voice hoarse, she pulled herself away.

Looking at the tears staining his expensive shirt, Edith suddenly felt a little embarrassed. “Um… your shirt…”

“It doesn’t matter. You feel much better after crying, right?” he asked sympathetically.

“Yes, thank you, Daniel. You should be exhausted on your first trip to Caurtine, but I’m still pestering you now. Go back to your hotel and have a rest.”
