Fall For “My Husband’s Uncle” By Janet Macadam -
Chapter 127
Chapter 127
As someone that had been there, the driver comforted Edith, “Miss, you’re good–looking to me. I bet there are many guys pursuing you. Why don’t keep your options open? If I were you, I would date someone better than him to make him realize that he had poor judgement.”
Edith was in low spirits. But when she heard this, she was amused.
“I guess it’s challenging to replace someone better than him in Caurtine,” she said.
“I don’t think so. If you’re really into someone, he’ll be the best to you even if he is not really the best. As the saying goes, ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!“”
Edith thought that he made a good point.
That was true. Beauty was in the eye of the beholder. As long as she were really into someone, it didn’t matter whether he was better than others or not. She wasn’t the best. How could she expect her man to be the rest?
But how could she replace a man who was worthy of her and willing to share his life with her?
She had a change of heart and asked the driver to take her to the villa. On the way, she chatted with him. When she got home, she decided not to make steak. But Carlos gave her a call and told her that he would make it home at 7 o’clock.
After thinking for a while, she put on an apron and began to make wine–glazed steak. She mixed the sauce and patted the steaks dry with paper towels.
It was the first time she had cooked for Carlos. She had never made dinner for anyone else except Johann.
Even she felt that it was amazing.
About half an hour later, the steaks were medium–cooked. She put them on the plates, and expected Carlos.
The wall clock in the living room struck seven, and there was no sign of vehicle outside.
She continued to wait patiently, but a few minutes later, Carlos still didn’t show up.
Her patience was wearing thin. She dialed Carlos‘ number, only to replace that his phone was turned off.
She felt a bit upset.
Why didn’t Carlos keep his word? He said that he would get here at 7 o’clock. Why was he late?
She waited until it was nine o’clock. Even Susan couldn’t look anymore. She gave Sam a call, but he didn’t answer it either.
Susan observed Edith who looked frustrated.
“Mr. Lawson might have something to keep him busy. You should stop waiting like this. Why don’t you eat first?” she comforted Edith.
She was right. It was not a good idea to keep waiting. What if he didn’t come?
At that time, she would get more upset.
She took a deep breath and said, “I got it.”
The steaks must taste bad after such a long time. How about I make you something else?” Susan advised.
“No, I’d like to try the food I made. Don’t bother yourself with my dinner. I got this,” she said.
She went to the kitchen and put the cold steaks into one plate. Then she cut one and began eating.
Chapter 127
The medium–cooked steak should taste good when it was hot. But it had been cooked for several hours. It was hard and old and had lost its flavor.
She was the only one in the dining room.
It was empty.
When a drop of tear fell on the white porcelain plate, she realized that her cheeks were bathed in tears.
She hurriedly wiped it off her face and felt that she was being ridiculous.
It was just a meal. Why did she overact like this? Why would she get this sentimental? Carlos was so busy giving others a lift. Why did she attach so much importance to dining with him?
However, she couldn’t control herself.
Tears rolled down her eyes.
When Carlos got home, it was over 10 o’clock in the evening. His arm was wrapped in gauze which had blood stains all over
- it.
Seeing this, Susan was taken aback. She inquired anxiously, “What happened to you, Mr. Lawson?”
“Mr. Lawson had a car accident on the way back. When he went out, he saw a kid crossing the street. He got hurt to protect the kid. We stayed in the hospital for quite a while. We just came back. Mr. Lawson might have had a bacterial infection, and his doctor suggested that he should stay there overnight for observation, but he was worried about Ms. White, Sam explained as he followed Carlos into the house.
“Why didn’t you just make a phone call? In that case, you could have saved this trip.” Susan said.
“Mr. Lawson’s phone was broken, and my phone was out of battery. Even if we could have made a call, Mr. Lawson would still have come back. Sam said.
“That’s enough. You’re too chatty. Where is Edith, Susan?” Carlos said, sounding anxious.
“Mrs. Lawson waited for you until 9 o’clock. She had the cold steaks unhappily because you didn’t get home. She is resting upstairs. I took a peek and found that she was crying sadly. Even I felt sorry for her,” Susan said with a sigh.
“She cried?” Carlos murmured with his eyes dilated in astonishment.
At the thought that he made her cry, he felt upset.
“Mr. Lawson, please go and have a look. Maybe Mrs. Lawson hasn’t gone to sleep,” Susan said.
Carlos nodded his head and turned to head up the stairs.
He knocked on the door, but no one answered it. He got the key and opened it.
The lights in the room were off. He speculated that Edith had fallen asleep.
He turned on the bedside lamp. Her face looked harmless in the dim light.
She had fine features with a palm–sized oval face, which made her adorable.
Her eyelashes were wet, and there were tear stains at the corners of her eyes. It seemed that she had just fallen asleep and she burst into tears before going to bed.
Looking at her, he went soft. He raised his hand and gently wiped her cheeks, trying to shake the tear stains from the corners of her eyes.
But to his surprise, his actions woke her.
She unconsciously grabbed his arm and happened to touch his wound. He frowned, but he didn’t let out a painful sound.
Edith who was in her dream felt that something was wrong. It seemed that someone had entered her room.
She held something viscous, and it smelled like blood.
Out of a sudden, she opened her eyes in shock and Carlos‘ handsome face came into view.
She thought that she was still in her dream. Did she miss him so much that she dreamed about him?
It took her a few seconds to make sure that she wasn’t dreaming.
Sitting up on the bed, she quickly turned on the bedside lamp. To her astonishment, she saw blood in her palm.
She noticed that blood had stained the white cloth on his arm.
Your hand…” She gaped at his wound, too shocked to utter another word.
“It’s okay. I ran into a car crash after I drove my friend home. I accidentally hurt my arm in order to save a passer–by. It’s just a scrape. It’s nothing serious,” Carlos said to her with a reassuring smile.
“So… that’s what took you so long?” she uttered, staring blankly at him.
Yes. My phone broke too. So I couldn’t tell you. I tried to come as fast as I could, but I still couldn’t make it in time. I’m a bit. hungry. Can get me something to eat?” he said.
At this point, Edith was no longer angry. The moment she saw that he was injured, all her grievances from the night vanished.
She got out of bed in a hurry without putting on her shoes. Before her feet touched the ground, he got her to sit on the bed.
He picked up the slippers and put them in front of her. He hit her on the head hard and warned, “If you don’t take care of yourself well like this, there will be more serious consequences.”
