Falling For My Playboy Boss -
Chapter 15
Collin's
POV
My mom comes in and starts yelling at me immediately. Great, this conversation is going to be so much fun for me. I can tell it already. I went to stop her real quickly to replace out what happened in the outer office. "Mom, what happened out there?" I asked her.
"Your girlfriend deliberately bumped into Catherine as she walked into the elevator. It was deliberate and she is a hateful person, Collin. I do not know what you see in that girl. She has no redeeming qualities at all. She is just using you, and I don't know why you don't try to replace a better person for you? Like that Cora out there, she is lovely, on the inside and on the outside. She totally tried to cover for you son. Why can't you replace a nice girl like that? One that likes you for you, and not for your money, or what you can do for her. Have I failed as a mother to where you don't even want to give me a grandchild? You are about to be thirty years old, honey. You need to think about settling down with a good woman. You need to have some time with her before you have children to build up the relationship before you have children. I know eventually Ava and your brother Michael will give me children, but they are younger than you and still have time. Please stop wasting your time with these women, son, they are not for you. You have a good heart inside that shield you built around it", my mom tells me.
"Mom, I just broke off with Maddie, which is probably why she walked into Catherine when she left. I know she was furious and embarrassed, and she was probably trying to get out of here as fast as she could", I told her.
"You broke it off with her, today? Was it because I was here?" my mom asked.
"No, I can assure you that you were not a factor in this". I smirked at my mom and thought about the tasty piece in my outer office. I got up and walked across to my blinds and started opening them up so I could see around the floor, and maybe get a glance or two at Cora. I stop smiling when I catch a glimpse of Cora exiting Jerry's office while still speaking with him, and his son Christian walking up to her so she would end up bumping into him. I saw her start in surprise, and then turn quickly to see who was behind her. She relaxes a little seeing it was Christian and I wonder again about how well she knows him? They seem to be about the same age, and I see that he is really interested in Cora. I am going to have to put a stop to this. She needs to be manning the desk in front of my office, not just wandering around the executive suites.
I opened the door to my office and looked around like I was looking for something, before seeing Cora speaking with Christian in front of Jerry's office. I look at Catherine, and then back at Cora before I say to Catherine "Why is Cora at Jerry's office? She needs to be working, especially for the amount that I am paying her Catherine. If memory serves, I am giving her an extra $10,000 over the regular starting salary that the job had originally, and she needs to try to start earning it. Please, make sure she isn't just getting paid to flirt with Christian", I told her, and I turned and went back into my office.
I see my mom looking at me in surprise, and then having a thoughtful look in her eyes as she looks over at Cora before she smiles at me and eases off her tirade about my life being a train wreck. Whatever the reason that she stopped, I am so thankful for it. I get tired of hearing that I need to settle down. I can do that when I turn forty. So, I have over 10 years left before I need to take anything seriously. I plan on being the head of this company longer than my father or grandfather. I want to be the one who was the most productive with the growth of the company, and I plan on making the most of it, by dating the most beautiful women in New York, before I have to make a choice and settle down and have children.
I see Cora finally come back, and I am a little frustrated at Catherine not going over immediately and making her come back to her desk. I just gave her an order, and Cora doesn't need to just be wandering around. She is my PA, and she needs to take her job seriously. She works for me, and she needs to stay with me.
As I am watching her speaking with Catherine, I see her surprised expression and then her eyes snap right up to mine. Oh, she is mad, but she doesn't have any reason to be. I am right, she works for me, so she needs to be at her desk. Waiting to greet anyone who arrives here, even though no one is scheduled to come to the office today. It didn't matter that Catherine was there, Catherine is retiring soon, and Cora needed to be up to speed in all aspects of the job, instead of just goofing off. I see her try to bite down her temper and wonder how she could possibly be mad at me. I saw her turn her back to me then and I knew she had to say something, because both my sister, Ava, and Catherine both started to smile, and then cover their mouths to keep me from seeing them start laughing. How dare she speak badly about me? I am her boss and I demand respect. I am frowning out at my outer office and decide to walk over and shut that set of blinds and I will not watch her try to make a fool of me. As they snap shut, I actually hear laughter ringing out on the other side of the glass and I get really mad, how dare they laugh at me, and turn around with a frown on my face, and then I hear my mother start laughing. How dare she take their side? She is my mother, and yes, Ava's mother, but she should take my side as I am the head of this company, and they are disrespecting me. I will not stand for this. I will make sure that Cora has the appropriate amount of respect for me as her boss.
I stomped over to the door and called out, "Ladies, this is not a fun zone, this is a place of business. We don't need to be playing around, laughing, or trying to pick people up, we need to be working" I looked directly at Cora for the to pick people up part of my statement. "We need to act professionally while at work", I finished.
Catherine and Cora are both at me with surprised looks on their faces. I saw Cora open and close her mouth to respond several times, and then shut her mouth after looking at Catherine. I was hating that she was too scared to reply back to me, and I was wondering what she was going to say when it hit me. I just told her to be professional at work when I had just had s*x, at work, again, after I told her that I wouldn't. I am a real piece of work, so I turned to go back into my office and see my sister looking like she wanted to say something to me too. I arch my eyebrows at her, challenging her to say what she wants to, but she just shakes her head at me and then looks down.
I went back into my office and shut my door. My mother is looking at me oddly and I am really frustrated right now. Why am I always putting my foot in my mouth now when I speak to Cora? I am usually so smooth, and I don't even have to try. Women come to me, and I decide who I want to date. I never have to chase them. Why is it I am suddenly so awkward with her? My mother finished what she was saying and invited me over for Sunday dinner this weekend. I accept and get up to hug her now that she is calm. She hugs me back and then steps back holding my shoulders to look me in the eye and says, "Collin, you are our firstborn child, and you are so important to both your father and me. I just want you to really start to think about your actions, and how they relate to business. Please think about what you are doing, son, and your behavior. Maddie is not a good person and I heard about what happened last week. That poor young girl out there has already met your wrath twice, and today you were ugly about them out there laughing. I don't know what is going on with you, but please hear me when I tell you that you should make better choices when it comes to the women you date. I know what you are doing, it is all over the tabloids. I just want you to pick someone who doesn't have an agenda, honey. Maddie is only with you to be seen with you and make her own career grow by being in the headlines with you. She doesn't love you, she may barely like you, but you are a means to an end for her. She is with you to raise her career on your shirttails, because if she is good enough for you, and you are successful, then others view her as better than she actually is, and she gets opportunities that she wouldn't normally get. I know you are not ready to fully settle down yet, but you need to pay more attention to the quality of people around you. Some people really do have more value than others. Like Cora, for example, she cares for Catherine and her parents. She is shouldering a lot right now, and she does it with a cheerful, positive attitude, and grace. She earned everything that she had through arduous work and studying. Now Maddie doesn't do anything for anyone else. She is a taker, a user, and a manipulator. She doesn't help anyone else out, and she doesn't care for anyone else if they can't help her get to where she wants to go. She just deliberately shoved Catherine and that was a terrible action. She has no restraint, and I guarantee you that she doesn't feel bad about what she did either. I just don't like her, I see her for who she is, and she isn't through with you by a long shot honey. Just use the same wise judgment you use for doing your work, looking for the right woman for you". Mom says to me and then leaves my office.
