Chapter Sixty-Nine Cleo's POV

Angel wanted to help organise the wedding, and I begrudgingly agreed. Though now, as the day approaches, I wish I hadn't. I had never been the type of girl that was bothered by diamonds or gold. I liked what I liked, and that was it. A lavish white wedding had never been in my dreams. I wanted the wedding, yes, but I wanted the marriage more. I wanted a husband who loved me unconditionally and a family we would share.

As the seamstress continued with her alterations, I neared wit's end. The dress wasn't me. I didn't like how it sat and was not too fond of the strapless design.

"Miss, will you please stand still? With you fidgeting, it's impossible to get the hemline right."

Oh, and I didn't like the seamstress. She was rude and snobby, and I didn't want her.

"Ouch!" feeling the point of the pinprick on my skin was the final straw.

"Well, perhaps if you did as I asked..." growling, I heated her stupid needle and pins, smirking when they burnt her and caused her to drop them on the floor. Ripping the fabric from the podium where I stood, I returned to my room.

I'd had enough. The wedding day was supposed to be about me and Roman. About the love we hold for one another, but instead, it was turning more and more into a bloody circus. Once in my room, I stood before the mirror, tracing my eyes over my dress. It was sparkly, poofy and like something Cinderella would wear.

I wasn't a princess, and although I'm a girl, I'm not girly. I'm more of a denim shorts and cowgirl boots kind of girl. Extending my claws, I tore the ghastly dress from me.

"Cleo, are you okay?" I hadn't even realised Layla was standing in the doorway.

"I'm fine."

"Yeh, I can see your not. Weddings are stressful, but nothing else matters once you're standing there with your mate in sight. And the look on his face when they see you make it all well worth it."

"I just feel like it isn't my wedding. The royal designers have chosen every aspect, and in case you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly the regal type."

"Have you told Roman how you feel?"

"No."

"I think you should."

"But Angels, his gran, and I don't want to seem ungrateful for everything. Don't get me wrong; it means the world to me that she wants to help. I just..."

"You just want something that's more you." As I nodded, she sat beside me and hugged me. "Speak to Roman, Cleo. Perhaps he feels the same." After giving in and agreeing to discuss my concerns with Roman, Layla left me to it. I wasn't sure that speaking with Roman would change anything, but as Layla said, I wouldn't know if I didn't ask.

My dream wedding would be outside, the moonlight shining on me and my groom. There's just something romantic about it, unlike other weddings held in the daytime. It would take place in a field, not a church, and fairy lights would twinkle around the archway where we would stand. It may not be every girl's fairy tale, but it was mine.

Roman had been away for the weekend. With the council members dead, Roman had created a new one. There were fears throughout the supernatural world that things would go back to how they were before, but that wouldn't happen. Not with Axel taking charge. His family came from one of the first bloodlines to exist, so it made sense for him to become the leader. Together he and Roman travelled across the country recruiting new members but only offering a place once the candidate had been thoroughly vetted.

I was woken up in the night by Scarlett's crying, but when I got to her crib, she wasn't there. Instead, she was in the arms of the man I loved. The way he looked at her melted my heart. Though I knew there would come a day when she'd want to go out with friends, I'd have to restrain her father. Thankfully, we would have a lifetime before that would happen.

"Go back to bed. I've got her." Had I not now been wide awake, he would have earned himself some brownie points.

"I'm awake. I'll go and make a bottle." Roman nodded before following me back into our bedroom, where the formula sat on the bedside.

"So I hear there's been a hiccup in wedding arrangements." Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath. "Cleo, it's our day; if you don't like something, then say so. My grandmother won't be upset. Believe me; she'd be more upset to learn afterwards that you didn't like it."

"Layla?" Though I didn't know why I asked, she was the only person I'd spoken to.

"Don't be mad. She's just worried about you." Handing Roman the bottle, I sat on the bed beside him, watching as he fed our pup. "So, what other than the dress didn't you like?"

"Honestly? All of it. I know it's traditional to be married in a church or a chapel, but it's never been for me."

"A field, at nighttime." Roman just lowered his head and chuckled.

"What?" I asked, my eyebrows raising.

"Because that's what I would prefer too. I only agreed to the church because I thought that's what all women wanted. And I'll admit that's a mistake on my part because you, Cleo, are nothing like any other woman. And before you say anything, I mean it in a good way."

"Then I guess I should tell you I don't want the formal dinner either. I'd rather have a bbq."

"Then that's what we will do. I'll speak to my grandmother in the morning."

"No, I'll speak to her."

Once Scarlett fell back asleep, Roman stood up and took her back to her crib. To think I'd been worried about discussing my fears with him when in truth, he felt the same. It made me realise that perhaps Angel wouldn't be as hurt as I thought.

With Roman lying on his back and my head on his chest, he told me about the new council. Previously it had been made up of fifty members, but to keep control, he limited it to ten. The biggest change, however, was that the headquarters would be built here at the Moonlight Pack. It made sense for Axel taking charge, and while Kai was on his soul-replaceing journey, Axel would remain at his own mate's side.

So many changes were being made going forwards, but I knew they were all for the better. However, there was no doubt that things would become more complicated once we took our places on the throne at the Royal Pack. I was scared, excited and worried all at the same time. The pack would accept Roman because of who he is, but part of me doubted I would receive the same warm welcome because of who my father was and who I used to be.
